View Full Version : Electric Fuel Pump Location?

I am looking for advise on the best location for Electric Fuel Pump on Mk4 Roadster. Whitby Motors has been assisting me with my build and I believe the location they have suggested is depicted in the pictures provided.

Hopefully this had not already been addressed. I tried to search the forum first.

Essentially, I believe they are recommending placement in the rear PS wheel, on the vertical angled rectangular tube attached to the main 4 inch round tube. I believe it is best if the pump is located below the gas tank. I am running a carb system with 7 psi electric pump, self regulated, no return line needed.

Thoughts?
Also can any one tell me how to make the pics actual thumbnail images instead of links?

Thinking back to my MGs etc in the 60-70s that looks like close to where they put theirs.

Here are pics of the electric external fuel pump and filter arrangement I went with. Whitby Motors here in Greensboro helped me sort out the details.

Here are pics of the brackets for the Fuel Filter. I made them out of Al bar stock. The circular clamps holding the filter are made by Russell and are available from Summit.

Additional Information about the Fuel Pump: The Holley HP pump is ultra quiet. I rotated it 180 degrees so that the outflow port would line up with the passenger side 4 inch tube.

That looks good. Above road debris and at or below the bottom of the fuel tank

I am mounting my fuel pump in the same location. Actually it is the same pump. Where did you find your fittings coming out of the fuel pump?

I bought the fittings at a local hardware distributor, The Monarch Group, LTD. Their number is 336-996-7618. They may be willing to ship. I would try McMaster-Carr on the web as well. I suspect McMaster-Carr has the fittings. There is a good chance you can find the fittings locally.

The fitting should be a male 3/8NPT, 90 degree elbow with 45 degree inverted flare fitting.

Note that the pump is rotated in clamp that comes with the pump so that the "OUT" is along the outside of passenger main frame tube.

By the way the pump, according to Whitby, is an excellent choice. They put it on all their '33 Hotrod builds. They ran it for me and it is whisper quiet. It has power to spare for the roadster requirements; therefore, it will not be overtaxed and will last.

If you need a close up pic of the fitting let me know and I will post one.

I mounted mine in the same location. It's a good location :D

I wouldn't call the HP Billet pumps quiet, lol, but they're very dependable.

I think it's easier to run the fuel lines through the transmission tunnel (keeps them away from the headers) but that's personal preference.

Btw, I wouldn't use those fittings - that isn't a full flow 90* bend - buy some aeroquip npt/an fittings instead. Do like a 3/8'' NPT to -8 (or -6) fitting into the pump, then a 90* (or whatever angle works best for you) full flow fitting

This is how you want your 90/45/120/etc.. bends to be like to not impact flow when it comes to oil, fuel, etc...:

Hey thanks for the support, I am just getting into the fuel now and need to figure out the right way to go. One way that I was thinking of is running braided hose for the run from the pump to the fuel filter (Which will be in the front)? Or should I stick with the hard lines provided?

There will be many opinions but my choice would be hard line.

Whitby uses hardline as much as possible. That makes sense to me. Braided is attractive where visible and essentially "pretty ups" rubber hose. For me I go with braided where rubber hose is required and visible. For example, I am running just plain rubber hose from the gas tank to my pre- filter, then hardline form pre-filter to fuel pump, hardline pump to engine bay, then braided to post filter to chrome fuel rail. It is true braided adds some additional protection to just plain rubber hose but hardline is much more durable and stainless hardline even more so.

Some additional points:
It is true one should avoid 90 degree bends as much as possible, but with 3/8 inch fuel lines and the Holley HP pump at 125 GPH, there is more than enough flow that the 90 degree brass fittings do not make any significant difference.
In my opinion the Holley HP pumps are very quiet compared to the older or standard Holley pumps.
