View Full Version : Rear Suspension/axle adjustment?

I noticed that some 33HR's have the rear wheel centered in the wheel well and some others do not.
My question is can you adjust the placement of the rear wheels in the wheel well?
thanks,

No, the suspension control arms are not adjustable. For some reason the rear axle is slightly ahead of center when at the reccomended ride hieght. That is exagerated if you raise the rear of the car and the suspension swings on the control arms.

The axle is off center in the fender by 1" on the 4 link at suggested ride height. Several of us have verified this already.
You can use new upper and lower control arms to correct this and you would also need to stretch the driveshaft.
The lowers would be custom, the uppers are just off label but i don't recall the application.
When I had my lowers made I added sway bar tabs to them as well so the Mustang sway just bolts on.
Search my posts here under myjones and on FFcars under Buck70 on there to see the thread "stretched" and see the pics
in the gallery. I went a bit farther on mine to add ground clearance for my running boards and still have proper
geometry after all the changes were done.
Some of the corrected ones you saw were likely IRS set-ups
I think there are a few 4 links like mine that have been fixed but I'm not sure if any of the 3 links have.

I have "frozen" my IRS design and will be starting on the prototype soon. This bolt in unit will have fore and aft adjustment to place it where you want it with variations in ride height.

Just snapped a few pictures of the final 4 link and rear fuel tank combo including the new shock mounts that bolt to the torque boxes
It also shows the new UCA frame tabs, limit straps, bump-stops and custom 4 links with Heim joints and anti-sway bar tabs
My shocks are moved inboard to clear the fuel tank cage/hitch receiver frame but those plates would also cure the common issue where the rear coils rub the paint off of the inner fenders on all the typical FF set-ups

Dale, where did you find the spacers for the Heim joints to center them in the frame tabs? Did you make them or buy? I used the sleeve that was originally inside the bushings and found Heim joints that fit over the sleeves. I made up my own spacers but they are kind of hokey and not really thick enough wall tubing and would like to replace with some beefier spacers.

Arrowhead,
You might check out a place called Tab Zone. I made my own but they have some in different thickness that might work for you. I've also seen some at Speedway motors I think.

The spacers came with my custom 4 links from a vendor that is not a sponsor here, since that time another vendor also not
listed here is offering a similar kit but I don't recall IF his (the DR) has similar spacers or not. My spacers have a small shoulder that necks into the Heim
to keep them centered but that also makes the through hole/bolt slightly smaller. I do still need to cut my bump-stops to final height later and I just
noticed how hard they are to see in my pictures because they are all black so they disappear.

You can get Heim spacers, joints and even complete control arms from several different suppliers to the dirt-track racing crowd and the stuff is usually very reasonably priced.
Awesome work as usual Dale, love the mods.

Hi Dale,
Your chassis setup is really turning out nice. Where did you get the limit straps from? Did you make them or buy them off the shelf somewhere?

Thanks
The limit straps are tailgate cables, I think those were from a full size Chevy but it's been a year since I bought them.
They are cheap, strong, plastic coated and have an eye on each end. Tailgate cables come in quite a few lengths for
lots of different trucks, SUV's etc. IIRC they were under $20 each. Well worth it to protect the driveshaft.

On my FFR Challenge car, we removed the two end limit straps from the rear axle as they made for some interesting 'handling' at cornering limits. We then used one of them attached to an unused bolt hole on the pumpkin in the center and welded on a tab on the frame directly above it as the other mounting point. It performed the same function of keeping the pinion from dropping too far and binding up the U-joint. But it didn't affect travel at the axle's end and hence the car wasn't wonky near the adhesion limits.
Best regards, Tom
