We have a similar thread on the "other forum" like this, but noticed we are not doing it here. See if we can get lift off!
I ordered my seats yesterday. Figured these will work and will go good with my theme.

Updated my PCV setup based on a few recent threads. Also installed a new battery with a few more cold cranking amps due to slow starts when the fan is running.
Oh, and we put about 55 miles on it today, too. Gonna wash it tomorrow and go for another cruise.

Completed the driver's side footbox plastic lining panels. They look like embossed leather and come from E Z Boy Interior Products and are ABS 1/8" thick plastic board. 2 sheets 32" x 44" at $29.95 each, minimum 2 sheet order. You can put them in a sheet metal brake , heat them with a heat gun and they bend very easy and neat. Very easy to install with SS screws and finish washers. Can weld them together to create larger pieces and can upholster them if you wish. I've made door panels out of them and think I might do the side of the trunk with them. Still waiting in line for final body finish sanding and paint so I'm doing lots of odds and ends. The weather hasn't been cooperating here either for moving the body (like 35 1/2" snowstorm recently and again 2 days later with another 8"). makes me think I'm in Alaska!!!

John - I like those seats, and agree it will be a great match to your theme!
Bill - Any pictures of the plastic things for your footbox?
I did some misc. stuff. I am sort of in a lazy mood. Not sure if it is weather or stress at work - or what. Anyway, I decided to do something different and painted and assembled the e-brake handle.... started to figure out where the A/C unit will fit, and worked on the IRS lower control arm, using advice from the forum. . .

Howdy,
Nothing! I guess that's because a don't a Coupe but I do have a Spyder. The Spyder Forum is DEAD so I'll post here.
Sunday I made a cover for my trans tunnel.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd248/stengun/1362963886_zpsbc3409c3.jpg
And today I removed it.
Sorry, no pics. I painted the underside of my tunnel covers ( Hey! I want them to look nice incase I run over someone! ).
I have to secure my fuel lines and power cables before I seal the trans tunnel, which I worked on today.
I'm getting thinks done one day at a time.

Not much work this weekend - but my IRS brake adapter plates finally arrived. I did a "dry-fit" of the parts and decided it should work. I am concerned about the fastener access now that The Factory changed the Allen button head bolts to "normal" hex-head bolts. I prepped and painted the brackets and will hard-assemble them in the next build session.

This week I took the body off for the final time, welded up 2 small side bumpers as required by the trans dept., removed the trunk rear panel to make light install easier, levelled out the driveshaft angle into specs, replaced all my nylon locknuts with stover locknuts (required by law here) , aligned the front end, trimmed the body openings, finished my light pigtails at each corner, fixed my ebrake length issue (cables are 1.25" too short) with a longer clevis, and began installing my heat shileding on the footboxes. Paint soon!

Now I'm working on the new dip stick.
Also noticed that one of the axle seals in my rear end is leaking:(. After all that now it needs to come apart again. Note to all: if you have a donor rear end, don't cheap out like me and do it all right away!

It also appears there's break fluid coming through the brake booster in to the foot box. What could casue that?

I had the same problem only on the exterior of the footbox. It drove me crazy unti one day I noticed the remote reservoir rubber hose feed lines to the cylinders were loose on the fittings. Put some small hose clamps on all and problem resolved. Might check there first.

Thank you. I should take a look at those. I bought some of these Klixon circuit breakers - they are rated at 10A, but these will drive relays (or MOSFETs) so the rating don't much matter. These are used in aircraft and other military applications. But I am not sure how long they will last if used as an on/off switch.

Yes. I just shaved a very small amount off the corners. I suppose a file would have worked, and probably safer. Be careful, though - only a tiny amount needs to be taken off. Then I made a cut from the corner and went on a diagonal to the center hole - see picture below. Then slipped the cable inside, then smashed the plastic square thing into the hole.

Hi Chris -
Yes. I am planning on making the "roof" of that section remove-able. I measured QSL's new kit and will slice that section off. Then make an inverted V shape cover. I was thinking of hinging that piece, but then figured that I would likely end up removing the entire section anyway if I had to work inside there.
Interesting note on the newest crop of kits -- the Factory has pre-cut an access hole on that section - but I don't recall if it is on the outside or the inside of the box.

I didn't realize how much work is needed to fit these panels into place. I must say, however, that these panels in the Gen 2 kit (red body, round tube chassis) seem to fit better than the black body versions. It is still a crazy patchwork quilt!
I had a real tough time fitting the floors into place - even with twisting and bending, putting the floor down meant scratching the heck out of the side panels. So I cut them into 2 or 3 pieces. I hope this will be OK.
Nothing is siliconed and riveted yet, I am dry-fitting first.
QUESTION: Does the passenger foot box "float" above the chassis tubes? I have almost 2 inches of space between the front chassis tube and the bottom of the passenger foot box - should I add some aluminum spacers or something in there to fasten the bottoms of the foot boxes to the chassis?
As always, more details are posted on my WordPress site, http://wayneyoshida-kh6wz.com/

I decided to practice running the brake lines today. I used some scrap number 12 wire, cut into five-foot lengths. The copper wire is much more flexible than the brake lines, but at least I can do a mock-up before I bend the real thing. Masking tape indicates where those clips would go.
For reference, I am ditching the manual and using the “FFR Type 65 Coupe build site,” by cbergquist1 on Flickr.com – click here to see Chris’ section on brake lines (http://www.flickr.com/photos/51103049@N00/sets/72157622122325431/)

I just noticed the line running along the outside of the driver's side square tube. That may get in the way of the front lower wheel well aluminum and the steel pontoon brace piece that attaches to that same square tube. I ran mine on the inside but under it would work well too I guess.
The holes on the outside of the tube on the left are where the wheel well aluminum attaches to.

The third picture is on the passenger side but you can see where the aluminum and pontoon piece attach...same on the driver's side....unless you are doing something very different of course...

A cross ram setup on a sbf is pretty tough to get right because of the front distributor, and the cylinder spacing and offset does not leave alot to work with as far as space is concerned, the packaging is pretty tight especially with the limited room our cars have to deal with. It's been a fun challange so far :D. It's nearly complete now just have the trumpets and filter box's left. After that is going to go out for polishing and plate. I have not decided to anodize or to just clear coat the polished aluminum yet. I keep changing my mind. I guess I will decide that after I see what the polishing looks like.

Mounted the KIRKEY Low backs today. Used Speedway sliders with homemade side mount brackets. In my case the left front passenger mount fit in the same hole that is used by the rear hand brake bracket bolt. With the seat turned slightly to the outside it fit great. I had to fabricate a mounting bracket for the left rear seat bracket hole. Right front bolt went in the seat mounting pan, left rear went in the 2x2 square tube behind the seat mounting pan. I could leave the hand brake in the original position and have full travel.

Hi John. Just a quick thought. I see in the second photo that you have installed the rear splash guards (rear cockpit pieces on the sides). When you mount the body they will get partially covered up. I did the same thing but ended up pulling them off and mounting them over body. I think it gives a more finished look. Before and after photos....

Sat morning was a body reinstallation party at the body shop. Paint and undercoating was finished Friday afternoon. Even was able to coat the inner body at the exhaust area with a thick coat of Lizard Skin! Monday will be a half day off from work to get the body secured at the various mounting points, the front clip rubber cowl bumpers installed, hinges adjusted and trailer the beast home for final assembly. I see this faint ray of light at the end of the tunnel!!!
John: I did exactly what you did with the rear splash gaurds and the body went on fine. I will be making the last two plastic panels for this area that butt up against the body for the finished look as you saw on the footboxes when you last visited. I think mounting the body this way looks just fine if you add interior panels.

Filled the seams on the front end today. After cleaning the seams and removing the wet Gel Coat I used NAPA Fibre Strand 6371 for the first coat. I used medium pressure and made sure the filler stayed only in the groove. The stuff is hard to sand. Three minutes of sanding with 80 grit and a second coat of 6371 was applied, still only in the groove. A few more minutes of sanding and a coat of Rage applied with a wider applicator. Fourth coat was also Rage with a different color hardener to help me "read" the lows. Finally, the Icing on the cake. Total process took about four hours. Tomorrow I'll sand the Icing, touch up any flaws and it will be ready for two wet coats of Grey Primer-Filler and one wet coat of Black Primer-Filler.

Spent all weekend preping the engine bay and playing with my bell housing and clutch setup
I had to machine custom offset dowels to get the bell housing to indicate better than .005 and the .007 Lakewood dowels didn't get it done plus the .014 dowels where to much, I had to machine them @ .010 to get it within .001 it took all day Saturday monking with it but at least it's right. :)
So Sunday I started setting up the clutch linkage mounted the bell and clutch fork and I go to the hardware Bag for the pivot ball nada not there never was, wish quick time said it didn't come with it (both summit and quicktimes descripton said it did) cause trying to find one that would work took all day grrrr. Ended up buying a stock one at mustangs unlimited and I tried to shorten it but could not get it short enough grrr. This morning I started over and machined one from a 1.25 long grade 8 flange bolt worked like a charm.
I spent the rest of the day bolting down the tranny and Headers, then droping her in the bay. It was a little tricky with the headers on but she did go after I looseed the motor mounts up and got them to wiggle around a bit. The FMS Z head 3/4 primary shorty's fit really nice with about 1/4 to spare on driver side footbox. All in all she went together rough but it fits optimally and that is what I like tough install but worth the extra pita. It would not have been so bad if quick time sent the pivot ball with the bell housing and they made dowels with closer offsets, .007 between sizes is just to much to get it right. .0035x2 is .007 T.I.R. just to much for my comfort zone.
I'll add pics later can't get this stupid phone to add them right now.
The pics came out a little dark the lights in my garage could use an upgrade.

QSL,
Im planing on making some sort of heat shield under the mufflers and covering it with heat reflecting material and the fuel tank is a stealth sumped tank from Glens Performace so it has an external pump and pickup in the front of the tank, it has no line's coming out of the top, the return is still in the hump but is still a good distance away from the muffler. As far as the outlet goes I was thinking I would make a removable aluminum oval plate for the rear of the car and maybe have some louvers cut in the space between the tip's kinda like the GT-40. Or maybe just 2 round disk's, not sure yet. Btw your dash looks killer makes me want to do something similar but i dont have the metal skills, have been thinking about retrofiting a dash from a 66 mustang, parts are cheap and easy to get and its a 60's style vintage look like the one you guys built, probably would be something Mr ####by whould have done if they ever made a street version.
I like the GT40 idea. Also the dash idea. I had actually thought of doing something similar. I think it could look really killer. Worth a shot.
Finished the body cutouts, installed the headlight buckets and turn signals, installed the side windows and cut a wedge out of the bottom of the bonnet and glassed it back in place.

I used 8 2x4s and a couple of boards from the old buck. I need to add a set of wheels on the tail end so I can move it around easier. Maybe a couple of "X" braces too.

Did some more sheet metal work. Here's a question - On the outer rear wall, is the panel supposed to smash tight against the small square tubing? I have a considerable amount of space between the back of the aluminum piece and that tube. Looks like this, I can stick my fingers inside so it must be about an inch or so of air.
Here's a picture:

Not to worry, mine is the same. You've got enough support at the bottom where it rivts to the rear floorboard lip, at the sides where it rivets to the rear bhd and the side sill and at the top where it rivets to the cross bar. You're all set. Some guys will cover this later with a splash panel that hides the open sill chamber.

Hi Wayne
This was a tough area to get a perfect fit. I also have a slight gap between the back aluminum and the vertical frame. I can't tell where you picture was taken from. There have also been posts describing different ways to place the aluminum in terms of what pieces go first...ie. small lip on the inside or outside of cockpit. In the end I think it is personal preference and depends on the finish you are looking for and whether you will be covering with carpet or not.

Hi Wayne
I think I know where you are taking about now and yes I also have a gap there but just along the back half of the 1" tube. i was able to get rivets into the tube in the front half. The edges of those panels are all riveted in place so I'm not worried. I know others have made new panels for that spot but I got mine to fit nicely.

Anyone running an MSD Atomic EFI system? I am. I have not found much info on this and that forum, so I will post stuff as I make my way thru it. Anyway, the Atomic system comes with fuel pump and filters, these are 3/8-inch. But the Complete Kit tank and fittings are 5/16. . . so I got some adapters from Summit.
Anyway - today I started to mock up where to mount the external fuel pump and how to run the lines. Didn't get too far, I need to figure out what and how to do this. Here are some pictures of my fuel pump mounting plate.
Other than making sure nothing will hit or crunch the filters, pump and lines - are there any other precautions or hints that I should be aware of? The flex fuel line will run along the passenger side chassis rail, like most builders have been doing. The second filter will mount near the passenger seat area, but have not decided on the final location.

In the garage: Started making a new bracket for the external fuel pump (again), decided to run a return fuel line system, will be installing that this weekend. Planning on where the access panels will go in the trunk area.
Coupe builders with IRS - Mark VIII / Ford Racing pumpkin and FFMetal battery box:
How do you fill/drain the rear end? I noticed at my last work session the battery box blocks the fill and drain plugs in the rear. Not too big of a deal, but this means the rivets will have to be replaced with screws/nuts or - removable pins or something.
I am thinking of adding a threaded rod or something on one end of the battery box, creating a hinge point, then I can remove some screws on the opposite side and tilt the battery box up to access the pumpkin fill and drain holes.
This is not a great picture showing what I mean - but take a look anyway:

Even at a meet that draws a number or Ferraris, Aston Martins, Jaguars, Maseratis, Vipers, various Cobra roadster replicas, a Lotus, and one McLaren; the only Daytona Coupe draws a crowd! The most unusual vehicle was a 1959 Volkswagen pickup. The three sides of the bed fold down to form a flat bed truck. I wonder if the VW's load rating would allow it to serve as a car transporter for the Daytona? That would be a comical combination.

Question:
Does something cover this area, or do I need to fabricate a new piece? Both sides are the same. This is the driver side at the rear of where the door would go:

Trial fit the door sill pieces. They have to be installed after the body so don't drill the holes yet. You'll be able to see what kind of overlap there is between the sill piece and the piece you are asking about.

Timb,
I have no experience with the red bodied coupes, just my grey body roadster and coupe. When I did my seams, they had to be ground out and leveled with filler. I ground down the seams as well but my thought was I should wetsand/scuff the whole body before applying the filler to promote a better bond. I am deep in rage gold and sanding right now

Finally a break in the weather between two storms. Thirty degrees outside and with my little heater made it do-able to not freeze my tongue to the frame.
Worked on my wiring, and so far my horns are working. I have the Russ Thompson turn stalk so it complicates things a little. Getting close though to finishing that up. I ended up wiring the horn to the stalk button, and the plan is to use a foot switch for the brights. Keeping my fingers crossed for more mild winter days!

How do these vents work facing downward? Does the air coming through the radiator catch on the vents and is forced through them? Seems as though the air would take the easiest route straight up the chute.
jkrueger
03-25-2014, 05:53 PM
Yes, that is the intended effect. I want air that is coming through the radiator to be forced into the engine compartment then for that air to go out the side vents or under the car.

Hey JC,
I thought the whole point of the air channel from the nose opening, through the radiator and out the hood was to take the hot air and expel it. By adding the louvers in that area, I would think you would pull the hot air just exspelled from the radiator and soak it back into the engine. I would think that pulling air from under the nose or through the hood before the radiator discharge would be the best method.
Just my thoughts...
jkrueger
03-26-2014, 09:18 PM
The air coming through the radiator though hot, has to be cooler that what is under the hood. It is not any different than an OEM car with air coming through the radiator and into the engine compartment. I just want to get some air moving by the engine to help cool the engine compartment. I have wire loom melting that is 8-12" from the exhaust pipes. We will see how it works the next time on the track.

I made some brackets out of 1/8-in. aluminum plate: A fuel pump mount, and 2 "bulkhead" plates that mount to the triangular mounts for the IRS upper arms. These will be used to route/fasten the fuel lines (supply and return) and the e-brake cable on the passenger side. An identical bracket (mirror image) on the driver side will hold the other e-brake cable and the rear wiring harness.
Looks like this:

Another view:

Mounted the fuse panel under the dash. Has anyone noticed how flimsy this panel is? I didn't like the flexing, so I added a small bracket to screw into, like this - see the little silver bracket in there?
27467
How about that e-brake? My cables are about 4 inches too short! I ordered a kit from North Race Cars....

Hi Jeff. It is a Martin Senour paint with clearcoat. Color is Sterling Gray Metallic #56-82209-A.
This is the same color that I will put on the body. The stripe color is still undecided but I have a Phoenix Yellow BMW M3 that I will sell when the car is finished and I may paint the stripe the M3 color in its honor.

CUSTOM 66 MUSTANG DASH
Did not do all this today more like slow over the winter.
Any way I fitted a 66 mustang dash assembly and fabed a console extension to
Replace the ffr switch panel.
The steering column was way off center at first so I sectioned the center and lengthened it 1.5in to get it-
Symmetric to the center of the car and line up close with the column then I trimmed the ends to fit close to
Where the doors will meet, ill extend the ends after I drop the body on and fit up the doors.
The console extension was fabricated with 1/2 square tube and 1/2 round tube to create a smooth edge, some
1/8x1 steel strips and sheet stock. The 1/8x1 will be used to mount my switch panel and a 7in android tablet.
I then pulled the dash out and made a clay plug for a 3 gauge cluster to cover over the mustang radio hole.
Waxed the front with carnuba wax and glassed a mold for the gauge area. After the resin cured I marked the edges of the mold and drilled 6 1/8 holes for rivets to clamp the mold onto the dash. After removing the mold i cut thru the dash leaving about an inch around the mold edge. I then waxed the mold and riveted it back onto the dash. I flipped the dash over and mixed up some spotting putty and used it like a thin surface coat on the mold from the back, after that setup I backed that up with glass and resin.
Here are a few pics of my results so far, it's just tacked up right now but will be fully welded in later.
The biggest challenge was making enough space for the vintage air setup and getting the steering column to line up even close.

My Coupe was entered in class 34 - CSX4000 and later Cobras and Cobra Tribute cars. I took first place in class!!!!.....oh yeah, there were only three cars in the class...the other two were very nice FFR roadsters.

My best guess is that you start with a new nose piece available from Factory Five at $2500 and you prep and paint. I'm happy that the car sustained no known damage to the radiator or frame and that the fiberglass held together sufficiently well that I was able to travel the 47 miles from impact location to garage. I'm still waiting for an insurance adjuster to make an appearance at my home. I'll let you folks know what I learn. The Texas Cobra Club guys here in Austin have been supportive with recommendations for shops that provide quality paint and body services. Wish me luck!

Its fairly inexpensive and flows almost 1900cfm.

I did this cause I wanted to add a shroud to the FFR fan cause the temp was slowly rising when sitting still.
It was about 85deg outside without the A/C on.
Before I ordered the shroud from breeze that Fluge modified and used I thought I would look for something from summit and just got super lucky.
I hope it helps others I'll repost if it develops any issues.
Finished mounting all the exterior parts prior to paint. This has definitely been the most trying part of the build. Just when you think you are done you find another pinhole in the gelcoat.

Took my side pipes off to install the body mount screws. One of those jobs that look quick and easy. 2 hours later they are in. Now those would be helpfull cut outs to come from the factory.
Figured the approximate area to drill, then drilled with a small drill size to locate the mount hole. Then drilled out the actual size when I saw which way to drill.
Hardest one is the drivers side most forward one as the footbox aluminum is right against the mounting tab. Had to bend out the tab to get the clamp nut on there. Then tapped it back in place with a punch.
I modified the dash bracing to allow for the gauges to be raised. Now that I'm using the marine wipers I need to modify the modification in order to make room on the drivers side.

I too will have to heavily modify the hood on the passenger side it's high about 3/8-1/2 in the cowl area the pontoon hits the hood way early seems like that is common with the gen2 body although I'm not entirely sure it's just the body I think the frame is slightly off where the body sits in the passenger door sill. I wish ff would scan the driver side and make a true mirror image body with a cnc machined body plug. It would make the body fit so much better but from what I hear the gen2
