If you do not wish to be named please PM me and I will add data w/ no name.... and updtate table
If other data is needed please advise.

Great Idea.
I would suggest adding:
*Engine Start
*Include the State of the Insurance Auction facility
*Primary area/type of damage (if it’s an auction buy)
*If not an Insurance Auction sale then "personal or dealership buy"
*Actual Auction ending price.
*Title Type.
The addition of the above data should give anyone searching a solid reference.

I may be wrong, but I included the owner's name as it shows in the posts I pulled the data from.. someone looking for photos could search on the name(s). I will try that and if it works, I will add it to the post the next time I go in to edit the chart.

Paid $16650
Miles: $64k
WRX: Yes, 06
Transaction Cost: $0
Purchased from: Used car dealer because I needed a new DD, and I was going to kill two birds with one stone. Also waiting on the coupe to come out and for me to finish college. So I have plenty of time to troll and plan my build accordingly. Also this is my fist Subaru so I wanted to learn about the car before I rip it apart. I might just buy a wrecked one if I cant bare to rip this one apart. :D

format question
shouldn't the column that is filled/final for all cars be the cost inc. shipping if any... they all have a "total" cost... mine just happened to have 1/2 of the cost be in transaction and shipping fees.
It gets really complicated when you add what "needs" to be done to have all the parts for your 818... :-) my donor had to have replaced: the driver's LCA, the steering rack, two lower rear lateral links, and mirrors to be a "complete" donor kit. Since I had a 70k donor I could have installed the parts "as is" but chose not to, to upgrade and refresh... I've still recovered almost $1000 from my donor and can forsee at least $600 more from unwanted parts. I'm adding over $2500 in refreshed parts & upgraded parts that did not need to be done inc. the LSD... only remaining donor expenses are a nice steering wheel and the LSD install.
Makes it hard to really compare donors. Looks like rori got a pretty nice deal on an NA donor as long as the damage doesn't include parts we need.
I think that many will prove that 5K donor and 10K kit could indeed be accomplished tho most of us will do more!

You will be much better off financially to buy a true donor. The other option is to get lucky like me, have a lady total your car while unaffecting most of the parts you still need and buy it back from insurance.
Donor parts ruined: Radiator, timing belt cover, front seat belts (1 time use only in an accident).
07FIREBLADE
11-07-2012, 02:25 PM
I know that financially speaking buying a true donor will be best but it came time to get a new car and what better could i do then get a future car that I could re-purpose later on when needed. I am also not looking to buy a kit until the coupe comes out or a few years after college so that would give me time to get another DD while this one goes the way of the dodo bird. Also who said that the car my not get in an accident later on down the road..... :P

the 818 donor list is for the rear seat belts, not the fronts! lucky you.
Mechie3
11-07-2012, 04:02 PM
It used to say rear, now it says front. I plan on 5 pt harnesses anyways. My guess is they realized the rear seats have to mount the spool at shoulder height where the front can hide the spool down low.
RM1SepEx
11-07-2012, 04:07 PM
my bad, just noticed that too... I'm with you re harnesses... I have a damaged drivers belt too, it was cut by emergency services after the roll over.

I was hoping people would offer cost of donor, transaction cost, and cost of transportation,.. and delivery time once they saw the chart... most post did not contain that information and I did not want to PM all with reques for more data... So I filled in what I could.
It gets really complicated when you add what "needs" to be done to have all the parts for your 818... :-)
As you say, it really gets complicated. My goal was to be helpful.. not to find a new job ...:-) .. When you see what is offered on Copart and the variation in damage, I see no opportunity to keep it spimple.
my donor had to have replaced: the driver's LCA, the steering rack, two lower rear lateral links, and mirrors to be a "complete" donor kit. Since I had a 70k donor I could have installed the parts "as is" but chose not to, to upgrade and refresh... If you wish to add N # of columns, PM your e-mail & could e-mail you the file.
Makes it hard to really compare donors.
Agreed.

I think what matters is overall delivered cost and what else you may need due to damage with the other end of that is what you can salvage/sell off.
It realistically looks like if I took that approach my replacement parts cost me about $300 beyond the $3500 for the donor add the replacement wheel and tire for $250 more to use the existing Dunlops. Then with the $1500-1600 I'll end up getting out of my salvage parts I "could" have done the donor piece for $4050-$1500 or around $3500 for $70k WRX parts. I think that is really amazing!!!! Wow to Factory 5
Now I chose to upgrade brakes disks and hawk hps pads, clutch, header, timing belt, oil and water pumps, powder coating parts, PS and AC delete and LSD. Those choices look to cost me about $3000 additional...

Suggest add averages to bottom of chart. Getting an average cost of donor, and average age of donor, would really help validate FFR assertion of $15K completed cost. Would probably need to throw out high and low outliers to make it fair. But it looks like the FFR $5K donor cost estimate might just be on the money (once you factor in cost for parts wrecked on donor, etc).
RM1SepEx
11-27-2012, 04:00 PM
the 15k would be easy if you use stock components... after selling off parts from my roll over I'm at a net cost of $5608 for my WRX donor and I went with a lightened flywheel, new clutch, brake rotors, stainless brake and clutch lines, timing belt kit, oil and water pumps, ceramic header and catless up pipe, sti front LCAs, Quaife LSD, and adjustable rear arms. And I'm still selling stuff to get the net cost down.
jlahl3160
11-27-2012, 04:46 PM
I'll add the average at the end of the chart at the next update... I will make note of those excluded from the average (i.e. $16K DD)... I do not believe that is what was originally invisioned as a donor. Note also most all listed are WRX.. even with a WRX it looks like keeping it to $15k it is easily possible... depending on individual choices as RM1SepEX noted above.

Dave's $5k donor and the kit is easy to do... even with a WRX.
I had good functional stock components that could have kept my WRX donor cost down to $3104 right now and I'm still selling stuff from my donor and it was really toast, the only undamaged body panel was the left rear door! I just shipped out the up pipe and cat, one cast exhaust manifold and the exhaust manifold shields... $ back into my project.
I kept EVERY nut bolt bracket etc... so I should be all set with my donor parts and a kit. I may introduce more project creep tho... stock wheels and existing Direzzas in 16 inch or bigger wheels and tires and sell off the stock ones... Each wheel is worth more than $100 on Ebay as an example...

Just a quick note: The average price paid for donors has no bearing on the feasibility of the $15K build. What we (as a collective group) choose to spend (RM1SepEX is a good example) is only reflective of people's choices. It's not reflective of whether or not a $15K build is possible. I'm guessing most people will choose to spend more.

I think that is exactly right. My NA w/ mods build will miss the mark by about $3K -- but that is because I chose to let someone else (AJW Performance) deal with the donor for me. I won't need to disassemble a donor, and won't have to dispose of the remains -- and that is worth the extra money to me. But the $15K build is absolutely doable.

What happened to this thread? Since Copart doesn't publish what the cars sold for, I think it would be helpful to get an idea what winning bids are so the rest of us can go in to the bidding process with some sense of how much these cars are going for and what would be a reasonable bid.
Samiam1017
11-03-2013, 06:56 PM
I don't think you can go into bidding a car with a price in mine based on what somebody else might have paid for there's. the prices are definitely higher now then a year ago. Different areas may have a subaru specific dismantler who is gonna drive the price up based on they want the cars. Like I do. Best advise i can give (I've boughten 5 donors) is set a personal limit and hope nobody else happened to bid against you.
Xusia
11-03-2013, 10:03 PM
Copart does publish winning bids, but the information is only available for a short time after the auction is over.
I think setting a personal limit is wise. And I think knowing what others have paid - that is, what donors can be had for - can help you set a realistic limit.

I was able to buy mine thru IAAI (via a Broker). I bought a 2004 Forester XT which was hit in the rear -- no front end damage at all and nothing to cause a problem with any parts needed for the 818 (I know, this was a bit of a lucky find).
This model came with a 2.5L Turbo (using a TD04, not like STi VF39) and with the appropriate 5-speed tranny. Thus essentially most of the good stuff needed for an 818 build. I have since had it checked out by a local Subaru specialist and got the green light on all the mechanicals (although one cyl had a little leak down, but nothing major).
Costs:
Auction winning bid: $2600
Fees (broker & IAAI): ~800
Shipping: $600
Total investment: ~$4000

I bought mine in Wrentham, MA $2200.00 2002 WRX Hit front driver's side. Engine running 157,000 miles. Front left lower control arm bent so I towed home. Sold off about $800 in parts that I do not need. This may have been a flood car because it is horribly rusted underneath but the interior looked brand new carpet and all. Here is a question it had a lot of aftermarket performance parts like strut braces etc.. it also had a turbo timer installed, should I use it? I have never seen the need for one before. Compresion cold was 148, 154, 158, 156 and the transmission was just replaced with a used one (paint marker all over it). I think I did OK.

Yeah, after seeing lots of donors from the rust belt, I'm sooo happy with the condition of my parts! Although we're both in CA, Jeff's in the SF bay area, hundreds of miles away. We made a deal for him to finish stripping it and sell off the unneeded parts/chassis. I travel to San Jose for business, so one trip, I got a one-way ticket, rented a truck up there, and hauled it all back. Worked out well for both of us... He made some money back and I didn't have to finish the tear down.

2006 WRX 2.5L turbo sedan with 134,000 miles. Minor front end damage and needs new radiator/fans. The hood hinges are the only other donor parts I need to replace. It was a sleeper with many extras. Cobb turbo back exhaust, sway bars, cold air intake, short shifter, and best of all 12" Wilwood front brakes.
I paid a total of $1,950 (bid price of $1,650) with all of the extras from Copart here in So Cal. I plan on making a few dollors and having all of my donor parts with some great performance parts for my 818s. I can only hope the build goes this well.
