I couldn't find any reliant info on which would make a better rear LSD an AP suretrac or a type 2 torsen/ helical so I picked up both and plan on building up two trannys.
Here are a few pics to hold us all over until I can actually try them out.

looks like art. Maybe I can find giant diff for a cool end table to piss off the wife. Please update your findings on what works best.

Yeah man. I want a torsen diff for my WRX, I feel the torsen type is the best for the front wheels on an AWD application since they react the fastest, don't bind and always allow for the natural differential in turns even when locking.
However, I'm not sure if that will do best for the rear wheel drive application in the 818. Torsen (short for torque sensing) diff can send up to something like 80% of the torque to the gripping wheel rather than locking the slip and distributing the torque 50/50 between the wheels. It also is 100% mechanically driven requiring both wheels be on the ground with some load on them. Once both tires loose grip, even in a turn it might not distribute power evenly causing some hopping action. It seems like it would feel great right up until both tires loose grip and then you'd be off in the trees.
Anyone have experience with this in a RWD application?

sure, 94 plus Miatas have Torsens... I have two of them, they work well and are autocross favorites
Bottom line like everything there are advantages and disadvantages to each type. I think if you are building a track car I would go with a clutch type to be able to adjust its operation. (but they wear over time and require special fluid)
I also have a Miata with a viscous LSD probably the least effective but better than an open diff

I swapped a Torsen (T2) for the Ford traction loc in my Roadster and think it was a very worthwhile upgrade. For Auto X it really helped getting the power down coming out of tight turns. When getting on the power mid corner the trac loc would start to lock up and induce oversteer (push) unless you gave it more power and then in would understeer because of losing lateral grip in the rear. Neither of these scenarios are ideal for a fast time. Getting the balance just right was something that I could never get the hang of with the Trac Loc. The Torsen is very well balanced and much easier to drive at the traction limit of the rear of the car, it just puts the power down evenly and almost feels like it is helping turn the car when compared to the traction loc. Having said that though unless you are driving at the traction limit of the car I don't think you will notice the difference so unless you are planning on auto x or track days you might want to consider spending that large chunk of money elsewhere.

Well I'm reassembling the tranny tonight so I need to make up my mind on which one to try out first...

Unless you are drag racing the clear choice is the Torsen. ;)

S2000 is also torsen, rwd. Handling is superb. Easy to get the power down like others have said.

Torsen for Autox, 2 way for road racing.
