Wow, sounds to me like you both have poor attitudes.
How about:
"Hey guys, been away from the computer for a while, any updates on the 818?"
"Well, the people that put a deposit down got a tentative schedule, but we haven't heard much about the developemt progress."

Patience my friend. Even those of us with deposits and production dates haven't heard any groundbreaking details in our updates. Mostly continued R&D testing and production setup. It's all work that has to be done but nothing real sexy.

They said in the last update email that the next update will include some exciting in-car video and track testing data!!

Wow, WAAAAAAAAAY over moderated.
It was a reply as simple as the question in itself.
Which I've just noted you gave suggestions for both but only edited mine, had the question been phrased as per your suggestion you would have found my initial response to have been much along the lines as your suggested response in the first place.
My response was appropriate to the question.

Best not to tell the mods how to do their job. Its like a ref in a sports game. They make the calls and arguing only gets you sidelined.

If your response was directed at me, I'm not a Mod and so obviously I didn't delete your post.
At SEMA Dave said that they were looking at a summer release/shipment. There is also some information that an 818 will be at the Huntington Beach Show at the end of April. Other than that information, I don't know anything further.
I'd rather have the car delayed a bit than released early with a ton of problems (you know, like Microsoft does.)

Then an apology for you is in order.

Only among the people that haven't plunked down their money, Arrowhead - which is interesting, to say the least.
I wonder if they know it will be AT LEAST a 1 year wait if they ordered one today?

I'd put it close to 1.5 years..... Don't think everyone knows the sheer impact that the 818 has already made. Once this kit actually goes into production and people actually see it on the road and learn of its "final" price, I imagine that it'll sell much better than the roadster!

Guys,
I know that the people with deposits are on a e-mail update list (since I have to send out the e-mails). I also know that the team is planning on giving folks an update at the Moochfest. More than that, I also know that the project is on target and there haven't been any delays or problems that I know of.
From everything I hear and see, the 818 project is being managed professionally and I think the team understand the importance of a clean and successful launch.

Most of us are patiently waiting for more news... There is an old saying that is pretty appropriate here: "patience is a virtue that is easily lost". :)

Ive been away from the forum for a while. I'll try and grab mad dog and the boys and throw up an update later today for you guys. Things are going very well and I dont have any bad news, only good. The real challenge is the battle to fully complete and test everything before shipping as there is a ton of pressure to ship but we all know how important this design is, so we are going slower than alot of people would want. more in a bit.

Whoa....stranger danger. Some noob named Dave Smith apparently has plans to throw up later. Does anybody know this guy? Maybe he could use a hand with some theraflu? ;)
Waiting anxiously. :)
Sweet, I can't wait for the update.

My only problem is the $12000 that I have burning a hole in my pocket... :-) Great to hear that everything is going according to the project plan... I actually miss working big long term engineering projects!
A great update would be a coupe version or a hardtop

Proof that the OP wasn't off-base with the post folks.
I'm glad to see some moderation going on with the 818 forums. Can't wait to hear the update, Dave.
BTW Mods: at one point we discussed having a dedicated locked thread reserved only for Dave Smith/FFR personnel updates in light of all the thread hi-jacking going on. I agree with the OP, we haven't heard much lately but then again, it's hard to dig through every possible post to see where the updates are.
In any case, happy 2013 guys! I'm looking forward to an awesome year of FFR news.

Agreed, that's what I would love to hear. It won't happen though, it's most likely going to be "we're working our butts off to get the placed orders fulfilled - more to come"

Mmm...somewhat. If you're on the pre-order list then you would have received an email 10 days ago today with minor updates. So to say we haven't heard anything in a while, when Dave has only promised to give updates to those on the pre-order list isn't quite true. It's just that others posted the first two letters, and I didn't see the third letter posted anywhere.
Project 818 Pre-Order Update #3
January 14, 2013 Update
Project 818 is moving along on target and the team is making excellent progress. We've made some major investments to accelerate the project and hopefully reduce production ramp-up time now that we've officially sold 170 deposits.
The biggest news is that we've added engineers Colby Whipple and Dan Muldoon to the 818 team. Colby is a master tool maker, engineer, and fabricator and he is currently working on all 818 production tooling. Dan Muldoon is a mechanical engineer and brings some excellent composites knowledge to the team. Good news also is that engineering intern Frank Kardok has elected to stay on through the spring semester and product launch.
We've also purchased, installed, and begun using our new AKS/Hypertherm laser-cutting machine. This $450,000 equipment investment is making sure that R&D engineering changes get brought more rapidly to production. We are now cutting all 818 steel and aluminum in-house with rapid turn-over time. This will help keep our target production costs in line so that we can deliver the 818 at the promised price of $9,990.
At the end January, we will be heading to the track for durability testing and final chassis release. The next update will include some exciting in-car video and track testing data.
Thanks for your support and if you have any questions, please forward them via e-mail to info@factoryfive.com.
Thanks again!

I consider Dave's comment on the new laser cutter MAJOR. FFR is making a nearly $1/2M capital investment to accelerate the 818 development cycle and reduce BOM costs (of course this equipment will benefit the rest of the product line as well).
Of course it's not as exciting to us as the promised track testing video in the next update, but it reassures me they're pulling out all the stops to keep the 818 on schedule and budget without sacrificing quality. That's big, and I appreciate it. Congrats on the new equipment!
A coupe update would be sweet!!!

I feel like we should have a sticky thread to address why exactly FFR isn't launching with a coupe version or changing the design. (both are pretty much due to cost of production I understand).
Or we could just encourage everyone to move to California
They don't have to change the design to put on a hardtop

They don't, those were two separate things that a lot of people have been asking about.
These are things that FFR reps have repeatedly said are in consideration but not due for the launch. Right now it just seems they are focusing on polishing the engineering and getting the product out the doors.

I was in CA for business last week. Rained Thurs, Friday, Sat morning, and Sunday. ;)
(plus, if I lived in CA, I'd be poor and have a small house. Doesn't stop me from wanting to live there.)
