We can't get Herculiner in the UK. I think exactly the same product though, is called protecta-kote.

http://www.protectakote.co.uk/kits.htm

Any idea how much I need to do the underside of the body and hood? Do I need more than one coat everywhere? Do I need to do more coats in the wheel wells only?

Any help appreciated.

135891359013591I bought one US-gallon and was able to get two or three coats over the entire body and four coats in the fenders. There was a pint or so left in the can when I was done. The liner seals the raw fibreglass from the elements and also helps to prevent "stars" from showing up if you have a rock/stone impact on the underside of the body. Due to the road conditions were we used to live (the central valley of California) I also bought a set of fenders liners from a vendor. You should be okay with the roll-on liner unless you drive around a stone quarry.

Hope this helps....

thanks Ray. That definitely helps.

I'm off to figure out how many litres are in a US gallon. :D

For sure, undercoat the body with at least one coat everywhere and several coats in the wheel wells. But personally, I would think twice about doing the underside of the hood. It's a two-piece lamination, so the underside of the exterior panel isn't exposed. Plus it's a big appearance item when the hood is open. Much better to paint it and finish similar to the exterior. Same comment for the trunk lid, BTW. My Mk3 shortly after it was completed:

I'm probably in the vast minority here, but I wish I'd never bedlined my body - it's a great idea, until you need to work on it (e.g., grafting stuff in). Grrrrr.

My RCRs have corematt glassed in above the tires so stars arn't a concern, but what I did, which I would do if I were to build another cobra, was to have splash shields infront and behind the tires (as in the cobra). Then, above the tire, rather than bedline the whole body glass a sheet made up of 2layers of 6oz fiberglass cloth, put 3 coats of bedliner on that, then attach it to the area above the tire with double sided tape. Easy peasy - it will absorb most rock hits and those that get through will be muted in impact. Bedliner w/o the hassle of having to potentially remove it down the road :D
