View Full Version : Got the Coyote control package today, got a few questions for those that have theirs

Pictures tomorrow. A few questions for now:
What's the red wire that originates inside the power distribution box and ends with a ring terminal?
How much do you anticipate cutting off the gas pedal arm?
How do you intend to re-mount the MAF sensor since it's in that huge airbox that won't fit anywhere?
David Borden suggested a couple of spots for mounting the PCM. One spot is in the firewall, another under the 3/4 tube in front of the footbox. Any other suggestions?

Im getting my Coyote in May and I have the same questions. I know that there is a fix for the headers and the oil pan, but what about the pedal and the MAF question is one I didnt know about.

If the MAF is like the Three Valve kit you can unbolt it from the big Ford Racing filter housing. On our Mustang project I am just using the inlet hose, MAF housing, and filter element.
Can provide pics when I get home tomorrow.

Mark no such luck. The sensor mounts directly into a plastic tube that's part of the box. Wayne is going to fix me up with a short tube that has the mounting plate. I don't want to cut up the box or duct because it's a good crash replacement part. Around here, Mustang GTs have a very short window before somebody drives the nose into an immovable object. 2011's are just starting to show up, so I'll be ready with the air box and a set of headers....

So the 5.0 Coyote kit comes with the production airbox? Interesting. The Three-Valve kit comes with a Ford Racing cold air assembly and you can just unbolt the MAF tube from the big housing, even cut the bolt hole ears off if you want to streamline it more.
Several companies make the tubes you can slip the cartridge style MAF into, but it might require a slight retune depending upon your final induction inlet length and routing.
BTW, the red wire with the ring on it should go directly to battery positive IIRC from the print directions...

There you go telling me to read the directions again....
Wayne is helping me to get what I need to avoid a retune, hopefully. This is all voodoo to me, since I grew up trying to get Carter AFB carbs to not leak.

I see via Google image search that the Coyote kit comes with the production "Cold Air Induction" factory filter box and MAF tube. Definitely harder to fit that in a classic car or one of these replicas. Our Three-Valve kit came with a true cold air kit from Ford Racing and the MAF tube can be removed from the big honkin S-197 Mustang plastic mount/housing.
Our plan is to simply cut the mounting ears off of the MAF tube and angle it down with the filter bolted right to it like in this photo of a '64 1/2 Mustang coupe that the Mustang Shop did:

As long as the inlet tube, MAF tube, and filter are used without changing length FRPP's engineers told me no tuning would be needed.
Good luck with your induction setup Joe!

Mark, sounds like a piece of cake until you see the damn thing. It's huge, the flex pieces are bonded directly to the PVC, so there's no disassembly, and the tube where the MAF goes has these big, ugly, wart-looking bubbles that are apparently for noise control. Better to keep it intact for resale and invent a whole new intake.

Those "warts" are to reduce induction noise...
I've seen the production induction stuff, just wasn't aware FRPP was providing that in the Control Pack until I did some image searching. Bummer...

You gotta know there is going to be lots of aftermarket stuff out for this engine soon.

I have a 35 degree 3-1/2 inch aluminum elbow on its way from Spectre. My plan is to weld on a boss the elbow on the passanger side that will accept the MAF sensor. On the drivers side I'm going to weld on a male connector to accept the factory breather hose. The elbow will go right into a conical filter to finish it off.
I will post some pictures as soon as I get it fabricated.

I'm not familiar with this set up, but I am with the GM system and the MAF has to be located 10" from the throttle body to get a correct flow reading. Better measure what distance Ford has in the stock setup they sent you and mount accordingly and then a re tune should not be needed.

There's lots of stuff out for this engine ALREADY!

There may be lots of parts out, but the tuning is what's complicated. This is one of the most sophisticated PCMs yet from Ford. There's a LOT of things to look at in this computer...

Wondering if you mounted the throttle pedal and what pedal box you're using (wilwood, fox, sn95).
