View Full Version : Other Door Sill Options

I was doing some searching over at the other forum, and lots of guys recommend the DWC door sills. They look great, but it's now getting towards the end of my build and budget is a bit tighter. I was wondering if other folks had some other options for finishing out the door sills. I was thinking of non-slip tape (heavy duty stuff they use for stairs) to protect the paint, but not sure if that would last very long, and not sure if it would be a bear on the legs.

I'm doing my own custom carpet, and will bind it. The primary goal for the door sills was to give a better finished edge where the under door carpet meets the sill. Maybe that's not even necessary.

Any ideas?

You can use the (free) plastic channel that Factory Five sent you for the door sill and then in the future you can replace it with the DWC door sill if you want. Since you are binding your own carpet you'll be able to have a nice finished edge.

Is that a basic plastic U-Channel? That falls into the category of "holy crap, I remember seeing that, but where the heck is it," parts right now.

UPDATE - I think this qualifies for the Daily Duh Award. I knew that I had seen something at some point in my build, but for the life of me I couldn't find it yesterday when I was looking. Well, checked the top of a shelf that I had a few other little extra parts on...there you have it. That stuff will work just fine, and since I'm doing black paint, it'll probably look pretty good, at least until next Christmas when I can get my wife to buy me the DWC ones. The only downside I see to those is I still probably have to powder coat them black since I don't think normal paint would hold up very well right there.

Thanks for the info!

I did new carpet a couple of moths ago. What I did was very carefully cut the carpet to the shape of the opening. I sewed on the binding and was able to adjust it slightly to make it even more exact. The binding fits exactly at the edge of the fiberglass so overall it looks pretty good w/o any trim. BTW, on my MkI I had the FFR stuff which came loose about every two weeks. Every time it came loose it expanded a little so I squeazed it back. Finally threw it out.

Re the FFR door threshhold, mine came loose also but I just drilled a few holes on the top, not the sides, and riveted into the fiberglass below. It held!
Re carpet binding, I bought InstaBind that looked perfect online, but after many attempts I could not get it right. The product has an adhesive backing that sticks to the back of the carpet and then you use a hot glue gun to adhere the binding to the carpet edge. The online video looks easy, of course, but I could not produce any edge that looked good even after many attempts on scraps.

Yeah, that's what I meant by DWC above. I like those a lot, but at least right now, I'd rather spend the money on something else and come back to it. The stuff that came with the kit should look fine. I'm most likely going with black paint, so you really won't be able to even see them anyway since they are black.
