Sold the MK II, Planning the Coyote build.

Ordered the Complete MK IV Coyote kit this last weekend; will start ordering everything else next week.

Don't race, lots of around town, pleasure drives in the mountains (switchbacks), and long highway trips.

What transmission is best for me? TKO500, 600, other?

Cheers, Dale

I chose the TKO600, and plan to use the car much like you. The 600 was suggested because it will work for what I need today, and also has plenty of beef should I decide to add power in the future. That made alot of sense to me

We chose the 600 on our race car, nothing but hard miles from the time we first started the car and it still works like new.

II chose the new Keisler SS700. It is a new designed 5 speed all synchro even reverse overdrive transmission good for 7500RPM and 700bl/ft of torque. I don’t have it mounted in the car yet but it looks like the rear mount is in the same place as the TKO600 and has the center shifting position. I don’t know if the Coyote engine uses the same transmission to bellhousing bolt pattern as the 351W that I am using but Keisler has different deisgns. It took me quite a while to get mine because I order it before it was completely designed and tested but they are now in production and the last I heard were delivering about 25 per week and that is limited by the number of gears they receive from Legend Gear the company that makes the acutal gear part of the transmission. It is all made in the USA.

In this link they are saying 7000RPM shifts but after testing it was raised to 7500.

Wondering if this transmission will work (as in straight bolt-up) in the '33 Hot Rod…

Would like to use with a Roush supercharged 5.0L Coyote crate engine & 8.8" Moser rearend/3-link set-up…

EDIT - Meh, too much money for that Roush mill…!!!

I think the safe bet for a daily driver '33 Hot Rod is the Aluminator NA version of the Ford 5.0L Coyote crate engine & Tremec TKO 600 5-speed manual transmission… Definitely the CHEAPER route to take…!!!

Boil,

I don’t know about the fit but Jeff at Keisler has been able to answer all my questions.

We'd planned on going with the TKO-600. 600 is one hundred better than 500, right? After some conversations with Forte, spending some time with the Tremec gear ratio calculator, and paying attention to my normal shift points in my Boxster, we decided to go with the TKO-500. We are running the coyote and 3.31 rear end and it seemed like the 500 had a first gear more in line with what we were looking for. Both the 500 and 600 will take all of the power the stock coyote will throw at it, so strength wasn't an issue. That said, we have not driven it yet.

Boil,

I took some measurement and the SS700 is about 1/8 inch longer than a TKO and has the same 31 spline tail shaft that my FFR drive shaft fits. It only come with a 26 spline input shaft so if you have a 10 spline clutch disk it would have to be changed. They claim bell housing bolt patterns to fit all Ford, GM and Mopar engines but they don’t mention the Coyote engine by name. The SS700 also has the different shifter locations like the TKO so I would think if the bell housing does fit they should be interchangeable. One thing the SS700 rear mount is for a Chevy bolt pattern which I am fixing with a small adaptor plate.

Can a stock rebuilt T5 handle a stock Coyote?

tcoon

No the T5 is inadequate. Coyote in my coupe is making 398 RWHP, the T5 is good for about 300. We used the stock T5 in the Challenge series cars for years and everyone carried a spare tranny because they broke often...and that was with only 230 RWHP. A T5 will die quickly behind a coyote!

Hmm, I'm guessing the answer is going to be no as you guys would have done it already but, can a T5 be DIY rebuilt for $1k or less (including buying a T5 from a junkyard or something) that could handle the power?

Bill:
Curious about your experience to this point. Do you have the SS700 installed, and if so, how is the shifting? Looked like the installation was not going to be a problem based on your comments regarding answers to your questions.

Any details would be appreciated. I am at the point of almost ordering, and I had been planning on a TKO-600, but this looks like an interesting option.

TIA

Chris

Kev - If you don't mind my asking where did you order your TKO from, and what are you planning on for the clutch?

I ordered my TKO 600-rr from summit racing along with a center force clutch. So far holding up well to the racing abuse. T5 would definitely not cut it, need a T5z just to handle 300 hp, and the coyote makes 400 in our application.

I bought the engine and transmission from Ford Racing Parts Direct in Atascadero, California. I know the owner - father son business. Good guys. Since I live in California it worked out good as they have free shipping on the transmission so paying the tax (which you eventually have to pay anyway) is pretty much the same as shipping for other vendors. I replaced the flywheel with the billet steel one from Ford Racing as well as the matching 11" dual friction clutch from Ford Racing as well. The clutch is made by Centerforce. I know that Forte is shipping a clutch that doesn't require a flywheel change but I figured this would be easier to replace down the road with widely available off the shelf parts vs a one off non-standard combo. Cost a few hundred extra bucks but shipping coast to coast takes a chunk out if the savings anyway.

If you want part numbers let me know.

Kevin

Chris,

My progress is very slow because of medical issues but the only issue I have found so far is the rear mount on the trans is for a GM mount and not the Ford one that came with the kit. I made a small adaptor plate to adapt the GM mount to the frame. The drive shaft and the Quicktime bellhousing both fit and the shift handle looks like it is in the correct spot. It does look like the shift handle will need to be shortened up a bit. The trans feels very good shifting dry while sitting on the bench at least. It was filled with oil for testing at the factory and then drained for shipping so there is still some oil left in it but not much. I am afraid it will be awhile before I will be driving but will check in when I do.
