I have a couple questions that my fellow )soon to be) builders in Maryland may be able to answer. After 2-3 years, I'm ready to order an Mk4 kit.(I'm very excited.) But I have two questions about Maryland requirements and inspections.
1) Does Maryland require Catalytic converters or can I go with straight headers? (I would prefer the headers.)
2) Are windshield wipers required or just recommended? (I don't plan to drive this on rainy days.)
I want to make sure I order the kit with what Maryland requires. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi Nasali,
You can go with straight headers. Yes they do require windsheild wipers. A fellow builder in MD mounted a temporary marine type wiper (clip-on) that was accepted.
What area in Baltimore?

PJ,
Thanks for the reponse. Very helpful.
I'm in the Reistertown/Cockeysville area. Freeland is not far. I'm guessing you're about 25-30 minutes north of me.
If all goes well I'm looking forward to place the order soon with a pick up date towards the end of March.

Hey Nasali, how that body buck doing? Glad to see your getting close. To answer the wiper question, my inpector was told by his trooper he only needed to inspect for what would have been on the car when it was built, IE the windows must roll up and down, since no windows the requirement is N/A, same with back up lights. When you get close talk to your insector of choice. I was also told by the inspector at MVA that they were drafting COMAR language to change the requirements to treat kits as historics and elminate alot of the red tape. Maybe by the time your ready that will happen. VEIP waivers are the easiest part so no problem with cats.
Anyway, you can always order the wiper kit later.

Denny,
Getting ready to put the buck together. Thanks for passing it along. I've spent the past couple months getting the garage ready. My son and I can't wait for the spring to get started.
I recall you were getting ready for an MD inspection back in the fall. I hope that went well without any hiccups.
Thanks for the info.

Hi Nasali,
You a very close - grew have lived in both areas. Let me know what I can do to help you. I have almost all of the specialized tools you will need for the project. Even all of the body tools and spray guns. Lots of spare parts - even leather seats.
My car is in the paint shop now. My friend built an early MKIV and has been on the road for about 8 months now.
It is a great project! Did you get the base kit or complete kit? My friend did the base and a donor and I did a non-donor build - so plenty of experience heree fro you!

Except I still have PJ's 250# torque wrench
PJ's a great help - in fact, every MD builder has been a big help.

My experience with the wipers is different. My car did not come with them (second owner) and the car passed inspection, twice. As for the emissions please pm me and I will provide you the name and the phone number of the gentleman at the VEIP to get a lifetime waiver on your emissions.

PJ,
I'm getting a complete kit. I never had the patience for tear downs. I envy those that do have the patience.
Thanks for the offer to lean on you. As much as my son are looking forward to this, I know I'm going to need some help and pointers. I went to the build school, but I have seriously messed with cars since high school and college days.

Everyone,
Thanks for the help and tips. I've talked to a number of FFR builders across the country. Everyone has offered assistance and willing to share their builds and experience. This is an additional reason I felt the FFR was the best fit for me. Thanks

Hey Nasali, great to hear your getting started soon. I live in Bowleys Quarters, Maryland and have a MarkIII Complete kit for sale. If interested. I started building and assembled the steering, suspension and put wheels and tires on. Mainly because I was moving. She's a rolling chassis. All the rest of the parts are still in Factory Five Boxes. Let me know if you are interested. Maybe save you some money. I have to sell due to family issues. I hate to part with my dream but just trying to find a good home for her.

Hi Nasali,
Great - your experience will be of great help to you. In high school - I always a a peice junk that I was trying to hot Rod or build - but never got anything to a workable stage - too ADD - but of course we didn't know about that back then. So my build was really the 1st 38 years that I tried something like that. as far as I know it worked out great - not hard at all - I relied heavily on the forum for almost all of the electrical stuff and became friends to two local builders MVRight and Rick.
So just let us know what you need and I am there - if you want to hook up let me know.
