Looking at the 818R prototype I noticed they've installed a Kirkey Series 47 (http://www.kirkeyracing.com/index.php?link=browse&code=Series47) seat in there. I like it. Fits the R perfect.

I am using the same seats in my S as well. Very comfy for a racing seat.
How are they for a daily driver? I absolutely hate the seats in my 2003 WRX so that's high on my list of things to upgrade.

Not much cushion on those bad boys though... my brother in law had them in his Nova... after an hour I started hurting.
I will most likely be going with a Sparco Evo, or if lady fortune smile on me one of the Status seats.

I plan on OMP TRS seats. The one I tried out for 5 minutes was comfy and they're not terribly expensive at $349 each. FIA homologated too, so it's not some chintzy ebay seat that'll kill you.

I would not use them for a daily driver IMO.

There are many, many (Better/more comfortable IMHO) choices of "Race" seats out there than Kirkey... I personally will stick with Racetech or Recaro with side head "Halo" restraint myself. Possibly even Cobra seats. My buddies race car has a new set that were pretty comfortable.

Interesting. The '02-'03 WRX seats are generally considered on of the best in the Subaru lineup. Folks hate the way they look, but they hold better than any later WRX or STI seat. I always liked mine over the last 10 years.
I wonder if there are many non-racing choices? I would think that a reclining mechanism at least for an 818S.

A local guy (Indianapolis) is selling some Sparco reclining seats with brackets and sliders for a 2006 WRX (basically, any 02-07 impreza) for ~$800 IIRC. I didn't buy them only because there's no hole for a 5th belt on a harness.

Has anyone besides me given any thought to rebuilding/recovering the stock seats? Keeping in mind I'm planning a daily driver, I was thinking about just recovering the stock seats with leather (or a high quality alternative), and possibly altering the padding while I'm at it (i.e. creating a deeper "dish"). I'm going for an exotic car type of look, and want the seats to look the part. Material is more important to this IMO than shape, as long as the seat shape doesn't look like a race car seat!

I sat in a couple Kirkey's at a recent trade show and they were very comfortable. The nice thing is that they are available in different widths which will allow for getting the perfect size. I'd also think that with a size too wide, you could add additional padding under the covers. Kirkey also has additional lumbar support pads.
Just a passing thought, American butt might have problems with Italian or Japanese racing seats. German or British seats might be more to our physical build.
Make sure you try a seat on for fit.

It's funny that you mention these seats. This is the EXACT setup I had in my '08 STI for Time Attack... I had the Suzuka Pro GT for me (HUGE thigh bolsters and I never moved at all) and the Imola Pro GT for the passenger (still good fit, just easier for the passenger to get in and out with the smaller bolsters).

They look great in your car. Interesting choice using a Suzuka/Imola combo. May have to use that.
How did they feel? Related to the GT aka The Husky, what size Levi's waist do you wear? Seat fit tight? Loose? How was the seating angle? Lumbar? Long drives?

I'm 5'8" and around 185 lbs, around a 34". If felt me pretty well. But, it also accommodated some of my friends that are a decent bit larger than me. Lumbar support was mediocre. But I think Sparco or someone else makes lumbar pads that are velcro and are made for racing seats. I think the longest drive I ever made was almost four hours, and it was fine. I was actually surprised that the bolster never showed any wear, even after *somewhat* daily driving it for a few months. I would definitely recommend those seats to anyone who wants a badass set of FIA rated seats.

SEAT SAFETY:
I'd like to know what to look for in a seat as it pertains to how likely you may be to walk away from a wreck.
Obviously, proper fit is crucial. What are the rules of thumb to picking a seat that fits you? I imagine that for some extra change, you can have a seat taylored to your measurements.
Also, different seats are for different applications. You might be able to get away with a deep bucket like the Kirkey 47 on a daily driver, but you obviously wouldn't buy a full restraint seat with a halo as a daily driver.
Apart from the category of seat type, what do you look for?
I would think that a seat made from aluminum would be inherantly safer than one of fiberglass. Is there any merit to that hunch?
Comfort:
What do you look for?
I imagine that you probably want to test sit in any seat you are considering, but it's hard to simulate sitting in something for a long time. I've bought an office chair or two that felt great in the store, but were not so good for a full day.
One of the reasons why I'm thinking that a race seat like the Kirkey 47 would be decent for an 818 daily driver is that it doesn't look like the 818 provides much room for seat recline anyway. If your like me, you'll likely be the only driver of your 818 because your wife refuses to learn stick. Why add pounds with a fully adjustable road seat?
I've heard that these seats are much hotter tahan OEM seats because they don't ventilate. Since aluminum and steel reject heat so well, are metal seats inherantly cooler than composite seats?
Mechie3
12-07-2012, 04:47 PM
Metal conducts better. If the surroundings are colder than the seat it rejects heat faster, if it's hotter it absorbs heat faster. Composites shed heat at a slower rate, but they also absorb it a lower rate making it unlikely for the seat to get hot in the first place.
I'm looking for a seat that is FIA approved. That way I don't worry about whether or not it's safe, I know a legitimate governing body has approved it.

I had the same thought, but then remembered the current situation with my truck: Cleaning. The rear seat doesn't fold down and it's a pain. Having a seat that folds forward makes it a heck of a lot easier to clean behind and around it. Or retrieve something that fell between the seats or behind them.

What Mechie3 said, except I would add that carbon fiber - which I think is a composite - cools down extremely fast.

don't be fooled by brands they all have high end & low end models. I have the momo seats in photo above & they are not comfortable for any long period because they are tube frame design & the foam breaks down along the bars much quicker than centers (these seats are in my x-mod crx I just sold). I run the cobra seat in my miata for track days it is a great seat for the money. Very comfortable great foam & centers are removable for large drivers (yes I share my cars on the track as I will my 818R). I have run the corbeaues before & they have softer foam & also tear easy once they have seen a season of sun. I just got rid of some kirkeys they are way more comfortable than you would think. I also have an older FIA recaro fiberglass seat very flexy p.o.s. I will be running a status icon most likely & they will custom upholster so I'm thinking something waterproof plus they were going to do custom harnesses to match as well when we talked about black & white combo so leaves lots of options.
I do have a question about the Kirkys Do they retain a longer or permanent FIA rating all the composites have a limited amount of time considered safe regardless of weather they have been exposed to sun etc..

Brand spanking new, and manufactured by "Cobra seats" in the UK. One still sealed in it's bag. The other just unpacked to "try on". Perfect solution for a street driven 818. Hard to see in the pic, but that's a F5 logo at the top.
I had a Cobra Suzuka in my last race car and absolutely loved it. I will be using the Evolution in my 818R:
http://www.cobraseats.com/App_Images/msimg/evolutionpro_seat.gif
I don't think the evolution would really be suitable for the street, though, due to the reduced side visibility.

My dad and I are building the 818S together, so I'd like to find a seat that will be comfortable but supportive for both he and I to drive. He's 6'2" and about 260, I'm 6'3" and about 225. So I think most true bucket seats even the Sparco "XL" seats are out of the question for my dad, but I just don't think the stock WRX seats will look good in there, just my opinion though.
Anyone have any ideas for a supportive good looking seat for a 6'2" 260lb man?

My plan is to re-upholster the stock seats in leather. This probably won't cost less than some of the racing seats, but should provide the look I'm going for along with adequate bolstering for a daily driver. Nearly all of those race seats I've seen look too deep to get in and out of comfortably on a daily basis.

My plan is to see how the stock seats feel... I also plan on re doing them in leather if I find them satisfactory. I'll add seat heaters too! I bought my BMW leather covers from www.leatherseats.com they are awesome and they can do multiple colors and logos...
I have Cerullo SC seats in my electric reverse trike. They are very nice, well made seats, I'm not sure about the fabric though long term... I'm not sure why you feel that they won't work in an 818 Vman7, they are as low as the others and my rails raise them only about 1 inch above the floor (rails from Cerullo) I also have their inflatable lumbar supports, a great option.

I saw the link for the yardage, just leather and vinyl, no fabric. Sure you can get it though, just probably have to call them.
RM, sounds like your trike around the sametime I was doing my Toyota 4x4. I got my seats through Northwest Off-Road Speacilities in Bellingham, WA, when I was stationed at NAS Whidbey IS. They had the seats at the store and all the fabric and vinyl option samples.
I love Cerullo seats because you can custom order the fabric, and they are not super expensive. Where a lot of the other manufacturers you are limited on your choices of fabric.

I've got some Recaro seats I will be putting in my Honda Civic daily driver, but I may just try putting them in the 818 to see how they look and fit. If decent enough, I'll just pick up some bottom mount low Recaro rails meant for a WRX and use them.
These are my seats, paid less than $200 for the pair, they came from a Mitsubishi Evolution IV. The center fabric pattern is *meh* so I might change it and might not, depending on what color I go for with the 818.
Not sure how well the side bolsters will hold up to my dad though. :)

I'm just wondering if these Recaro SR3 are going to be too "retro" for a modern car such as our 818. The SR3 is a 20yr old design after all. Maybe the SR7 or even Evo IX seats would be a little more appropriate while still remaining subtle looking.

Sure!
I don't have any pics of the actual disaster, but here is a pic from the setup

The foam managed to miss the center of my head so I decided to roll with a mohawk for about a month. I have one more of when they are actually shaving my head, but it includes a NSFW gesture so I decided not to post that one.

It's interesting that there isn't a width adjustable seat made, it can't be that hard to do. Hey there is a million dollar idea!

wouldn't it be cheaper to buy new seats?

I made poured foam seats for my fmod. Rather comfortable but zero ability to move which is rather the point. I'm never in the car for more than 20 minutes at a time so I'm not sure how a road trip would feel in such a seat.

Some of the track day photos in the gallery suggest spinal compression could occur in an accident. i mean the shoulder strap mounts are too low for a big fella. On one hand I'm sure FFR is looking at it, on the other hand I wouldn't buy a seat till I knew the height of the seat's shoulder strap slots weren't super important...

Ouch,
I have managed to get epoxy and foam on my hands many times (it off eventually) but never my head.
After your hair grew back were you pleased with the results?
Cheers!

Actually we ended up making a mold and laying carbon over it instead of running the foam seat. It was lighter and stiffer for our setup as we weren't running a carbon tub but a tube frame chassis.

Thanks for sharing SkiRideDrive
My 04 WRX seats are really clean but because of my 6 foot frame, I will probably need to do something else to fit the 818 leg room wise. My test fit in the 818R was comfortable, however that was not a long duration butt test. The 818R being tested by FFR has Wilwood pedals installed which might also help with foot room.
Cheers!

I will not be using these fiberglass shell seats after all. They are much lighter than regular seats. I have about $600 in them, including the seat bases.
If anybody is interested I would consider selling them. PM me if you want more information.

I have the Corbeau Forza seats in my turbo S10. For as light weight as they are, they are pretty nice. I've done several 16 hour trips between WI and NY in them. Great for a car that doesn't need reclining seats. The only issue I have had with them is the fitment on the body adapter mount was horrible.
They aren't available in leather, but you can get vinyl and mircosuede
I got mine from soloracer.com. Still got free shipping if you order a pair of them.

Surprised to not see these mentioned here. Although considering location and cost. Maybe not.
Still, super sexy and super light!

I'm getting closer to having to make a choice so deep into research mode now. Two questions.
1. Anybody thinking about the GTM seats, I only sat in them in the Red car at Huntington Beach so I know they fit, but no idea how they would be for a long drive.
2. What options are there for seat heaters. I would definitely like to add them, but haven't done research yet on what the options are on top of the seat options here.

I originally considered them; my only experience is the same as yours... the few minutes I sat in them at HB. However, I can say for sure, the NRG seats I got are much more comfortable. From the few minutes I sat in the GTM seats, I don't think I would want to spend a long time in them without adding some viscoelestic (i.e. memory) foam to them; I felt pressure points pretty quick.

I bought these seat heaters from Amazon:

Haven't installed them yet, but should be easy. They got good reviews, and the price was decent.

personally, I think that aluminum seats are as ugly and ghetto as they come... but that's just what I think. Ime building an R road racing race car, so it will have to be a real road racing seat like momo, Sparco, etc..
I see a couple issues for the R. Because of the roll cage bar, you will have to climb on the seat to get in the car, which kind of sucks as far as keeping it clean especially since if will also be a street legal car. Some of those seats have a vinyl option but I'm not sure how it would work as far as sliding around vs the cloth material they use in race seats. Anybody has experience with that in full racing conditions? Bimarco seats on ebay are FIA seats and super cheap. They have lots of options about embroidery, material, etc... I know somebody here has bought them but don't really have feedback on those. It could be an option. Because I'm a fat ***, the only seat that come in wider dimension is an non FIA rated seat.
I had Corbeau seats in my previous race car, and I really liked them.
