I don’t even have a donor in my sights yet, and over thinking this, but I am thinking about what the worst thing that can happen if I do this.. that is buy a donor, and commit to the project.?

Air bag deployment while working on the donor / assembling the kit came to mind. For those that have done such, besides reading (several times) the SRS portion of the service manual, are there any special iteme to pay atention to / avoid?

Thanks in advance

John

You can unplug the airbags at the airbag.

Don't beat the sensors with a sledge hammer. :p

Disconnect battery
Step on brake pedal or try to turn over the motor to make sure the system is fully discharged.
Unplug the SRS harnesses from the SRS control module.
Disconnect sensors from the harness
Disconnect the individual bags from the harness
Remove bags
Take bags to empty field and place under assorted heavy objects
Apply 14 volts to the bag wires.
Profit

If you deploy the bag you're left with an empty center section. I didn't worry about this since mine deployed in the wreck.

The safest way to handle working with airbags is disconnecting the battery and waiting half an hour. The airbag control module for whatever reason holds a charge for a while after battery disconnect, I assume so incase the battery gets dislodged before the module can send a signal.

After that just make sure you have no static on you, ground yourself before handling the airbags and you'll be fine. Find a place that will take the airbags and becareful with storage. They CAN go off with a simple discharge of static.

And first post with power restored! Heat never felt so damn good while it's 40 outside lol.

Airbags are worth some $$$ to some people. My stepdaughter's Outback had a minor collision resulting in some body damage, the driver's seatbelt locked and two deployed airbags. It ran fine and drove straight, but it would have cost $2,000 apiece to replace the airbags. The car was technically totaled, and I couldn't legally sell it. Total loss.

Donor! :)

Nope.

No way I could keep a dead car in my driveway for two years. :-(

Subie techs usually say unplug battery, then apply and hold brake pedal for min of 10 seconds, 3 times. That's enough to clear ECU

sell your wheel with airbag... buy sparco. win.this is a chance to really make back some money from your donor!
a stock OEM airbag can be worth a grand for people needing one after an accident, there should be no problem selling it quickly but make sure you sell it locally as you cant ship them certain ways (air is a nono?)

use an aftermarket wheel and you made your car a little lighter too
