Just thought I'd sing the praises of the unsung hero of these projects - the Uni-Bit or step bits as they are sometimes called. I bought a set not too long ago to do the holes in the windscreen arms and couldn't believe how nice they drill through the brass. I've used them for some of the body holes, too, and found the same thing.
If you don't have one of these - at least the one that goes from 1/8" to 1/2", I strongly recommend it as a purchase you won't regret.

I used to be very skeptical about the step bits until I started seeing a lot of professionals using them so I tried finally (thought it was a gimmik). I couldn't believe how many uses they have and the feeling of having more control during the process. Now they are standard equipment in my tool box. WEK.

I get mine at Harbor Freight for cheap and they last forever. I recently picked up stepless bit similar to the step bit. Seems to be a little bit better at cleaning up existing holes without the steps grabbing the irregular squiggles a standard bit leaves.
Good Luck,

Got mine at HF also. Found them most useful when I was installing numerous rubber grommets in the firewall and other locations for wires and cables. A much bigger hole that the size of the wire is needed for the od of the grommet....................the step bits work great.

Chris, so very true, the are IMHO the only way to drill the brass on the windscreen.
They are also a huge helper though in drilling out the rollbars and any other 1/4+ hole in the steel.

One of the two best tools I have. The other being my Dremel.
