While I wait to pick up my kit I have been looking over the manual and build posts. I want to make or buy a aluminum engine turned dash plate to mount my gauges. Would it hurt to open up a oval shaped hole in the dash for the plate so that the entire gauge pack could be removed from the front of the dash. I would use some nice plated hardware to attach. I don't want to make the dash too flimsy though. Has anyone done or seen this? Do you think it is doable? Thanks. T.W.

Sorry for the spelling error.

Yes, you can cut a decent size opening in the dash. There are a couple of things to be aware of though. The dash isn't flat and you need to know where the master cylinders are as they will influence where the gauges can go.

Here are a few pictures of what I did.

The big hole is really helpful to have later on in assembly. To bolt the dash panel to the body I installed 1/4-20 nut serts and used 1/4-20 bolts to fix the panel to the body.

I used a billit aluminum piece that I bought from a hot rod part place and curved it to fit the dash.
