Hi,

Just finished drilling my Mk III steering DD Shaft at 1/2" per the instructions. After finishing I'm wondering why the plans call for such a large bolt since the hole doesn't leave a lot of material on the sides of the DD tube or the lower shaft?

Thanks,
Lou

Hi Lou,

Are you referring to the older "black" steering shafts that the older MK3's had? If so, that bolt was only used to hold the steering shaft in place, it does not have any steering load on it. The 2 flat sections of the double D shaft are where the steering load is transferred into, the bolt only keeps it from coming off. The 1/2" size is the same one that is used on a older Mustang steering shaft, so we reused that size for that design.

Thank You
