Well I was out in the garage all day Sunday to get cleaned up for the eventual arrival (figured about 9 months was fitting for bringing home my new baby)
made a short list of things that needed to be done:
add an additional 8ft light
degrease floor, install new tiles.
new bottom and side seals for garage door.
buy a new welding machine
restock beverage fridge
once it's all finished i'll post some pictures.
anyone else making any preperations for their new toys?

My wife has one condition that must be met before I order my kit. I have to clean out my basement / workshop. It is a complete disaster right now and will probably take me at least a year. I've already talked to a good friend of mine and have asked him if I can borrow his tandem axle dump trailer for an extended period of time. That won't even put a dent in how much crap I have to throw out.

You only have 9 months... You better get on it!! LOL

Sounds like a VERY smart wife!! :) (mine made a similar demand)

My wife was very understanding about the entire project. I don't have to clean out the garage, only because it isn't big enough for our dd AND a project car. To solve this problem, she's agreed to move to a house with a 3-car garage so that I have room for this and other projects! The only caveat is that the kids must stay in the same school.
My wife is Soooo cool!!

It will be a great motivator for both you and the rest of us here!

Always a good plan. I see too many people on the local Subaru forum that own 20% of their car, spent $$$ on mods, breake something, and can't afford to fix it.
I still have some debt (well...my wife, they're her school loans;) ) but it's being tackled quite handily already. The only reason I'm able to do the 818 now (paying cash that is) is insurance gave me a handsome price for my wrecked 06 DD and that car had been paid off for more than 4 years.

It's a bit off topic, and I don't want to start a diatribe, but I do want to say debt free is a good way to roll. Try it an you'll likely never go back into debt... (you'll also have more money!)

Yep. Cobra left yesterday along with 5 years of accumulation. I actually parked my car in the garage!
Next to go is the trailer, then the tow vehicle. Along with a 1999 Seadoo Challenger 1800.
I plan on getting a more stout tow vehicle than the Sport Trac, and an enclosed low profile trailer.

Very nice. Watch for sales on the cabinets, especially during the holidays. I'm looking to get 2 ~24" wall cabinets as well and some new shelves. I would love some full length cabinets but they are just so damn pricey.

If you already have a coating on your floor (most concrete comes with a generic sealer) it must be ground off first with a diamond grinder. The regular stone grinders get gunked up and don't work. I couldn't find a reasonable cost to rent one, so at the suggestion of the garage forum I bought a 4.5" diamond cup for an angle grinder and went to town. 40 hours later I was done. It sucked. lol. On the bright side, my rustoleum epoxy floor has lasted over 3 years with only 2 spots that got damaged from some heavy dropping. My friends who only etched and epoxied had it peeling within a year.

You might have just missed a great sale. Picked up a 30" Gearbox wall unit for $100 at sears. Normally around $190, best price I've ever seen (and paid for my other 2) was $130. Also got some tall floor units for $250 each normally around $300ish (craftsman professional). The regular craftsman was $200. The gearbox floor units were $300 and up!!
Hmm..just looked it up. The floor units are still on sale for $250:

The Gladiator wall Gearbox is back up to $150. I already have 2 of these and love them enough to get a third.

It's ironic that your mispelling takes a man cave with girls on the wall to a man cave with "attractive and fashionable" pictures. Maybe he's putting up ads from the latest Cosmo mag?

Mechie, I did see those Gladiator cabs on Sears black friday ad.. thought about it but held off. how do you like them?
I did pick up another 40" toolbox for a song. The craftsman floor cabinets are still on sale for $209.... thinking about it, want to make sure they are not too flimsy. for $40 more the Pro's might be worth it.

I went pro. They had overall better reviews. Main complaint was dents from shipping. I plan to open the boxes in the store before carting them home. I got one of each style of the pro. One is all horizontal shelves, the other is half horizontal shelves and half a vertical space for taller items. The pro also has storage area on the inside of the door.
I love the wall boxes. I have one for fluids of all types (The narrow gallon sized oil containers fit nicely side by side) and one for random stuff.

Do you know of a way to test for sealer? I've been at this place forever.... one owner before me & he built the place, I'm guessing before modern sealers were available.
40 hours later I was done.
If I need to do that to get the floor the floor paint is out... I would never finish it, my knees would give out after the first two hours... not to mention the dust.
There are two versions of Rustolium.. Do you know if the Pro version holds up better, sticks better? If it lasts only one year .. I'll pick another choice. PVC roll is a bit pricey at $2.60 / ft + shipping.... but it would be better than doing all that work and havig it peal up.
You might have just missed a great sale.
I hate when that happens... (always does).
I was looking at Home Depot , Lowes, Baldhead, .. et. al. not Sears thanks. As most of what I would pick is not on sale, it would still be about the same price, .. But I have time... I'll need to watch the sales. Thanks for the links.

the POR system is great as well and comes with clearcoat. the deluxe kit is all inclusive and large enough for many coats but you still need to start with a clean surface.

Put water on it. If it beads up, it has a sealer. Also, you should be able to see rock in the concrete. Sealant is a random gray color usually.
Mine after grinder, before epoxy:

If I could do it again, I'd rent a large diamond grinder. They just weren't available in my area cheaply. After doing it for 40 hours, it would have been worth it. I sat on a 5 gallon bucket the whole time I did it.

No idea. I do know that prep is key for any brand. Even the expensive brand the garage journal forum people like doesn't stick on top of existing sealant.

I didn't do the clear, but wish I had. The flakes (I used a LOT of flakes) tend to catch dirt. Instead of being bright blue, black, white, and gray, they all kind look dingy black ish. Using a brush and Tide laundry detergent with a stiff brush cleans it up well, but is time consuming. In my time lapse video of the WRX tear down you can see me clean it at the end.
Here's my garage transformation. I'd still like to move some junk out of there, but overall it's a huge improvement. BTW, the lift is an Atlas Kwick Bay 7000. If you want a nice mid-rise lift and have limited garage space, I highly recommend one.

Thanks.. I looked it up.. Must be good at $719.25 for a 2.5 car garage. If you don't need to grind it may be worth it... but the risk is applying the system and then finding out later you needed to grind .. that would really be the pits.

Make sure it has diamond discs. I rented one from sunbelt that wasn't diamond and it was a waste. At the time they didn't have one. Now it shows that they do, and for $97/day.

GUNS: is that the 8 ft shelf that Costco sells? if so how do you like it?
I got my shelf at Lowes, but I'm sure it's probably similar if not the same as the one Costco sells. I'm overall pretty happy with it. It was very easy to put together and seems to be pretty sturdy. The shelving that is comes with is flimsy wire mesh so I brought the original shelves to Lowes and had them cut 1/4 in plywood which is much better.
Here is a link to the site that sells the lift: http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/Atlas-Kwik-Bay-7-000-LB-Mid-Rise-Lift
I was originally looking at a MaxJax, but it would not work in my garage. I stumbled across the Kwik Bay and I'm glad I did. Install was simple and operation is easy. I also love that it stays in place and I don't have to worry about having posts in the way, but at the same time it is "somewhat" mobile if you need it to be.

Well, (as number 1 or 129 like everyone else), I spent the last 7 months lurking, occasionally posting, going to the Open House and building my shop. 600 sq ft (the most I am zoned for) 10 ft ceiling (same), 100 Amps of power with 220 for the compressor and welder, heat, insulated. Going to pick up the Max Jax from GES on Monday, finished hanging the rock 2 days ago, mud and tape next week. Going with either POR 15 floor with clear or UCoat it. 6" thick new floor, never parked in it so etching should do it. A fun run up to the 818, and a 25 year dream.

Just a point of order on the concrete sealing--I would venture that most residential garages do not have any sort of sealer applied unless a former resident went to the trouble. The original slab may have had a curing compound applied but those wear off if they're not the dissipating type.
That doesn't mean that good prep work won't make a difference to your new sealer. The power troweling finish on the original slab, or just a well-troweled finish, will leave a smooth, dense, and not very porous layer of mostly cement on the face of the slab, and sealers don't have a great way to bond. By grinding, you're creating both surface roughness (though small amplitude) and taking off the sealed top layer so that pores and aggregate (which also has pores) are exposed. This allows the sealer to penetrate and bond.

I just bought my first house this spring with an oversized attached two car garage. I just finished doing the walls and because of the cold temps in Boston I have to wait into summer time to paint the floor. Once I complete it I will post pictures of it. I plan to have a "show room" garage finished in the next year.
I plan to purchase an 818 (coupe) in about two years. I am holding out for the Coupe to be a daily driver and also the Ford Eco boost engine.

No offense Long Island, but that's nothing! You should have seen my garage after I let my two sons have unfettered access to it for two years. Talk about an explosion of tools, boxes, parts, and other crap, it looked really, really bad!

That's what I did with mine. I've seen pictures of awesome garages and always wanted it when I got my first house. Everyone that comes over and sees the garage says "whoa.....nice!". A few people at work have asked to see pictures and they never believe it's really my house since they think it belongs on a million dollar mansion (which....i dont have, lol). The white painted walls reflect light well (as does the lighter colored floor) and it makes it look much bigger. I've since painted the stairs black on top and blue on the sides.
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q291/mechie3/GarageTop.jpg
Here are my gearboxes. I have a third I haven't hung up yet, and my tall cabinets haven't arrived yet. Need to do some reorganizing. I have to keep my trailer and Fmod inside the garage, so that takes up a lot of space and makes access to certain areas of the garage difficult. Almost everything is on wheels to make cleaning and moving stuff easy. Maybe I should break down and get a storage garage, but I hate to spend $360+ just to have a more convenient garage.

Personally- Don't make the mistake I did in regards to getting floor tile like Racedeck. I had an Epoxy floor before, moved to a new house and then put Racedeck down. Worst mistake of my life. The stuff never stays clean, and is VERY hard to clean unlike epoxy. I'm about ready to remove the tile and paint the floor with epoxy. The tiles are so damn annoying.

I like it. Stays out of the way, decent suction power, comes off the wall easily, long extension cord.
Good to know about the racedeck panels too. I thought of doing those if I ever move and have to do my garage all over again.
