New Mexico requires at least one working wiper for title. What is available for the hot rod?

This is a good question as Jesper is working on a design that we can use for all the vehicles (excluding the GTM which uses a corvette variant design) that is better than the original (and none too good) Lucas cable-drive system we use on the Coupe and C-car Mk4. We dont have anything although Speedway and Yogis and Hot Rod places have systems. This is a common question and we are working on it along with a slew of engineering items.

I'm in a similar situation here in NJ. Wipers are mandatory for the title inspection. Even in states that have adopted the SEMA model legislation will need them, if the particular state has an inspection for obtaining title. The SEMA model makes reference to the NSRA safety inspection check list. On that list, it clearly states that wipers are necessary and they must be either electric or vacuum driven, which precludes the use of a clamp on manual wiper.

I looked at various setups. The search criteria was; a simplistic system, compact under the dash as I have the HVAC system.

What I ended up with was a couple of "Might Wiper" motors. They fit under the dash, room to spare on the driver's side, just barely clears on the passenger side. They will comply with the inspection requirement. That is all that I care about. I know that the two motors will not stay syncronized and I'm not overly concerned as to how well they will wipe water from the windshield. ( I have driven my FFR Roadster in extreme downpours with no top and no wipers ) In all likely hood I will remove the arms and install some nice caps on the wiper shafts.

I have done a lot of research on wipers for my '52 Ford F-1. I started with a cable system from "Specialty Power Windows" lots of work and pure crap! You might consider, VW Bug, "Newport" or "Raingear". I used Raingear on my '52 and that system could work on a roadster. Newport has a couple of systems that could work with the hardtop.

I was thinking of using a single wiper on the drivers side. I will have to check the state code to be sure if this is OK.

I have developed a system using the SPW kit and I am very happy with it's design and operation. The Key to the system is not to have tight bends in any of the cables, I made sure to have no bends more than 30 degrees and it is very quite and will last forever. It is a very simple system with very few moving parts. Feel free to pm me with any questions.

I'm using a single that will be top mounted. The cowl mounted units probably work much better but mine just needs to be good for the NSRA inspection. They also look more "correct" when top mounted.

Once you simulate channeling, a 5 inch chop, and shed all the fenders you don't really have a claim to what looks "correct". You just have to make yourself happy.

If you might want the most basic wiper and your state will except it ( AZ does) this might fill the bill.

Thanks for the post Jim. I think that works here in AL too. The chance of me needing a wiper is pretty remote. I'm putting a single electric unit in the coupe top. I only need to power it because the switch will be on the wiper.

If the NSRA 23 is your goal then the wiper needs to be vacuum or electric to qualify. I'm going to use what Jim did on the roadster windshield.

Tons of SUVs and hatchbacks have compact, self-contained wiper units for the rear window. Some mount through the sheetmetal above or below the window. Some mount through the window. Maybe it's possible to find one that fits the requirements of the '33?

I was thinking the same thing, in fact Speedway was having a closeout of a generic SUV rear window wiper that made me think of it.
