I know it's a little bit early for one of these but my donor pallet from AWJ Performance is scheduled to arrive tomorrow in a 1,400 LBS crate that UPS is going to leave in the driveway :(! Don't know how I'm going to get it up to the garage. Going to take a bunch of pictures! Hope everything goes well, and a HUGE thanks to AWJ Performance for their help!

That's awesome, I am thinking about going with an AJW package myself. I will have some time to think about it all as I have not even ordered a kit yet and they are over a year out! Yikes!

Get a towing rope, wrap it around the crate and hook it up to a tie down on one of your cars and drag it :p but on a serious-er note you can rent engine cranes with wheels and roll the engine and trans to the garage. Then I just go piece by piece. have fun and take post pictures!

Timmy, I think if you have a pocket of $20 bills the crate might be dropped at the garage door or inside.
I'm envious and I can't wait to get my crate from AWJ !
Photos. Photos. Photos. Please. Please. (So I'll have something to dream about.)

Checked with my local UPS center and they claimed to have "no" dollies.... Asked how that was possible and after a little chatting the lady said that it wasn't allowed to bring a dolly in the truck(again why) and finally she said that even though it wasn't allowed they do it anyway :p! So that'll hopefully pan out! Now the photos, there will be an abundance of them! Don't know if I actually plan on opening the package until my 818 arrives! Might take the engine out and store it in the heated garage though..... Though with what 818donors said the engine is pretty much moisture proof so I don't think I'm going to have any worries!

Thanks but no thanks! If they don't bring a dolly then I just plan on unpacking the crate and using an engine hoist to bring in the heavier stuff and just carrying the rest of the boxes in.

A helpful thread. Made me think. When my donor crate shows up, I'll be ready with a few 4' lengths of 5" diameter PVC pipe to use as rollers to get the crate into my garage. I may consider the harbor freight casters later, in case I feel the need to move the crate around in the garage very much before unloading it.

Pick up a pair of these:

1000lbs capacity each. Set the package on that, and roll 'er up to your door. Afterwards, strap 'em to the 818 chassis to provide mobility during the build. I did that during my MK3 roadster build --made it REAL easy to move it around the shop during the early build stages. All that for just 35 bucks.

I have a bunch of the standard car roller dolleys (3 sets?) they work for anything with some creativity, some dimensional lumber, and a dewalt driver with screws... ;-) Right now 2 of them are being used as makeshift roll away engine stands... make a padded cradle, set down engine easily and roll it where it is out of the way.

Well...... Just got news that due to the storm we had the crate don't arrive until 12 to the distribution center which was after the truck went out so they won't be delivering it today :(.... They've rescheduled for tomorrow so I'm hoping that everything goes well then! Guess that gives me even more time to prepare...

timmy318
01-22-2013, 01:25 PM
Well.... AWJ said that a customer who received his kit before me claimed that there was a problem with the control arms (something like that). They've shipped it back and it should be arriving today. Then, hopefully I'll receive it on Thursday!

also since your residential its going to come in two (2) smaller crates now, rather than one large one.
Supposed to get picked up here tomorrow, I will email or call with the details!

timmy318
02-05-2013, 02:20 PM
Yes, Santa did deliver some crates last week :D but I decided not to open them until I got back from Tampa, FL. I plan on opening them later on today and will post some pics etc....

timmy318
02-06-2013, 07:54 PM
Well...... I've taken some pics but it's refuseing to let me post these pics I took :(! The crates are in great shape. My donor card stated that one of my wheels was a goner and when I opened my crates I checked the wheels and found nothing wrong with them..... Maybe AWJ replaced it from another donor they had !

Tim, in Photobucket copy the IMG code for a photo (when I click on the IMG code it copies) and then in the forum past it (Ctrl V). Like this:

Now you can copy/paste the other photos. Practice makes perfect :-)
Other guys: how do I copy more than one photo in Photobucket?

Hey Tim, the goodies from AJW look good! I look forward to Santa dropping crates in my driveway.

Engine is already mounted to the trans, everything is clearly labeled so you don't have to unwrap each part to inventory it(almost done with that!):

This box contains the wiring harness, it was in the box with the wheels/seats:

Timmy,

I was glad to meet you and your friend in Tampa at the cruise-in. Your donor looks great and you will be ready to start building soon after the arrival of the 818 kit. I enjoyed visiting with your Mom and Dad ... pretty cool people! On the last picture you posted, it looks like the right front wheel of an absolutely gorgeous '33 Hot Rod! It's a beautiful Rod and won the well-deserved "Best of Show" award. Best of luck on the build and I will be following your build thread.

Removed the timing-belt covers and starting to think about replacing the pulleys (new up-pipe and headers are on the way from AJW Performance :D:

Timmy, how many miles are on the engine? Since your changing the timing belt, I'm assuming you didn't spring for the upgrade and went with the base kit. Are you happy with that decision? Personally if I decide to go with AJW I think I'd be inclined to go stage 2 and have the mechanicals done.

timmy318
02-26-2013, 09:26 PM
The engine had 94K on it. My donor has a new STi short block complete with new rods, cranks, pistons and bearings. I'm not actually changing the timing belt but removed the covers to paint them. Also going to either order new pulleys or try and clean 'em up. First though, my transmission is going to get clean and painted. My donor is stage 2 ready and in the 818 it will probably produce around 220 whp with the new up-pipe and headers arriving soon from AJW Performance.

Got a little bit more done this afternoon. The transmission should be ready for primer tomorrow. Using the scissor lift with a piece of plywood on top of it as a "work-bench" :p. My dad took apart the alternator and primed the casing. Started on cleaning on a couple of the brakets. AJW said that they have an engine cover in stock or will have one soon so that eliminates the need for me to fabricate one! AJW said that the headers and up-pipe will be shipped tomorrow so it's starting to look a bit like christmas all over again :D!

Well, things are going good! Got part of the trans primed, finished up the brackets and on to painting the alternator casing. Found a nice metallic blue that I like. Only going to paint this one-half of the casing for the alt to see how it actually turns out. The trans and all other brackets are going to be aluminum painted.

The only bad thing about paint, is that it chips (at least when I do it) and then it bugs me later. I'm not sure if I'm going to paint, or just clean my trans (or leave it alone...lol). Not that there's a better solution to paint I can think of.

Well, I haven't updated this in a while :p! We've been cleaning parts and we've been busy sending parts here and there.
- Decided that the paint wouldn't hold up on the calipers so stripped them and sent them off the the powder-coater with the front axle housing
- Rebuilt the rear wheel housing: sandblasted, painted and replaced the bearings and seals
- Rebuilt the emergency brake with new brake shoes and hardware kit
- Sandblasted and painted the rotors
- Sent the headers & up-pipe off to be ceramic coated in NY
I won't be posting any pics until sometime next week when I get back from Bondurant :D (excited if you can tell)! Anyone taken one of their courses?

And yet again I must say I haven't updated this little thread in a while. It's been close to a month now :(. All I can say about the Bondurant course is that I probably will never have that much fun packed into three days again. When we got back from Phoenix, we decided we needed a new edition to the family and set out to find a perfect match. Well, the match found us and it was a pretty sweet one at that:

'07 Porsche Boxster with 12K on the odometer. Previous owner rarely drove it because of his other toys (found a pic on the internet that looks just about identical to the one we bought, the weather isn't to good outside and the car isn't cleaned :p).

The headers and up-pipe arrived from New York where we had them ceramic coated. They look white now but they said that they will probably not stay that way for long. We had them ceramic coated by swaintech and used the white lighting ceramic coating.

The front suspension has been completely stripped down and the parts powder/painted, and installed new bearings/seals. Due to severe galling of aluminum threads when we disassembled some of the parts we had to install stainless steel helicoils to repair the threads. A nice plus is that the donor from AJW Performance included new rotors and brake pads :D!

Here's a pic of the....... right rear suspension assembly. For those wondering why a picture of the up-pipe isn't included is because we took yet another bracket off the engine and primed it and then decided to try and put the new goodies on it to only find that the up-pipe bolts to that specific bracket so we only installed the headers on engine with the up-pipe waiting in a nice box waiting to be unpacked. That's all for now, more pics will be surfacing soon. Been counting down the days till I get my 818: 56 days :D.

What all is going to be involved in maintaining the power steering? I was under the impression that it was quite a big custom job.

Might be as simple as making braided AN lines to go to the front (assuming it doesn't restrict flow over that long a distance). I made AN lines for my WRX for looks. Cost about $100 for the steel fittings and teflon lined tubing.

Have another update here. Didn't do much of anything on the car today, had to help someone in the family move houses. My dad installed the up-pipe and took the O2 sensor out of the old one and attached it onto the new one :D! Anyone getting an 818 around Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, or any other place around here (Owensboro, KY)?

no, just long hoses and higher fluid volumes in the system, not a really "big" deal, should work as designed tho with about 1/2 the weight it will be boosted too much!

Well, it's about time for m 818 to be arriving. Supposed to be picked up sometime this week from FFR and delivered by the end of next week :D! The parts have been just laying around the garage waiting until the day. Ordered the ISIS 3-Cell starter kit this week. Been looking at some wheels/tires (waiting on the official specs though before purchasing). Also created a recces in he garage floor where we'll be placing our scissor lift. That way it's out of the way. The wiring harness is a mess ...... No exactly the prettiest sight of all things in the build. Previously we used ramps to get the car above the lift but now we can avoid that problem. Pics are soon to follow but thought I'd just update this thread since its been awhile/

Keeping up that PPD count aren't we now ;)! Yea, I'll be suffering from sleep deprivation for about a week or so now. Found some goodies that I'm hopefully going install on the 818 (need it hands on to measure some things to see if it's even possible to fit).

Well, 818 #11 arrived this morning :D! Gotta say, without Stewart Transport I'd probably still be scratching my head on how I could get this car into the garage! Don't have time for much of an update until later on tonight or tomorrow (gee I wonder why :p) but I just wanted to post that it arrived safe and sound! Gotta say, it's nice to finally see the 818 in person! For some reason I always thought the humps behind the head were a bit bigger...... Well, hope everyone's weekend has been great!

I better not look at your build thread because Wayne's & Eric's threads have already done damage to my expenses spreadsheet...... I get my tank tomorrow morning, pricing will come after the test fit. Boyds has pricing figured out for the current tank but if the tank needs to be modified and it takes more production time, then the price would increase. Best to release the pricing just once...

Well. It's been a busy week (sadly could not get as much finished with the 818 as I originally wanted to due to other things :(). We took the intake manifold off and painted it red (no influence by Erik's build whatsoever ;)). Our ISIS Power parts should be coming in any day now (yet another Christmas of hopefully more to come). Also ordered the Boyd's tank when it became available (don't have to mess with the Subie fuel pump etc...).

20090
Got the panels all drilled and held in place. Tomorrow work on the front suspension should begin (I know, I know, slow paced). We used Dyna-mat for our '33 but are thinking of using Lizard-Skin this time around, anyone have any experience with it? Pros/cons?

20089
That right there is what our harness looks like right now. Scary and intimidating. As I've been toying around on the car, my father's been working night and day on this harness. My dad is re-building the Subie wiring harness, stripping out anything that is not needed for engine management (the non engine management will be done through ISIS). He is developing detailed schematic diagrams and once complete, will be shared and hopefully make it easier for future 818 builders.

I'm also considering lizard skin, I've seen it used on roadsters and some advice in this area would be helpful. The ISIS system is very cool, your using the donor harness for engine management, does thin include the gauge harness?

Hazelwwp

The ISIS system is very cool, your using the donor harness for engine management, does thin include the gauge harness?

Yes. The gauge harness is included. Essentially, I have cut off the connectors needed with about 6-24 inches of wire and then reassemble the harness by soldering a new length of wire point-to-point. That is, for example, I know I need the ECU and the engine harness. I cut off the four connectors that connect to the ECU and the several connectors that go to the engine. The engine will, of course, be mounted in the rear of the car; I have decided to mount the ECU in front of the front firewall where there will be easy access. I then solder a wire from point-to-point between the connectors - one at a time. I am developing drawings and will share the information with the community when I get a little further along. I should end up with a neat harness with only the stuff we are using and it will be custom fit to the 818 so there won't be big looms of wire cluttering up the build.
