View Full Version : Wiring of Speed Sensor - Coyote

working on the gauges today...
One question that I hope is an easy answer.
The speedometer (I have the FF Electric Gagues) has two yellow wires coming out to a connector (One has a black stripe and one has a red stripe). These connect via the connector to a black wire (yellow/black to Black) and white wire (Yellow/Red to White).
From there I need to connect the black and white wires to the speed sensor wires coming off the Transmission. Through the Ron Francis harness, those wires are green and grey (both labelled speed sensor)
My question is does the green wire labelled speed sensor connect to the black or white wire which goes back to the speedometer itself?

Its a pulse signal so it shouldn't matter.

Thanks. My thought from the research I was able to do was that either side was sufficient, but definitely appreciate your validation of that.

Turns out that you need both wires from the speed sensor (Sender and return) connected to the Gauge to make it work. Easy enough! Got it set up this morning and works great.

I forgot- are you using the Ford racing module to eliminate the stalling issues? I have an using a module and guage wiring. I think somewhere it said that the polarity of the module was important and I am wondering if you ran in to that. Thanks.

no I'm not using anything at this point. I've got the speed dial here, but have not installed it as I'm considering doing the "Tune" that "OldGuy" indicated worded for him.

Slider... Where did you end up on the ("tune" -vs- "Ford Speed Dial module") issue? We are at the decision point for that. Is this an issue most Coyote installs experience or just a few? Thinking maybe we just get her wired up and turn the key. See what happens...
Any additional insight would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I returned the Speed dial module. I've had the engine running, and the wheels turning, though only up on jack stands because I live in North Dakota. No stalling issues. However, once the weather turns, I will be taking it out to get a proper tune, which I'm assured by the tuner will eliminate any potential stalling, or power issues. My tuner has done a number of retrofits of the Coyote into other cars, and has seen the stalling on several, and says he has resolved them all. His view was that the Speed dial solution was a "Band-aid" and not needed if tuned properly. That is the path I'm going. I'd sure love to hear what others are thinking at this point.

You need the speed dial, and I am working on getting a tune as well. Just having the engine idling or running on stands won't produce the stall issue. I had it with my coyote coupe and the speed dial fixed the problem. I still have some partial throttle and drivability issue though so am working on getting a tune from JMS chip in MS. So far having problems getting the SCT tuner to load a tune in my FRPP control pack computer, I think because there is no serial number. Stay tuned...

Just received my crate motor and controls pack about a month ago thru Rod Baker Ford. When ordering, I asked RBF about the speed sensor and they recommended that I talk with Ford Racing. Ford Racing said that the new PCMs have been recalibrated/reprogrammed so the speed sensor is no longer needed. I'd give Ford Racing a call to verify that this info is correct. They may also be able to update or provide an update for your PCM.

Subscribing to this thread... Ordering a Coyote in a week or two so obviously the decision point of whether to wire up a speed dial is near. Curious to hear more as it comes available.
Thanks
Kevin

Spoke with JMS today and they said that they have it all sorted out...they just need distance from last port of header to O2 sensor and diameter of air intake tube and distance from TB to MAF. They create the tune based on these parameters on the SCT unit and ship it out to the customer. Has anyone installed one yet?

I talked to these guys last fall and they seemed pretty confident at that time as well. I think that "Clemson" or maybe "Oldguy" used them as I believe thats where I got their name from, so they may have some advice for you. I've chosen to use a local tuner where I can actually take the car to. They've done a number of Coyotes (no FF5s) and have had them all running perfectly, even adding 15-20 HP. I'll have the car to them in mid May and let you know how it goes!

I really would like it if there were a new version of the tune that removed the stalling issue, but I called Ford Racing on friday and they sent me the pins to add the speed input to the computer. My guy seemed very knowledgeable on the controls pack and did not know of a tune fix for the stalling coming out from them.
I hope someone comes on and proves me wrong, but for now I will be installing the speed input.
