I'm going to do a lot of drilling of all my aluminium panels shortly. I was going to send them and chassis out to powder coating.

Going through a few other boxes the other day, I noticed that I had a lot of stuff that had surface rust. e.g. hinges, sway bars etc.

Is there anything that I shouldn't powder coat?

I would powder coat an metal part that is not coated or plated already This includes but is no limited to:
Hood hinges (all parts)
Trunk hinges (4 pieces)
door hinges
Door latch spacers
3rd leg roll bar mount (passenger)
Spindle adapters
quick jacks
3link parts
Traction loc brackets
exhaust hangers
fan mounts

Im sure theres a bunch more that I have missed.

Be sure to put a bolt into any threaded fitting before powder coat. Otherwise you will have a lot of work to clean it out before you can thread in whatever goes there. I powder coated the lower control arms on my Hot Rod and learned this the hard way.

^^^ That's genius.

I wouldn't have done that! Thanks for the top

Eek! I have all of those parts (somewhere). It might take me a few weeks to find them though. Thanks for the list Mike. It looks like a good starting point.

Martin,

Not trying to derail your thread but I had a related question that I hope someone has thought about. When you are powdercoating is it helpful to champher the edges of the item like the quick jack bumpers? Does it affect the longevity of the work? Of course, if you have it done by a vendor, that would probably be included in the price of the work similar to chromers. Just curious. Those quick jacks ar sharp! WEK.

WEK - don't worry, I don't get upset by derailed threads and I doubt your question would anyway.

In my case, we got the full set of bumpers for half price at an open house that I attended. So far, I haven't discovered anything sharp.

I'm going to go around and file off any weld splatter and erroneous bits before I send anything out for powder coating anyway. I'll probably even file off any weld that will prevent the panels from sitting flush as well.

All 90* edges need to be eased over. The door hinges, hood mounts, etc. all have a sharp edge from being cut, if it isnt slightly rounded over, the powder coating will easily chip off.

Hey WEK...deep six those shin busters and get some over riders. Help stimulate the economy. LOL

I had my "elephant ears" coated with a rubberized bed coating from Line-X. They shot the fronts and backs for 20$ (actually, just the front of the front ears). It looks good too, especially from the back of the car. It also deadens the pinging of little stones from the road.
