I picked up my MkII in June of 2004. One of the last MkIIs. THe MkIIIs were already out. It took almost exactly 8 years to complete but with the help of a lot of people on the forum it is done. I’d also like to thank my good friend & co-builder Dave as well as my wife Tracy & kids Connor & Shelby. She is now complete.
Drive Train:
-Ford 342ci crate motor.
-SDS fuel injection.
-T5 transmission
-13” Baer brakes all around.
-Coil over 4 link.
-8.8” rear with Detroit Tru Trac 3:55 gears.
I had it run on the dyno to tune it. Matthew said 424 hp & 396 ft-lbs at the flywheel. All I know is that I have scared the hell out of myself twice!
Other than sanding the ridges off the body, I didn’t do too much aside from mounting it to the frame. Ken Pike at Ken’s Custom Auto Body did all the rest. Shot with Indigo Ink Pearl, one large Wimbledon White stripe & two Chrome Yellow teams stripes. When I walked into Ken’s to see it for the first time I was ecstatic! I thought it was the best looking Cobra I’d ever seen. Very pleased with it!
We made quite a few mods to the car. The passenger side foot well has been dropped, much like the MkIII was. The steering shaft still comes through the side of the foot well but now has a polished aluminum tube over it. We built a good size compartment in the trunk that holds a set of tools, duct tape & a small assortment of fuses.
The fuse box is hinged under the dash right over the transmission tunnel along with a couple of 12V ports. Directly underneath that, is a hard mount for my Nikon SLR. I didn’t want my D700 sitting on the floor & it won’t fit behind the seats.
The switches for the hazard lights & windshield wiper are under the dash to the left of the wheel. I may move the wiper switch onto the dash. I used the AAW wire harness & headlight switch as well as a Digital Dawg push button start. Both have been modified to fit into 1965 Ford bezels. Gauges are FFR. The clock runs fast.
There were a lot of people on the forum that have helped. Rod (DVDT) in Ottawa for advice & a cruise one evening. Mark Houlahan is like a walking encyclopedia. His build in Mustangs & Fords magazine was informative every month & he has helped with many Mustang issues as well.
Most vendors were good to deal with. Breeze, Tangent, Replica Parts, FF Metal, **********, Herb's Custom Door Panels and more. Some people would even ship parts before I had paid.
From the beginning of June this year I have put the better part of 9000 miles on it. The first road trip was from Calgary to California & back. The next from Calgary to Chicago, Route 66 to Santa Monica & then eventually home. I got to check off a bucket list item there!!!!! My wife Tracy did a Track-My-Tour blog on it. It is similar to the one Magnus did on his adventure. Not quite as in depth. I hope the link works.

Most of the miles have been smooth sailing. Half way to California the car started running like crap. It turned out to be the PIP in the MSD distributor. That got replaced with a NOS Ford unit.
I got caught in two downpours. Going through Oklahoma City the driver’s side wiper stopped working while on the interstate. There was a post a few weeks ago on replacing them with marine units. That will be a future mod. The carpet is ruined.
The side pipes have gotten way louder than when they were new. My next set will be quieter.
A big THANK YOU to Dave Smith & everyone at Factory Five. You have made it possible for me to realize one of my dreams. I hope to bring it home to the FFR shop one day for a visit.
