I recently purchased a MK3 and was told it has a 15 gallon tank. I've filled it with a little over 12 gallons when the gauge read a bit less than 1/4 full. So that computes, assuming the gauge is correct and the tank holds 15. I've toyed with the idea of running it dry while carrying a couple of gallons in a can in the trunk to test it.

Depends on which tank you have. If it's an 87-93 donor tank, it's 15.4 gallons. The Fuel Safe SA-110A 22 gallon fuel cell holds about 18 gallons. Not sure about the newer fuel cells, but I think it's about the same.
You can also install a stock fuel tank from Crown Vic, which holds 20 or 22 gallons.
There are some aftermarket tanks that hold more or less. So, you just need to crawl under there and see what you have.

What do I look for to know which tank I have? Do I need to pull the tank?

The stock tank is pretty obvious. Usually installed with a black plastic cover.
The Fuel Safe sell is black, with welded squared off corners and edges. It does not have a plastic cover.
The Crown Vic tank looks stock, hangs down just a little further than a Mustang tank. It also does not use a plastic cover. Although I don't see why you couldn't use one if you wanted to.

I guess my tank is the stock tank. Hangs down a little bit and has a plastic cover under it. Thanks for the info.

I couldn't tell you exactly which Crown Vic. Do a search on the other forum, and I'll bet you'll find it.

i hardly ever watch the gallons going in i just watch the sale price for 93 octane i do believe i dumped in about 16 gallons mine is the MK3.1 complete kit i always top off the tank when i get just past 1/2 tank because the MPG changes so much when you stomp on it, i am lucky to get 11 mpg on the highway maybe 8 or 9 around town.

You are not kidding. That's what I do as well. I bought the complete kit as well so my tank was the tank which came with the kit (MKIII).
Thanks everyone for your answers.
