Well I ordered the kit and pick it up 2/4/13. I began to strip what I need from my 93 donor. I am going to go through the engine, trans and rear and make sure everything is sound. Although the car looked rough it ran and drove great. Here are some starter pictures.

I took advantage of the 80 degree days we had for the last 7-9 days. I was able to disassemble the engine, trans and rear. I cleaned, sandblasted and painted all 3. I rebuilt the engine replacing rings, bearings, seals, gaskets, intake, headers and installed billet specialties front serpentine kit. Thanks to all fellow 33 posters who gave me help so far. I really appreciate it. The trans only needed seals and a quick shifter. The rear is a 3.08 (yea!) and I replaced seals and brake components. I am waiting for the 5 lug conversion with my kit. Here are some photos. 19 days till I pickup my kit. I hope the weather is kind.

Well I got my new flywheel yesterday. The old one had cracks. I installed the rear cam plug, rear main seal, flywheel, Ram clutch disc and Pressure plate. Then I installed the bellhousing, T/O bearing, starter and transmission. I am almost ready for install when my kit arrives. Jason from FFR emailed me yesterday. They no longer can get the 5-lug axle/drum kit for my 8.8 rear. I wanted a good excuse to go to rear discs anyway. I am calling him today to swap for the rear disc kit. I ordered the 5-lug axle kit from Summit yesterday. I am getting closer to 2/4/13 every day. I leave on the 3rd to head to Wareham. Wish me luck on the roads. T.W.

What headers did you go with?

I went with the polished S/S headers from Summit.
I ended up with Ford racing headers after all.

Ok. They look nice. I went with the BBK's. I hope they line up okay with the FFR exhaust setup.

Here is my tires. They came from Tire Rack yesterday. 235/40ZR17 fronts and 285/35ZR18 rears. Also here is apicture of my truck and trailer ready to head to FFR. I am leaving Sunday 2/3/13 about 3:00 A.M. I hope to make northern Jersey and Wareham by 10 on Monday. It is 65 degrees here and sunny in Florida. I am sure it will be colder up there. The forecast is for snow. It has been 20 years since I drove in it. I hope it is like riding a bike you never forget.

It is 14' 6" long inside and 72" wide. FFR told me it would fit fine. I saw post where guys used 12' trailers to pick up the kit. I am getting the whole kit with hardtop. A/C , electric steering, power windows, ect. I am very excited but I am heading out to a Florida Gator basketball game. I am a huge fan. Take care and wish me luck on my trip.

Safe trip! Make sure to bring your camera.
Oh sure, just cruise through NJ and don't stop to say "hi"....and you could see HR #003.
Seriously, I am 5 minutes from I-287. About 5 minutes North of I-80. I do not reccomend for you to trailer through NYC via I-95.

Olli-
Great point about I-95 through NYC! It's tough enough on a regular day without hauling a trailer! I suspect it's too late to change his plans. Perhaps he will change the route on his return trip.
Wallace- Have an awesome and safe trip. I bet you will have a silly grin on your face the whole way home!! Congratulations!!

Just a side note... You may have an issue with the location of the stock oil filter location. I had a short Motorcraft oil filter on my 351 and after reclocking the EPS motor, it hits the housing and I cannot put it back on. I'm not sure if I can find an even shorter one or I may have to buy a filter relocation kit. Here is a pic.

Thanks Olli. I will take a look at it. I measured the one I have (Motorcraft D4ZZ-6731-B) and it appears that I is the same size. I found this adapter and it appears that it should work. It is a Ford Racing product and it looks as though it swivels to any location. If I install this pointing forward with a short filter, I think it should work. (90° Oil Filter Adapter Kit, M-6880-A50)

Well I made it to Bridgeport Conn. Sunday night. The traffic thru Phila. and New York was nothing. I guess evryone was watching the super bowl. I had great weather and roads the entire trip. I used 287 to go to my brothers home on my way back. I am posting this from his home. My only glitch so far is my cell died on the first day. I will post pictures when I get home on Thursday. FFR was great. The tour and people there are awesome. This is a must do for anyone who is buying a kit IMO. We loaded up and I was on my way by 9:40 A.M. Monday. Sorry I could not meet with some of you. I am on a tight schedule. I thank all for your kind posts. I am stoked to get started. Only a few parts were B/O so I am very happy. All fit easy in my trailer with room to spare.

Well I made it home safe in one day. I left Pa. at 04:00 and made it home at 21:00. Here are some pictures from the visit. Today I will unload the boxes and start inventory. On Friday I'll get help and unload the body and chassis. I was nice to sleep at home and be back with my loving wife. Thanks again for all the kind posts. If I can offer a suggestion on inventory that helped me a lot.
-Staple your parts list manifest together and number every page. Make a book of it.
-Open every box and tick of each item off marking shortages if any (wont be many if any) on the bottom of page. I initialed each page once very part was accounted for.
-Each box has a box number... mark the page number or numbers from your list on the box near the box number sticker. (sometimes there are parts from different pages in one box, other times there are multiple boxes listed on one page marked by the picker at F5)
-also be sure the a box number is on very page as well
-Its also helpful to mark both the box number, page number and brief description on multiple corners of the box so its visible regardless of how you stack your boxes
-Once complete (full days work/fun) and each box and page are cross referenced, you will be able to find the parts you need much easier. You will remember seeing them but won't be quite sure where... They all start looking the same after a while.
-Say you are looking for a part or group of parts... Just find them on the list, look for the boxes with the right page number -and you're off to the races.
One last thing... Sometimes you won't use all the parts in a box on the day you are doing something...DON'T REMOVE THE UNUSED PARTS from that box. You will obviously need them eventually and probably won't remember where you put them. Your only reference at one point is your master list.
Oh yeah, once the master list is done, send F5 an email about any shortages or call... And just in case... Scan your master list if you can you you have an electronic copy just in case something happens to it.

Yes it is. It only took me till I was 50 years old to have it. Lots of working and saving. I built 90% of it myself. My chassis # is F5R1000513HR I guess that is the 513th one built? I am done inventory and a few bolts, washers, filler neck cover and led flasher were missing. 9 different items are B/O. So I feel pretty good. I need to find a 0 - 90 ohm fuel gauge to replace mine. I am using the Boyd tank. I can't seem to find the unit online . It has a black rim and a silver short sweep face. Anyone have any ideas? I sent an inquirey to Autometer. I started painted some parts. This weekend is nice here 75 degrees so I will paint as much as I can till rain comes on Tuesday.

I just got one last week. Don't let the picture or specs fool you... It's misleading.. The bezel rim is black nickel as it says in description. also if you go to autometers site. Same identical gauge as the one in your kit but 0-90 ohm. Below a pic of both... The one I got and the one just got.

Well on Saturday the 9th I finished up my rear and installed the 3 link parts to it. I also painted the front suspension pieces. On Sunday I painted the rest of the parts that need painting and installed the 8.8 in the chassis. Also I marked all my tin for drilling. Today I put on the front suspension and steering rack. I had to use the BFH to install the front suspension. I eventually won the war.:p

I have the front brakes installed, the pedal assembly, steering components and the firewall. I may have to reclock the P/S, but I will wait till my motor and trans mounts come from B/O. I put the brake resv. on the outside for ease of filling and checking. I made a little alum bracket to hold the master cyl. hoses off of the pedals. I used 10/32 S/S button heads to mount the firewalls. I plan on doing a engine turn finish myself after I am ready to take car apart for paint. Down the road aways.

Well I ran into a snag. I finished up my brake lines. and the next thing in the manual was mount the steering wheel. The adapter slid down on the column easy and I noticed no air gap. Sure enough if I tighten the nut by hand 1/8 turn the whole thing locks up. I can't be sure if it is a bad adapter or column. I just know it won't work with what I got. I am calling FFR today when I get time. :(

I installed the fuse panel and temped in the wire harness. I installed the horns and finished up the steering wheel. I am waiting on my motor and trans mounts. Joe at FFR said maybe next week. I mocked up my radiator, condensor and grill. Then I drilled all the aluminum I could and put 2 coats of lizard skin sound deadner on them. I will add the ceramic heat barrier next. I caught the flu for a few days so it slowed me down some. I got back at it some today.

Are you putting the deadener on the panels that ill be covered by the carpet, or on the underside of the vehicle?
wallace18

The shroud I got from Michael Everson. He has some nice stuff on his website. I bought a few tools from him as well. He is a great guy to work with. The lizard skin is on the outside. I am using the sound deadner and ceramic coating. You have to install the deadner first then the ceramic. On the inside I am using a differant material from Eastwood for heat and sound control. I used this method on a 78 Vette I did a resto rod deal on and had great results.

I may be asking the previous question a different way, and if so, I apologize!
Is there a benefit to using the Lizard Skin on the exterior (both of their products), and then the Eastwood product for the interior. Why not use both Lizard Skin products and then the Eastwood product over the top all on the interior panels of the car? Is there a particular benefit to both coats of the Lizard Skin on the outside, with the Eastwood on the inside? Or, just personal preference?
I am not challenging you, rather just trying to understand for my own clarification. Thanks!!

Thanks Steve, I was actually wondering the same thing....maybe putting the lizard skin on the outside protects the aluminum from the elements?

The lizard skin is also like some OEM coverings for body protection. It will help with stones and such. To me it serves no use on the inside. This is where the additional sound proofing made for the inside has it over the lizard skin. I guess one could use the lizard skin inside and out. If you watch the 2 guys garage video of the 33 build you will see them use it on the outside. This is just my way of doing it. It has worked for me on several cars. TEHO.

I was able to do some work on the A/C part of the 33 the last 2 days. I finished up the grill, Cond, cond lines, fan and radiator work. I made some extra braces for the lines. I installed A/C's for years and I know what vibration can do to aluminum lines. I also installed the bulkhead fittings and evaporator. I used 1/4-20 rivnuts and S/S bolts for the mounting. Hopefully my mounts should be here late Tuesday and I can install the engine and trans. Then I really can start moving along. I am really enjoying this build. I can't remember when I had this much fun building a car. :D

See now that's great news. I heard the same things and was a bit worried... I want to send mine out to be plated. I'll likely mock it up just to make sure all the brackets work and align anyway... But good to know F5 has debugged quite a few things.

I had to trim the drivers side motor mount a little to clear the Electra-Steer unit. Other than that it went in very easy. That 5.0 was made to fit in that chassis well.

I hooked up my coolant bottle and ran a aluminum line down the frame to the radiator. I also ran an alum. fuel line and mounted my Boyd gas tank. I made a brace for the clutch cable. It is a little crude looking now but works great. When I pull off the firewall for engine turning I will pretty up the braket some. No one will see it, but I know it is there. It really cut down on the flex. I made it out of scrap from a gate opener.

Wallace... Yer a maniac!
Looks like we are using the same setup... Fuel pump, regulator and boyd tank. Did you use aluminum line from your AN fittings and braided lines or the rubber? I was figuring on using metal myself.

I used an aluminum line from Summit 3/8". It was very easy to work with. The fellow who gave me the FFR tour told me that is all he uses. He gave me a few tips as well. Heck I am retired and this is like playing golf for me. I love this sort of work. If I am lucky enough to go to heaven some day, I'll build Factory five stuff there.

I have everthing but the lights and dash gauges working now. My wheels are here and I am going to put on the tires this week and hopefully put the body on for the first time on Friday. Stay tooned for more action.

I got Summit 17x8- 5.25"BS front and 18x9- 6.0" BS rear Legend 5 wheels. I was able to get them quick. My original FFR wheels are backordered. So I canceled out of them. I needed to get the chassis rolling. I need my lift for a clutch job on another car.

It Lives!!!! After a few days of fixings oil, coolant and brake fluid leaks I was able to drive the gocart around to the neighbors. My wife helped bleed the brakes so she called shotgun. It runs perfect. Lots of power. Breaks the wheels loose at 1/4 throttle. Take a look at my high tech gas pedal cable setup. It is 40 days since I picked it up at Wareham. I have done all the work myself so far. This is a great kit. I highly recommend it to anyone who has doubts. You must have good skills. But it is so much fun. I am not a car warrior but you never know! LOL.

Well I have not posted for a week now. I came down with a bad internal infection and fought a fever for 4 days. I am fine now and back at it. I worked on the trans tunnel and will mount it tomorrow. I finished up some wiring as well. I was able to mount the body using a winch and straps by myself. It worked very easy to my surprise. The firewall is off on the LS. Where did I hear that one before? So off the body came. Today I made holes. I cut out for the gas cap, dash insert I made, the access panels in the front, A/C and defrost vents. I was glad I did this outside. Fiberglass dust city. I broke my camera. I had to borrow the wife's. Don't tell her! I see everyone else is making progress as well. Keep up the good work!.

I was able to make a body sling. This allowed me to use a 12V winch to raise and lower the body on the chassis. It works great. I am so glad Tony from FFR told me to bolt on as much as I can. The firewall had to come off about 5 times till I got the fit right to the body. I have been using 10-32 and 10-24 button head screws. I had to use rivnuts on the ls firewall to body due to the A/C. The rest I could use screws with washers and locknuts. All S/S from Totally Stainless. They are a good source for S/S hardware at a good price. Then after measuring about 100 times in about 20 differant places I finished attaching the body. I can't stress enough how you need to take you time and square up the body before drilling and mounting. Here is some photos.

Wallace. How do you like the quality of the kit. I originally looked at the 33 but then I saw the price of the 818 and that was more doable for me...also I was at a restoration shop in Philly last month picking up parts for a el camino I'm having done and they had a 33 there they were doing the body work for the owner on. And they weren't very happy with the fit and finish of the body. How does yours seem.
wallace18
03-24-2013, 09:40 AM
It is a kit car. You must do a fair amount of body work and the fit and finish is up to the builder or body man. I knew this going in. With the 818 a lot of new people will be buying their first kit ever. This is not like a model car where everything fits perfect. It takes a fair amount of work. It can be trying at times. But if it was easy anyone could do it. Like everything else in life you get what you put in. I enjoy the challenge myself. It is not for someone without skills. JMO.

Today was mount the passenger door day. After watching the videos from the body area of the 33 forum about 5 times. I took good notes and went at it. I thank Erik Hanson who did the videos. I am sure it kept me from having a headache. It went very well so far. I have to do some more trimming and adjusting. I am very happy with the fit of the door. All I can say is take your time and trim a little at a time. You may take it apart 10 times but it is worth a nice fit.

When I was checking the mounting for the gas cap The unit came apart. The outer ring that attaches to the body came away from the center. It was glued together. I think someone forgot to weld it. Here is the fix I came up with. I ended up using 6-32 S/S screws and washers to hold both together. I know it will not separate now.

Over the last few days I finished both doors, the waterfall, rollbar and trunk. Lots of taking on and off and shaping little by little. I am waiting on some metal to make the trunk keep its curve from Tim. I am very pleased with the fit of everything so far. I had to fabricate my own cable clamps for the inner door handels. The kit ones would not work at all for my car. I enjoyed the fabrication though. I borrowed an idea from another builder but used wood instead of cardboard. This allowed me to set the rollbar down on the waterfall for an exact hole. All I can say is take your time and use screws anywhere you can so it is easy to take apart.

I guess you may be wondering what I have been up to the last 5 days. Well I worked on my hood and side panels. I still need to add material to the front of my panels. I like the rake of my grill so I have to add some. I have decided to open up the side panels some more than these pictures to see the engine better. Then I will install large hexagonal mesh to the inside of the openings. I installed my rear exhaust system and roadster windshield. I had to modify a lot but it is part of the journey.
165061650716508
I will do my coupe top and power windows next week. Then it is off to paint hopefully by the 24th. Huegenics is going to paint it. Check out there website and you can see my Vette I restored . Heres some photos.

After my fiasco with the roadster windshield vs coupe top I was able to mount the coupe top for a great fit. (see don't do what I did. post) I used blue painters tape to hold the weather seals to the bottom of the top. This way I can remove them for paint and still use them for final assembly. I used the same electric winch to raise and lower the top as I used for the body. Made the job super easy. I cut out for the power windows and mounted them as well as my door solenoids. Make sure you eat a big bowl of patience for breakfast before starting this deal. Overall I am happy with the turn out. I am going to try to find an alternative to the FFR felted door window seals. They are on B/O and I heard some not so nice things about them from other builders. I hope to have it at the paint shop by the 24th. :p

It handels like a slot car. The ride is better than I thought it would be. The 5.0 is a mild build but will smoke the tires in 1st and 2nd gear easy. I don't know how some guys drive with over 400hp. I guess you have to be careful with the throttle. I'm sure yours will be as nice or better. The 33 is neat because it allows so much to customize. No 2 are alike.

Great News today! I went to Ocala to the regional DMV for inspection and title. I was a little worried to start with. Well the whole DMV office came out and drooled all over the 33. The insp took 3 minutes. Just a check of the FFR plate I affixed to the firewall. I payed the taxes and went away with it titled as a 1933. They told me on the phone earlier it would be titled a 2013. But they changed their mind and titled it a 1933 replica. Yahoo!: rolleyes::)

Thanks, Both of you sure will look cool driving to cruise ins and shows on the road together for sure. I like the hoops on your 33.
Wallace18 has done a great job. The issue we ran into was inconsistent thickness in the mold at the top of the door. The molding seemed to be thicker towards the outside of the door and thinner to the inside. We went through and built up the underside of the top of the door panel but then the strips would not fit. Some have sanded or grinder the thickness along the edge of the door slot to a point they will fit. We chose a similar solution to Wallace18, however we fastened the angle iron to the bottom side of the panel with panel bonding material. We attempted to use aftermarket strips similar to Steele but the ones we chose were too tight against the window. After a while the glue bonding the strip to the angle iron wore off. We rebounded the strips and used set screws in them to hold them. A similar effect to what Wallace18 has done.

I used a engine turn kit from Eastwood that they no longer sell. Now a days I use a scuff pad on my drill press.
