Just thought I would throw this out there as an option for everyone. I don't want to use the factory Subaru gauge cluster, so I'll be using SpeedHut gauges. They are fully made in America and have some of the best customer service I've experienced. I've got a full set of their Revolution series gauges and I love them.
Their GPS speedometers can have turn signal indicators built right in too, so you won't lose those either. You can fully customize your gauges so they will end up looking how you want them to, you can even do custom logos. The tachometers have built in progressive shift lights as well as other warning indicators.
A full set (Speedo, Tach, Water Temp, Oil Temp, Fuel, Oil Pressure, Boost) will run you about $1000, but I think they are well worth it.

I have the Speedhut GPS speedometer also and it has the high beam indicator light as well as the turn signals light built in. I see you have a separate high beam indicator light or is that something different? And yes they have great customer service.

That is just a picture I found on Google. Just wanted to show an example. Mine also has the high beam indicator as well. :)

They are new to me but look great. It appears that you can custom order with different fonts, colors, needles, graphics, etc, etc.
5 Hz update speed on the GPS speedometer seems plenty quick. I'll have to search around to see if there's any videos of it in action.
Here's one example from their site (http://www.speedhut.com/gauge/GR4-GPS-10T/1/GPS-Speedometer-Gauge-260mph--(w--turn-signal-and-high-beam)):
Our new Revolution GPS Speedometer (with turn signals and high beam) does not require a transmission sensor to operate making installation very easy in vehicles which lack electronic sensor output or for individuals wanting the simplest speedometer hook up.
Features included
Odometer and Resettable trip
5 Htz update for fast needle response and accuracy
Display 0-60 Time and distance in feet.
Display 1/4 mile time and speed.
Show elevation
Peak Recall max speed during run
Current direction heading
Accurate GPS Clock
Current Speed in LCD
Built in Turn signals and High Beam LEDs in dial. Left and Right turn signals and high beam integrated into speedo. Speedometer has 3 wire leads exiting back of speedometer that when attached to 12volts from turn signal relay or headlight relay will turn on corresponding LED.
Hot start satellite acquisition allows GPS speedo to function within 2-3 seconds of power up
Easy hook up- requires only power, ground and lighting and GPS accurately displays speed. included 15' long antenna cord to route antenna to convenient location in corner of dash.
Speedhut Life-time warranty on all GPS speedos.

I never heard of them before. Sure is making me think I'd like to replace the gauges in my 'Cobra' with their gauges. My speedometer needle bounces around all over the place because of the bends in the cable, drives me nuts sometimes.

Even a cheap guy like me is looking. While I really prefer mechanical action on some stuff, a sensor input or GPS speedo has it's advantages. Adding the hi beam indicator is a plus, I was raised on VDO which had it.
Are they a bit pricey, yes. Do they let you get exactly the look you want, it seems to be the standard of their business. Unlike the dated look some makers prefer. Nothing wrong with SW, VDO, etc, but most of the other guys don't attempt that specific look - a gauge, ie, a meter face delivering numerical information in an analog format. Those other guys get a bit artsy with styled letters or high performance font in colors.
With Speedhut, you can get a gauge that looks like that, or, not.

Love my Speedhut gauges. Customer service is great too. I really like the GPS speedo. You can do 0-60 and 1/4 mile times too.

Here's a video of a GPS speedometer in action (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgHV3v7ZYDM). I haven't watched all the intro portion, but skipped to about 6:35 to check the movement. Looks as smooth as anything else I've seen.

I got a set for my roadster. I totally agree about their customer service. The dimmer that came with them was bad and so they sent me a new one ASAP. No questions asked.
Their ability to customize is awesome, but does come with a price. I happened to order mine on black Friday and got 25% off so they were more reasonable, 8 gauges, totally customized for around $650.
You definitely want to check them out.

Wow. I'm impressed at how impressed everyone else is! It's rare to find a product or company that gets universally glowing reviews. The only negative I recall seeing was price, but for a quality product with good support, you should expect to pay a bit more. I might have to consider these.
Question to those with them: How is your experience with the GPS been? Have there been times you couldn't get a GPS signal? What does the speedo do in that case?

What does the speedo do in that case?
The only time I haven't had a signal is in my garage, as soon as I pull out, bingo, signal.
There is an option when wiring to keep the GPS hot so it connects within seconds, before I get the car started! (I recommend doing this)
I initially didn't connect it and it takes a few more seconds to connect. Not a deal breaker, but simple to improve.

Can anyone share what these gauges are capable of when it comes to warning alarms? Can you set a warning value for each gauge? What about auxiliary warning lights or buzzers?

THe revolution have a high and low alarm that can be set on each gauge. The custom faces and logos were only $10-15 per gauge. The tach has a progressive shift light, the speedo can have high beams and turn signals and the speedo remembers the highest speed.

The hi/lo warnings lights are extra on the revolution gauges, I did buy them for all my gauges.

Was looking through their website, I see they now also offer combination GPS Speed/Fuel Level gauges. Wish they would have offered that when I ordered mine, saves a gauge slot.

The only concern I would have is the loss of a GPS signal. There is no provision if one loses a signal.

my plan is to redo the dash pod and install a quad gauge, speedo and tach.

The only time I ever lost signal was going through long tunnels and large parking garages. I would re-acquire the signal about 3-5 seconds after I exited the tunnel. Even driving through downtown Tokyo and Yokohama surrounded by skyscrapers I never lost signal.
