View Full Version : What do you guys think of this computer mount?

(This is cross posted from my build thread but wanted some input on how I mounted the computer for my Coyote in the Mk4)

I finally decided where I am going to mount the computer. I was going to splice the harness and mount it under the passenger footbox, but decided to leave it intact and mount it just in front of the passenger footbox on the .75" tube. With AC and all the other wiring under the dash it would have been really tight and hard to service if needed.

At first I was concerned about heat, but was recently told the computer was designed to be mounted in an engine bay. It is over the header area, but in reality, its not even close distance wise. I could easily make a simple shield if I had to.

This location keeps the harness way up high and out of site and allows for great routing along the top of the 2x2 dash tubing over to the drivers footbox.

Let me know what you think.

Similar to where I mounted it in the Coyote car I built. 13369

Looks great! Not sure I could get my computer back that far. Are the newer harnesses longer there?

I do know the crate motor harnesses are quite longer than the harness from a donor car. My harness (2012 donor) is stretched just getting it here:

Not sure David , this car was completed in the spring of 2012... This photo was taken probably in February of this year.... Not sure how long you have had your control pack.

The harness was not extended.

That looks great!!good place to hide it.

Thanks guys... Im just wondering about the harness as I got one of the first kits from Ford through FFR. It was the hotrod harness as far as I know, but not sure if its just a modified mustang harness and they made a change later in production. Anybody have the email for the Ford tech guys? Id like to ask about it.

I have attached some photos of my computer mount/install. I have installed the stock harness that comes with the computer for the Crate motor. No mods required to O2 sensor wires etc.

I have also installed the speed sensor pins and module. Service and or a tune is done through the ODB port. If I need to service I can remove the elephant ear for access.

This mount should minimuze vibration, moisture and134331343413435134361343713438 heat.

Thanks Jester. Nice looking box you made there. Im familiar with the large harness that needs to go across by the oil fill, not the other two in your last picture. Can you tell me what the other wire bundles are for?

The smaller wire bundles contain the O2 sensor wires and the Mass Air wires. I have run both of the O2 sensor wires along this path with one going directly down to the PS J-Pipe and one crossing the top (front) of the engine then down to the DS J-Pipe (I wrapped both in high heat insulation tape) – this setups seems to works best for my install (no O2 extensions required). In addition the Mass Air harness wires cross the top (front) of the engine (same as DS O2 sensor wire) etc.

Hope this helps

Jester, I am doing a hybrid of your and David's computer placement and have a question about the O2 sensor wires. You mention that you ran them to the front of the engine for both the passenger and drivers side without any need to lengthen them. I have my Controls Pack crate engine harness mocked up and with the run to the gas pedal stretched out the out of the box O2 runs come out of the main bundle right at the firewall gromet between the dash and engine bay. Much to short to get them both to the front of the engine... My question is did you unbundle the harness to lead them that far forward?

Thanks
Kevin

I'm wondering if Ford changed O2 lengths in their controls pack at some point. Mine wasn't even close to getting anywhere. I ordered extensions from Casper if you want to do the same. You can use my order if you need to:

My invoice is #64644

12" extension (pass side) - $8.25
36" extension(drivers side) - $8.25
S&H - $12.95

Total - $29.45

I ordered on 11.05.12

Thanks for the info. I figured that I would go that route. Until I saw Jester's post I was going down the path of running the O2 sensor harness across the back of the engine under the plastic engine cover then running extensions to the headers. I like the idea of running them to the front of the engine better, but if its a major harness surgery to remove all the loom and modify the O2 run I may just call it a day and stick with my current plan.

This was not major surgery on the harness. I just had to remove the harness wrap as per the FFR installation instructions and re-wrap. That was enough to route the O2 wires as per my install. I believe it is important to have the ECU close to the front though to allow the O2 sensor to properly fit on the drivers side.

Extensions are the other option if you do not want to deal with the slight modification to the harness (unwrapping then re-warping).

Good luck

I was scared to death to modify the Ford harness at all, including unwrapping the harness to get more room for the drivers side O2 sensor... however, I can assure you that it was not anything to be scared about at all. Simple is...as simple does.

Thanks for the advice of it not being a big deal... I am going to unwrap it tonight and move the O2 run as far forward as possible. While I'm at it I will re-route the cooling fan orange wire the opposite direction to the firewall as I am going to tap it into the Ron Francis harness per the FFR instructions (i.e. thier 'double' relay approach where the Coyote orange cooling fan wire becomes the relay trigger wire to the Ron Francis cooling fan circuit).

Almost there! Probably a month to first start... Just need to order the transmission.

I went with the TKO 600 as per the FFR parts list including clutch, fly wheel etc. Very strong trans and easily handles the power. Very nice 5th gear and the noise from the pipes becomes a none issue at 60mi per hr, at approx 1600 rpm.

TKO takes some break in and is very stiff shifting at first.

I have approx 500 mi on my Mk4 and I am very pleased that I went with the Coyote. Very predictable and around town just use a higher gear to bring the DB down. Many compliments on the sound and the looks.

I am planning the TKO 600 as well. I have an IRS with 3.55's which seems like a very good combination. Starting to get excited about the first start - just over the horizon.
