I know I asked this before but I think it was during a mad rush of post yesterday and I probably got overlooked. Does anybody remember a mention of what windshield glass there using? Oem something? Custom? Also the windshield frame steal or fiberglass. I did see a pic that showed steal gussets for support. Thx

According to Dave Smith:

I don't know all of Jim's reasons. I know that to meet the target price we didn't want to (couldn't) give up anything. Using the Subaru mirrors made sense. You'll notice the R version uses race mirrors instead of the subie units, and I'm sure some guys may choose to not use the Subie mirrors, but we needed to use them to keep that real design goal target of $9990 kit/sub $15K to complete, and I believe that the location on the steel windshield pillar (has laser cut mount holes) makes it easy to mount and is probably good for visibility because you sit pretty low in the thing, even lower with a race seat.

I don't know if I can release info on the glass, but it is from a production vehicle. I'll ask Dave if it is OK to release that info.

Hmm, do we start the guesses? My guess is a newer Miata.

Oh man, the 818 looks so butch and hard core compared to the Miata. Like an olympic gymnast standing next to a fashion model.

Hmmm, I might be talking out of my arse here but I think the 818's windscreen was larger and more raked than an MX5's.

As for being a fashion model, well, apparently they're fashion models that can run olympic rings around the gymnasts...

Hmmm..to me it just looks naked.

Do like those wheels on the MX5 though and I'm wondering if they'd suit the 818. Don't want to derail this thread so I'll through in the fact that I am certain the windscreen frame was metal. I reckon you could even run some sort of roll bar around it as well without distracting the design too much or obscuring your view.

A little extra protection thrown in as well, no?

I asked Jim about the windshield at SEMA, he said it was from a Toyota - though he didn't mention the year or model

Thanks John

The rounded corners make it likely to be from another factory convertable - because the current trend with most cars having two "strips" (fror drainage and to hide spotwelds) running just along the inside of the roof lines usually makes the windshield corners square.

Also, the lack of alot of "blackout" area means it might be from "simple" car.

I'm gonna guess something like the Pontiac Solstice.

- - I seem to recall reading somewhere that GM (or the "GM liquation" half that came out of the bankruptcy) still has huge stockpiles of Solstice/Sky parts to dump, so the price might be right also.

Got that right! :D You guys are good sports so it makes it all the better.

Remember, we're talking about the GLASS, not the frame...

Judging by the one that was tailgating me me today on the way to work, I'd put the PT Cruiser on the short-list of possibilities.

If JAE was told correctly by Jim, I'd say you guys are wrong. ;)

It has to be a relatively small car for the width to not be too wide and the height not too tall. That's not to say it couldn't be from a slightly taller car and mounted angling backwards more.

Can't be too hard to track down then. Virtually all new cars have square upper corners, so most of the 'pool' is gone. I'd start by looking at the MRS - it's got all the same basic specs as the 818.

If FFR is buying them in bulk, at a negotiated price, then they could end up being the best place to get a replacement anyways as they might pass on the savings. If so, then it becomes more of a curiousity who's windshield it is. ....Yes, I'm still curious. ;)

Sorry guys, I should have asked about the year and model of the windshield - it was my first time at SEMA and I was rushing around trying to see everything. I also asked about the coupe version, so far they have no timeline for release - I guess I will be wating a little longer.

Thanks John

I did ask Jim about the windshield frame at SEMA as well. He said it is actually a metal frame covered with fiberglass to look clean but I think it will be a little different for production as it will need to work with the soft top. I think he told me Toyota as well but I did not ask model or year either.
