View Full Version : Hardtop idea.
Factory five could produce a hardtop for the 818 kinda like the one on pontiac solstice.

I found some larger images of those 2 options:

As well as an additional one:

Personally, I like the look of the last one the best. :)

Who makes the last one and where did you find this?

Gotcha. The company is called Smoothline (http://www.smoothline.com/). Maybe they'll make one if FFR gets delayed in making theirs...

it would be way cheaper than having a functional convertible top put in

I like the short one. Retains the overall styling of the rear humps, and looks a little Carrera GT ish. Just with the side panels would extend longer, while keeping the glass where it is.

I would extend the rollcage and throw one of those on if they made it. I like Coupe race cars better/safer. BUT- Do the 818R doors even open? lol

R doors do not open. There is a beefy side crash bar there that, if the door opened, would have to be stepped over anyways.

Yea- so for an R it makes no sense.

Someone should make a fastback look.

Ditto, that one gets my vote. I'd buy one as soon as available.

On the "other" forum someone developed a hardtop for the mk3 it is very simular to the short model, with gull wing t-top. It's called the tangent t-top.

I've sent them an inquiry asking how many they need to sell in order to make them. :-D

I think it does, I would use a top and the windshield for the R, especially in Calif because of the sun is too intense at times.
I like the protection of the side bars and IF the doors can open, you climb over the bars easier.
My roadster is my second open top car and even though we have sunshine most of the time, it is often too frigging hot to run around getting your head roasted.
I enjoy open top at night much more than during the day

This is why I'd like to have two top options... a hardtop like the Tangent or the Solstice (with windows) and a bikini soft-top like on the Boxster Spyder, just to keep the sun off:

There has been a lot of ideas put up here on this subject since the 818 project started. Everything from coupe, targa/coupe, soft tops, quick hard tops like the ones people are talking about in this thread. Where it is going, nobody really knows. Dave Smith has said he would like to have some kind of soft top or some along the lines of a quick top for the current version of the 818.
Only time will tell.

Dave Smith has pretty much promised that an optional, extra cost soft top (the manufacture of which has been commissioned to an aftermarket vendor) will be available for the 818 at production launch. Here's hoping. Other possibilities may happen further down the road.........

There was a car someone built that I saw in I think was Hot Rod magazine, that had a dash, windshield, roof assembly which all tilted foward for ingress. I thought it was a different and unique and definitely "out of the box" thinking..

That concept was actually in production on a British Micro-car featured on an episode of 'Wheeler Dealers'

I like the car, looks like my speed, like the roof idea to. You got my light bulb turned on , hmmm that would be easy to make and easy to put on and take off. Two engines, wow I would not even no where to begin trying to make that work right. It is a bad machine, I love it

I think a hardtop like the 33 kit would be good. That way you can switch from roadster to coupe if you want to.

If its a mr2 spyder windshield frame. Wouldn't it be easiest to modify a hardtop for one of them. Does the windshield sit at the same angle on both cars?

It's confirmed to be an MR2 windshield, but I believe the frame is unique to the 818.
