Received some pictures from Bruce Chervanek on the progress of the changes being made to my MK4 conversion to an accurate 289FIA

The frame has been modified to use original style fiberglass footboxes, faux front transverse leaf spring tower, and relocated motor mounts (moved 4" forward)

The footboxes before installation

Installed in the modified frame along with the a reproduction of the battery tray in the correct location

View of the faux transverse leaf spring tower that replaces the FFR "X" member with the fake transverse leaf spring in place and new upper coil spring perches

The round tubes replace the square tubes that run from the cockpit to the front. They tie into the transverse leaf spring tower and also are used to support the footboxes

Next up pouring the body. Stay tuned!!

I should also add that the round tubes that go under the FFR footboxes have been removed and replaced with "outriggers" and extensions like originals. Wait till you see the trunk!!

why are the upper arms mounted on the other side of the frame mount?

Just temporary to align mounting plate for welding

I built a welding jig for the local hot rod fabricator to modify my front lower control arms with rod ends.

Brought him the necessary materials

http://myimages.bravenet.com/154/145/692/3/lower_IFS_arms_002.jpg

And this how they look now

This is how FFR should make them from the get-go

I just noticed looking at my modified frame pic above that my new front lower control arms likely won't fit. That sucks big time. I'll double check when the frame gets here. If not, guess ill have to sell them. Really bummed now

Why wouldn't they? Are you concerned that they won't clear the outer uprights for the leaf spring towers?

Yes. I'm hoping they will articulate upwards without hitting the steel upright support. I have a lot of money invested in them and would hate to have to trash them.

Maybe you could move the crossbar on the arms or replace it. It does look like it will hit.

How long will those joints last without any type of grease? That area gets grimey, doesnt it?

2FAST4U
05-03-2013, 09:13 AM
The joints are replaceable. Removing the cross brace is an option but unsure if that will weaken them structurally.

Wow... just wow. John O is going to have some competition for nicest 289 FFR (street versus FIA, though).

Bill, Depending on how much they travel you want, it looks to me like they will work as is. Do the hiem joints screw out? Screwing them out some will give a little more clearance.

Yes they are adjustable. I talked to Bruce earlier. He said to ship him one and he would check. He seems to think as you do that there shouldn't be a problem.

Well, that would suck if they don't fit. But if they will fit a Mk 3 i'm interested. Let's talk.

Wow, look at those carbs and intake manifold. I see they are double pumpers but I am curious how the ports in the manifold work. They almost look like straight runners and one barrel per cylinder but that wouldn't work at less than full throttle.

It looks to me like it's too close to call without measurements or installing them on the frame and testing. But, even if they don't clear, wouldn't end links with longer threads solve the problem? Or would they be too weak?

You could also notch out those upright supports.

I sent one arm to Bruce. He is going to check for me. And yes, they can be adjusted to provide additional clearance

Hi Frank. Hopefully by mid August

That's just 3 or 4 weeks from now. Bruce must be farther along than it looks in the most recent photos. Can't wait to see it in person, you going to have a "it's here" type get together when it arrives? We have all seen new MK4's delivered but yours is by far the most unique so far. Should be really cool!

The hardtop is built by Bruce Chervanek. He is the one modifying my chassis and providing the 289 FIA body. Are you interested in a top? Send me a PM

Received my pin drive wheels and gold anodized spinners from Bob Lacey at Vintage Wheels. True works of art!!

I preferred the S/C style wheel over the FIA style. Just personal preference. Next up, Goodyear Billboard tires!
