Broken Tone Wheel...Remove them all?

Started on replacing a rear wheel bearing and found the tone ring has a missing segment.

With no ABS intended for the 818S (I believe) I'm not going to replace it (~$80) or leave the broken one in place to screw up wheel balance. So while I'm busy with brakes etc I intend removing all the tone wheels.

Am I missing something?

Any comments?

Mr. Dremel to the rescue.

A missing segment on the tone ring will likely not be significant. It's a minor amount of weight much closer to the center of rotation. Compared to 2-3 oz of a wheel weight to balance a tire assembly at 8-10" from the center of rotation. The imbalance will be in grains of weight, not much to be concerned about.

Cutting it off may be more problematic, some do, it's not much of a difference in rotational inertia, either. But, if the build is to be "every last item," go for it.

Running the ABS reluctor rings would seem pointless.

I took my rings off and scrapped them. I'm going to make a plate with an o-ring boss to fit where the sensor was to keep things clean inside.

(incidentally, "tirod" I should have been clearer...it is not just a tooth missing but a whole segment of the wheel between two bolts)

For safety, I thought everyone would keep the ABS. Is there a good reason to remove the ABS?

with practice you can stop faster w/o abs
I never experience it unless its random ice in the winter and this is a summer vehicle only

Same here, covering it, no abs in my 818

The abs in my wrx stopped working due to a severed wire. Learned to dive it that way after a while. You just have to train yourself to not hitthe brakes harder if you start to slide but to let up some.

perhaps it's also due to age and experience... I've been autocrossing for about 20 years, always disable the abs and most of my driving has been done w/o ABS. I hate FWD and 99% of my driving has been with RWD vehicles. I've practiced agressive driving w/o ABS and with practice you develop improved skills.

I am younger and I hate abs unless on snow, I disable it on all my fun cars, I too hate fwd. My experience is with awd and rwd, but some with fwd.

Is there any allow/disallow rules for ABS in the type of racing the 818 might do?
Do the guys in the corvettes turn off traction control and ABS when they race?
I am going to leave mine in and just add a switch to disable it. I gotta have it for panic stops on wet or icy streets. The brake pedal cannot control wheels individually like ABS.

While I'm not 100% sure, I don't see any technical reason that the ABS cannot be retained. It's basically a stand-alone system in all of the donor years. It will add a bit of complexity to running the brake lines and modifying the harness, but it will have zero effect on the 818 build mechanically.

On removing the tone wheels.....Check to make sure they are not used for secondary functions such as a seal mating surface or a wheel bearing stop.

Rears bolt to the hub and have no secondary function i know of. I think the fronts are integrated onto the axle, but need to look it up to confirm.

To retain ABS the front outside CV joint will need to be "butchered" to keep the tone wheel. I believe I read in some thread that the use of a "standard" big bolt would be a way to secure the front hubs to the bearing/knuckle. Maybe it will be a good idea to cut the bulk of the CV off and use the original splined shaft end/oil seal running surface/nut as the hub retainer. That would also keep the tone wheel for those who want to retain stock ABS.
