Hi all,

Haven't posted progress in a while. . . completed roadster mock-up (mostly) and got title and tag. Have put about 700 miles on it working out the bugs. No serious issues encountered since mock-up. Made a youtube video if interested at
http://youtu.be/Cgx7A_8N-MU. Thanks for all the help on this forum.

Hi Dale.

Car looks great, even just finished in the gelcoat. That's prolly how I will finish mine too at the beginning.

Hi Dale,
Jeff here in Ocala. Looking at getting a 65 coupe, was wondering how difficult the title/registration process was?
thanks

Was actually pretty easy. I called local Florida DMV and explained that I was building a Factory Five and needed a title and they sent an application in the mail. But, after I received it I went to the DMV website and found the title application in PDF format and filled most of it out online, then printed it. There was a build sheet included in the mailed application that I don't recall seeing on the website. I was rejected once because the build sheet indicated a "repairs" section that I didn't fill out and DMV hand changed the word "repairs" to "build" and sent it back to me for completion. There was also a list of major components that DMV wanted receipts for along with the original manufacturers certificate of origin (MCO). After I made corrections to the build sheet and provided receipts and MCO, DMV in Ocala set up an appointment to bring in the roadster for inspection. I obtained a temp tag from DMV for $7.00 and drove to the appointment. All they "inspected" was the stamped FFR serial number under the dash near the steering wheel, and then issued a title. Cost $1880.00 in sales tax and title fees at the time they issued the title. They issued the title same day as a "1965 Mark IV Roadster" and used the FFR serial number as the VIN. I went to the tag office and received a tag for another $52.00. I got the "antique" tag because the title indicates "1965" and it saved me from having to pay the $250.00 Florida road tax. Classic and antique cars are exempt. Where in Ocala are you?

Also had to provide proof of insurance at the title office.

Replicas, such as the FFR roadster and coupe, do not have to be inspected in FL - DMV doesn't even have to see the car - if they are titled as a replica. See here: http://www.ffcars.com/forums/50-insurance-registration-discussions/175115-easy-steps-title-florida-ffr5310rd-legal.html Follow the instructions and take printed copies with you. As you will see, some offices are more replica friendly than others. When I did mine, the clerk had never titled/registered a replica before, but I was in & out in about 20 minutes with a tag in hand. Titled as a 1965 FFR RD, with "Replica" in the notes box. And although there was a question about FFR being recognized as a manufacturer in FL in the linked thread, they are. Make is "FFR."

Not to argue, but my title reads in "primary brand" block "replica" and "secondary brand" block "kit car". The receipt for the FFR complete kit that I had to provide to satisfy DMV receipt requirements says right there on the FFR sales order/receipt MK IV Complete Kit. And DMV (at least here in Ocala) did require me to bring in the roadster for an "inspection", but again they only verified the serial number stamped on the frame. This was October 31st, 2012. Was still relatively painless and I have a title and tag :).

you said, There was also a list of major components that DMV wanted receipts for, what components were they?

Keep in mind this was Florida DMV. . . Major Component Parts list requiring receipts was: any fender, hood, bumper, cowl assembly, rear quarter panel, trunk lid, door, deck lid, floor pan, engine, frame, transmission, catalytic converter, air bag, rear end. All of the body items were covered in the FFR complete kit invoice, MCO covered the frame. Engine, transmission and rear end were seperate receipts and some of the items I didn't use for the build, so no receipt required. And I did receive a "Vehicle Inspection Notice" from DMV indicating the date and time to bring in the car.

No argument, the difference in requirements you experienced may be due to the "kit car" designation on your title. As FL defines them, FFR roadsters aren't kits, they are replicas. FL describes a replica as a car made with new parts - new body, new frame, etc. - that replicates a car from the past, and a kit as a car that has been altered/rebuilt by putting a new/different body on an old chassis. If you read through the thread I linked, you'll see the most recent post where it was done this way was in mid-October. Nothing really wrong with how you did it, just less to worry about going the replica route. And definitely no inspection going that way, some guys have gotten title & tag while still building the car. The only receipt I needed was the base kit invoice from FFR, no receipts required for the engine, tranny, etc. You didn't say if you needed a weight slip - some have & some haven't. I didn't, the clerk just took the 950 lbs off the FFR MCO. I just smiled & kept quiet.

Yep, you're right. I went back and looked at my title application and I checked "kit car" not knowing any better. The lady at DMV (Alice Smith) put both replica and kit car on the title because I told her it was a 1965 C**** replica when she inspected the car. With the replica designation, it was titled as a 1965 making it eligible for the antique tags. And I did have to submit a certified weight slip (2180 lbs). Sorry for any confusion. . .

Just FYI and not to make things more confusing for you, but some owners have had success in going back to MVA and correcting an error in titling. You're first one I've ever read about having both kit car and replica status in FL. But if you're happy with the way it is, just go with it. Either way, congrats on getting through the process.
