View Full Version : Did Anyone Suffer Damage From The Storm?

Just wanted to make sure everyone was okay.
Our prayers go out to all who suffered, are still suffering, and are without power!
EDIT: Just realized that I posted this in the 818 area. Should have probably found a more general place to put this. Sorry.

In Milford, CT, just a couple decent-sized limbs down that grazed the garage, but no real damage. I'm surprised we never lost power or phone/TV/Internet. Milford has the longest shoreline in CT, and the coastal neighborhoods got hit pretty hard.

Anywhere near Riverhead? I lived there as a child for a couple of years (a long, long, time ago........ 1950's) --Seems to me we got hit by Hurricane Hazel while we were there.

Litchfield,NH, by Manchester; 50+MPH winds, lots of rain, lost one piece of siding on the roof facia and 16 hours without power but we're fine.
Went out early this am, neeeeeded coffee! and found a house up the street had burned to the ground, trees down, a real mess.
Upside was the smile I got from the three Indians who run the 7/11 up the street.
They had no power and brought them coffee from Dunk's..

No power here, large tree took out a corner of my shed and top deck railing. So many trees and power lines down around the neighborhood I am not expecting power to be back for a few days. The neighbors have it worse.. huge trees down and 10ft root balls upended. But family is safe, everything else is repairable.
Sorry picture is dark, took it last night late.

Growing up in South-East coastal CT (Noank/Mystic area) I remember going through a few big storms, Gloria and Bob. I'm glad everyone's OK. I was heading home (San Diego) from the SF Bay Area on Monday evening and our flight got waived off on final approach due to fog and had to land in Ontario (California, not Canada!) along with a bunch of other planes heading for SD. It was a huge mess and we were bussed the rest of the home. But seeing what the North-East is dealing with I can can't really complain!

Most of the people impacted are probably still without power. Im in the office today, but power went down around 7:30 Monday night, it looks like it will be days before its back on. No real damage to the house, but a lot of trees down, need to figure out how to get a 7ft root ball out of the back yard and replace our fence. All in all though we are okay and hanging in there.
One big issue right now is most of the gas stations are closed so those running off of generators (as we are) are hunting for and trying not to run out of gas before finding more. Going to head back towards home in a little bit and hunt as I go.

In Milford, CT, and just a couple of miles from ScottKoschwitz, but in my case lost power 6:30PM, still not back on yet. Lots of trees in the 'hood are down, but mine all OK, just a couple of branches lost. I did lose some shingles though, as did many of my immediate neighbors. In some spots down to the wood sheathing. Gotta get that fixed ASAP.

^Damn that sucks.
Huge tree went down at 7pm (the night of the storm), right across from my house. Power lines saved it from crashing into my neighbors house. Huge blue lightning type sparks coming from one downed wire. Lost power obviously. Fired up the generator and was back online. :) Power company arrived at 7pm, and pulled a new line. Tree company cut the tree up in 30 min in pitch black with crazy wind. It was an impressive site. Power back on and generator off at 8:45pm! I was very impressed.

That is impressive for sure. We have a tree down and broken pole at the end of our Cul-de-sac, line hanging low tha we have to manuver under to get out. They still havent touched it. Thinking its going to be a while before we are fully back on. I drove to PA last night to fill up our gas cans, lines in NJ are 3-4 hours long IF you can find a station with gas and power on.

I have a friend who had two trees lose limbs and fall on his 1970+/- Saab Sonett race car and other stuff in a portable garage
It's not uncommon to go without power up here in Maine...
I believe in being responsible for yourself...
10,000 watt generator, backfeed the whole house, except the hot tub!
about 40 gallons of "utility" gas, several jerry can's and two surplus plastic fuel cells (20 gallon & 8 gallon w/electric fuel transfer pump) fill up before a storm.
Sorm coming, fill every vehicle with gas, can always siphon to get "utility fuel"
I have 10 cars... 150-175 gallons in vehicles
8.3 gallons gas in the generator
coleman fuel, 2 gallons, 2 lanterns, two 2 burner stoves
propane, 100 gallon tank for house use, stove and heater
4-6 small 2 lb tanks for 3 small backpacking stoves and 3 small grills
2 twenty pound propane tanks for grill and portable heaters
10 gallons of propane, propane salamander heater
Full tank of fuel oil, 260 gallons?
Superinsulated solar home with 8000 lb finnish fireplace. www.mainewoodheat.com Ave 2 cords + year wood, used 164 gallons oil last year.
8+ cords of mixed hardwood stacked and drying, 3 cords ready for this year, 5 will be ready next
I can last quite a while, even w/o a fuel station
naturally I have tons of food on shelves and in the freezer
two nice lockers with various firearms too and a minimum of 4000 rounds in the various calibers...
Now to get my deer, more prime meat, spending some time in the woods...
:-) I should have been a boy scout! We live a different kind of life out here don't we?

I'm with you. My list of backup systems is very similar to yours, though I don't have the solar power availability nor the capability for wood firing. But we could survive many days without power at my house.........

Now this guy is my hero!
I'm orginally a "city" boy but came to NH 12 years ago.
After that ice storm a few years back I got educated and fast.
Bought a 5500w generator,8-6 gal gas cans and when weather is coming you fill the car and get in the groceries.
Have a brand new generator this year that just will not turn over and "catch"..

Wow. Such a different world. I've lived in Oregon all but 6 years of my life and can't EVER remember being without power for what I would call a significant period of time. Several hours, sure - that's happened a few times. But I don't ever recall being without power overnight. If we did have something catastrophic happen, I can honestly say I am ill prepared. I do have solar panels (quite a large array, actually), but I'd have to do some hacking to get it to work during a power outage (sounds weird I know, but it's a safety feature for the technicians working on restoring power).

These new boxes they add when you have solar or wind power in addition to your regular electrical service are because people don't understand that you have to toss OFF the main breakers on your electrical panel..IF you don't your essentially trying to power the whole grid yourself and thats the danger.
Toss off the mains and everyone is safe.

I had a new 200 amp electrical panel installed last year and asked the electrican to put a box outside with a 30amp snap lock female connector on a dedicated 40amp 220 circuit. He said I can't do that if it's for a generator.
I said "It's for my heavy duty power tools and smiled"
Box was installed..nuff said..

Good news
We got our power back on ! My biggest concern was I have a 93 Yr Old mother in Law that lives with us and doesnt do well in cold weather. I managed to get a cord of wood delivered just before I was to run out, but I can always use it over the winter. The power surge cost me 3 Surge protectors but saved 3 TV's. Verizon has to send me 3 new TV boxes. So a word to the wise get GOOD surge protectors for all you electronics.
I feel very bad for all those still with out power( 645,000)( on long Island ). Staten Island and the Rockaways took a big hit and some of it will never be the same. There was one area that 111, yep one hundred and eleven homes burnt to the ground because the water was so deep fireman could not help and not deep enough for the fireboat.
My prayers go out to all affected.

I was watching the news about how you guys down there were effected and my heart goes out to all of you.
I stuck this on my and CNN's facebook page:
A suggestion: How about all of us call on both campaigns to stop all the adds, contact all the SuperPACS and ask that all donate what funds they have towards these millions of people that have had their lives destroyed by this storm. I don't think most of the country understands the level of devastation that the entire eastern part of the country is trying to deal with..The election doesn't need any more adds, we all know who we are voting for but the money could go a long way to helping people who are in real need.

That ice storm was my introduction of "country living"..I managed to get a 5500w generator on Saturday of that week but couldn't find a 30a snap lock connector anywhere.
Wound up stripping out the 4 wires inside some 10/3 romex, bare wire right into the individual sockets on the gen, wrapped it all with duct tape then unplugged my dryer circuit on the panel and wired the 10/3 into that and fed the panel.
Worked fine for 4 days and kept us warm and with power..
Amazing what 30 amps can do!:D

Still no power. Getting cold in the house. But no kids or elderly to worry about, and many in my town have power, so there is a safety net for those in need. Looking at the news (while eating out at restaurant with power) and seeing what its like in the city and in NJ, really makes you feel for them. Having no power for a week pales in comparison.
