I didn't win any auction!

I wonder what I am doing wrong?

Anybody else using copart and can provide some feedback?

watch the auction live and prepare to bid what you think it is worth... my 70K 05 rollover had no other live bids, my pre bid took it...
the only way to see what they sell for is to watch the auction live, and it goes very fast. I thought that the 06-07s that I observed went for more than I wanted to spend for a donor. see the working on the donor thread for more details

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately I was in a meeting at noon today and was not able to be live. I thought my prebid was high enough but I guess not. It will be interesting to see if someone starts posting pictures of it!

So to recap a good tip:

1. You have to be live to get the best results.
2. Knowing a fair price range for the year/mileage/damage.

I have been watching coparts here in the PNW.
06 and 07 WRX's have generally been going for more than what I am willing to pay.

As RM1 discovered, I have decided that roll overs are a good buy to watch for since it automatically drops the price any salvage yard is willing to pay, because of the much lower value from fewer if any sellable body parts.

Thanks Mind. The majority of them in this area are front collision damage, so I wonder if it is a worthwhile buy without actually seeing the vehicle. The one I bid on was rear collision, and it looked like from the pictures all of the rear drive components where undamaged.

So what would be a fair range for an 06-07 salvage? Maybe that is simply my challenge.

Do you guys only bids on the cars with "engine start logo"? I m afraid to bid on car if i m not sure if the engine is good

It had to have been running when it rolled! haha
I spent $ to get inspections on a couple cars, even then if it has been in a lot a while even a starts and runs might not start and copart doesn't allow ANY assistance to start a vehicle
I avoided front damage as the engine can be easily damaged due to timing belt placement etc....
I pulled engine covers, checked compression, pulled oil pan etc... engine appears fine. some risk is inherant in buying from a yard
I could have bought a running WRX but to get the $ anywhere near $5k they had enough miles that I would do a rebuild before using one in a kit
copart gives you enough photos to make an educated guess... I avoided obviously modified cars for example
run a carfax or autocheck report... mine was a one owner car with a clean report.
I expect to recoup the full price I paid for the car inparts sold... from a roll over with only the left rear door undamaged EVERY other panel was crunched (note, this doesn't include recovering the shipping and copart fees)

I have about $6k in my 70K, 2005 donor, all parts refurbished with new brakes, ceramic header, new timing kit, oil, water pumps, lightened flywheel, new clutch, quaife, powder coated parts all over, adjustable rear lower lateral links, depowered rack and aluminum front LCA. I'm pretty sure I'll squeeze another $800-1000 out in sale of donor pieces on ebay

Thats why I am surprised no one has jumped on my donor yet. 2006 WRX, Running, no front end damage, 70k miles, no need to bid or pay for an inspection or extra buyer fees, gate fees, membership fees, Plus no rust anywhere and for what I paid, $5500.

I watch the auctions since I need parts for another car and I have been seeing that the prices have been going up for the 06-07 cars, 2000-2005 are cheep and everywhere but with all the improvements its makes sense to spend a little bit more to go with the 06-07 cars. I know junk yards can't get 06-07 cars right now. Even the Subi guys want to upgrade older cars to the newer motor and larger brakes. wait until the 818 ships and you'll see they will be even harder to get.

Location? I'd say that was a fine deal but I'm sure that you are out west... Someone local to you should jump on that for $5500

Yep, he's in CA IIRC. Certainly a good deal, but I think most people seem hung up on finding something local. IMO, shipping an excellent donor for $500ish in the grand scheme of a $15k car vs finding a local car you aren't as satisfied with is nothing.

yup.. I just paid...$950 for donor number 2 from Coparts :) ... so after flipping my last one...i'd say I am going in the right direction with the 818 project...lol...

what did you buy this time Eric?

Erik W. Treves

hee hee... another 02...but it was an automatic...so nobody was really looking at it...was was just kinda playin around with the auction bid button and was going to get out at $1000 and I won it.... then I found a 5 speed tranny that had a blown 3rd and 4th gear in it at the local Subi dealer and they weren't ever going to use it...so I offerred them $900 for IF....they rebuilt it to new AND installed my OBX LSD diff....and they said yes! .... so all I have left to do is the wire harness mod to convert the auto to manual so the ECU doesn't freak out...there are plenty of threads on this swap. So I am on my way..... the only sticky point right now is tht te car is up in NY and with all the flood damage cars up there, my shippment has been delayed big time...so I still wait for my donor to arrive.,... in the mean time I am collecting parts...I also have presold several items already...about $500 dollars worth....so looking good....and I bought a new tow vehicle today as well...F150 ECOBOOST :D ...very nice!

here is the donor... like I said..."probably" won't flip this one...."good news", carfax says this was the very first accident to the car.....

What kind of coin are they charging to ship it to you from NY? That's quite a few miles to 'Bama!

How many miles Eric? Looks like a great donor!

Erik W. Treves

Coparts charged $910 to ship to Hunsville. As far as miles..unknown. the battery is out of it. Carfax last recorded it had 60,000 in '06, so I guess we'll see. Hope it pans out...so far I am very hopeful. I will drop a battery in it, and see what we see...like unwrapping a present...

bstuke,

You will find prices I have seen sell at IAA auctions in the Google link on this thread... They should be comparable in prices to Copart.. I have included WRX & non-WRX '02-'07. Also inside that thread is a link to the thread I made for the prices paid by those on this forum. This info may help in determining expected price.

You should update your profile so people have an idea where the car is located. You mentioned you have one for sale but I have no idea where you are...

the only sticky point right now is tht te car is up in NYI have been limiting my search to 06-07 and a 500 mile range, in anticipation of picking it up instead of having it shipped.

They will let you pick it up, right?

I updated my profile. The car is in San Carlos CA. To be honest I would never buy parts or a parts car from anywhere where they salt the roads. I lived in NJ for 10 years and once a car is just a few years old, the corrosion was absolutely horrible (relative to CA, TX or even AZ cars). I even buy used cars here and send them back east for relatives. The hard reality is that these cars are AWD so they DO get used in the winter and that is enough for me to never consider one from the "salt belt".

One of the reasons I was staying away from cars up north or out in the Rockies.

So frustrating to have the perfect donor so close, yet not able to do anything about it. I just hope as good a deal comes up in a couple years.

Here's his FS thread. I thought it used to have a nice description and a pic of a partially disassembled white 06.
