good call. i skimmed right over that. subtract the E from my previous post.

The guys have worked hard to establish a fair and reasonable production date for all of your orders. We are planning to begin production in June 2013 and our production plan calls out for a steady ramp up which will enable us to deliver kits currently on order between June and the following February. Next week, you should receive a hard copy of your order with your PRODUCTION DATE. This production date is an estime and based on our best forcast...but it may change, hopefully for the better!

Welcome to the forum DonChez. Glad you found your way over. I have nothing to add to the conversation except to say Hi. :) Oh, I also believe that it will ship when it is ready. Probably not until then. :)

As an old buddy of mine, a race track manager, used to say, "The schedule of events will not be final until the day after the event is completed." He was always right.

Not to pop anybodies bubble, but I would guess the order will be slightly shuffled to keep the delivery trucks efficient. :p I would guess East, Midwest, South and West will be delivered in lots (W/other FFR products mixed in, but I'm guessing that over 50% of production will be 818 by fall of next year)

^^ That wouldn't make sense. It's a third party vendor that does the shipping and it has minor bearing on FFR making and supplying kits. The email also said most pre orders should be done by Feb of 2014.

Although it is a third-party vendor, it is usually an FFR preferred vendor (Stewart Transportation, IIRC). I'm pretty sure this vendor typically departs the FFR factory with multiple kits in the truck for delivery. It is certainly going to be more cost effective if all kits on the truck are going in the same general direction. And even if it is not their dime, FFR is almost certainly going to do everything possible to keep delivery costs down -- so I suspect that PhyrraM is right. Order of delivery will probably be skewed to satisfy geography. Just my .02.

From my own experience of arranging for kit deliveries I know that to a certain extent they try to coordinate with Stewart. It simply makes sense and benefits both parties by expediting the transporter's load as well as moving the products out of FFR's building as quickly as possible to free up storage space. Although it stays relatively close they do not necessarially build in numerical sequence. For instance, someone recently posted that they were at the factory while their roadster number 79-eighty something rolled off the line and noticed that #8000 was already built, packaged and waiting on the rack to be picked up by the customer or Stewart.

I might have missed it, but I don't think any official list of cars has been put together by number. We on the forum don't know what was sold during SEMA. How do you get car #50?

Still on the fence about delivery myself... Originally I planned on just picking the kit up myself. No need to wait for a shipper, and hopefully setup a nice factory tour while i'm there.

However coming home from work one day and seeing that big beautiful crate in my driveway might be fun as well and would save me a 12 hour trip.

you are correct...nothing is official! somewere it was stated that 129 cars have been pre-ordered. I was just wondering how fast FFR can build & ship these 818 cars. one car every two days? that would seem pretty optimistic? 8 car fit in a 18 wheeler? plus all the other standard stuff they have to do...man they are going to be busy! so, 129 cars/2.5 cars/week= 51.6 weeks. But know one knows! Looks like this 818 is going to be a "out of the park" hit for FFR!

save me a 12 hour trip.

I thought about picking it up, but renting a truck to get it home, flying there, and the drive back to Indy would cost more than the crate and the delivery fee not to mention vacation days and being worn out.

I'm sure one of the IIC guys would lend you a trailer. Hell, I'd even offer to help you drive it back just so I have an excuse to make the pilgrimage to FFR.

Definitely can't drive there and back. I need all my vacation days for Solo Nationals and a potential 2 week trip to Vietnam. I would fly there, get a U haul, and bring it back.

No. Added brackets for clarity. The vietnam comment was in reference to needing vacation days.

IMHO there is nothing like going to Factory Five to pick up the kit. On my roadster I had a work trip up to Rhode Island and rented a budget box truck in Providence and headed out to pack it up. The ride home I was grinning from ear to ear thinking these people have no idea whats in the back of this truck!!!!!

I've thought about flying out to do the pilgrimage to FFR to pick up my 818. Don't know if I could talk the wife to drive 5-6 days in a u-haul though. lets see... hunny how about seeing the USA up close, see the sights , and oh yeah in a u-haul.

How big of a U-Haul truck would you need? Would a 20 ft be big enough?

Scarlett

Don't get your hopes up about finding a big crate in your driveway someday, boys. Unless the kit is going overseas, FFR does not pack a big crate. You'll get the frame with larger aluminum temporarily screwed in place. And boxes of parts. Lots of boxes. Not sure how they will ship the body panels. Most likely the parger pieces will be temp screwed in place and taped down. Smaller panels that can be boxed up may be. The other kit's bodies are easier because they are more or less one big piece that can be fastened to the frame for shipping. Hood, trunk, and doors, etc are taped and/or bolted on to that for shipping.

As far as pick up vs. shipping goes, Someday is absolutely correct. Seeing where you kit came from and how it was built is a great experience. And savoring that all the way hime is priceless. A 20 ft truck would probably be overkill. FFR can provide you with dimension before you reserve a truck, but I'll bet a 14' one would be more than big enough. Smaller truck = less gas. And don't rule out driving a rental to FFR and then back. Depending on how far you have to go, you can sometiems get a "Local" rental truck for a fixed daily charge wihtout paying anythign per mile. That might just make it a good deal fi you only need a day or two. Not sure if I would make the drive from California, though. One way or round trip, it sounds like a long trip. Don't rule out a modest trailer, either. For the 818, especially, how much weight will the kit weigh? No engine, trans, wheels... 1500 lbs? And a good deal of the weight will be in boxes that could go in the tow vehicle as space permits. That is a pretty light duty trailer as long as it is large enough.

I'm expecting the 818 to arrive just like my '33 did. In boxes that contain even more boxes :p!

I think you can get it in a big crate if you want. Just add $700.

I live in Minnesota, so it probably won't be cost effective to go pick it up myself. I just might have to do it anyways, though. I know where I can borrow a trailer for free...................

I know where I can borrow a trailer for free.

Same with me, since I'm in Indiana it's not a horribly long drive though it'll be a long haul. I have a lot longer to wait than you guys though, I'm waiting on the 818C. The plan is to borrow a trailer from a guy at work and make the pilgrimage to FFR with just my oldest son in the cab with me. He's very young but he LOVES cars/trucks so I'm thinking it will make a pretty good father & son project putting it together.

I'm jealous of those of you that live so much closer. Just the cost of gas to drive out there and back would be at LEAST $1200 for me. Probably closer to $1500. Then there are hotels, food, etc. I'm pretty sure having it shipped is by far the more economical option for me. :(

For those of us in Oregon picking up our cars is just a fun thought. I would really enjoy the trip actually. For sure though I'll find a way to make a "business trip/flight" to MA between now and delivery #111:p to see some of your kits being put together.

when I go to long distance autocross events I sleep in the Thule trailer, it is a very nice economy capmer using an air mattress... just go from @Walmart to Walmart... sponge baths ... I do have a cool portable shower too... just a camping trip, use propane camp stoves etc. I even have a catalytic tent heater that does a sweet job. PS my trailer has 1 1/2 extra foam insulation too

I drive a company suv with gas card & have mad amount of hotel points. I'm considering it, but long long trip. It will save me cost of shipping so not ruling out cross country trip with my buddies featherlight trailer? Luckily I need to go to Andover Ma at least once a year anyways, so seeing the factory for sure most likely this spring.
