View Full Version : Front luggage bin

Will there be room to install a luggage bin under the hood? It would be neat to cut a large Rubbermaid style bin (or make one from FG), carpet it, and bolt it under the hood, to hold a duffle bag, helmet, or WHY.

I'm also interested in this. Just big enough for a few bags of groceries?

A mundane aspect, but I intend on taking mine everywhere... and sleeping with it under my pillow.

haha. It looks like there will be space, but after adding the electric fans, not much of it.

It will be perfect for keeping a few bags of takeout chinese food warm on the way home, a duffle bag probably not

A compartment in the engine bay would be better at keeping some chinese takout warm. :D

There should be enough room somewhere for a duffel. If a lotus can manage, the 818 should be able to manage. Maybe somewhere above the transmission?

I have no doubt that as we start to build these cars that we, as a community, will come up with some fun and interesting ideas for add-ons.

They talk about these FFRs having space frames but there isn't very much space that doesn't have something crammed in it. The area around the radiator will have to have some room to breath (air leaving the rear of the rad) so that limits the most likely candidate for a "trunk". In the engine bay, I bet the area above the diff and trans will be taken up with a custom exhaust (temp side exhaust just doesn't get it). It will take some imagination to find a good spot. WEK.

This is my feeling as well. Kinda like the trunk box I have in my MKIII. Thanks Russ Thompson!

What about a trailer hitch and then attach a motorcycle trailer?

I think a trailer hitch for a small trailer is the best idea. I am going to make on for my kit when I get it.

For longer trips, a trailer is definitely a good idea. But for going to the store, work, or just around town, something onboard is needed. I realize some folks would just choose to drive another vehicle. But I'm not one of those folks. I'm building mine as a daily driver - as I know other's are - and this is something that's needed.

I agree. I'd like to be able to drive it every day.

From the picture of the guys installing the rear deck, it looks like there is enough space above the tranny too fit some sheet metal and heat shields to make a shallow trunk. Chinese run, maybe pizza, on game day fill it with ice and beer for the tailgate.

It was brought up in a coupe photoshop thread (here: http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?6663-Current-818-(May-2012)-Coupe-Add-Ons ) that the F430 has two frontal radiators, thus why the car has 2 large frontal intakes. If you had two large side intakes (like the F430), and didn't keep the stock radiator (mine is busted anyways), you could (theoratically) use two radiators and use the entire central area as a cargo bin.

Here is a diagram of the F430 Challenge car radiator setup. It looks like all they did was have two equally sized radiators with equally split lines to ensure the flow left and right is even. My autocross car uses two radiators of different sizes and different length hoses and (while not the most efficient) works quite well.

Best bare front end photo I could find that shows the radiator.

It will be interesting to see how the airflow works it's way past the radiator. It look like it might be possible to put in a 'V' air splitter behind the radiator to get the air out into the wheel wells. This might open up a bit of space between the 'V' and the 'firewall'. Could end up with enough space for a couple bags of groceries, laptop bag, etc. there.

I like that one too. Too bad my fiberglass skills pretty much suck and the CNC I have access to can't do pieces that large.

I don't see any room in this car for any sort of trunk like area without cooking the contents. Trailer hitch for me.

What would you use for the radiators though? A literbike radiator perhaps?

Unless it is covered by a fixed panel, the triangle between and on level with the upper control arms looks like a great spot for a compartment.
http://www.factoryfive.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/project818spyphoto5.jpg

There is also dead space behind each rear tire. A compartment could be placed on each side and accessed very easily.

I would put ice cream in there, but I'd put a gym bag there (this of course, assumes the radiators are side mount and ducted outwards).

Dual Del Sol Radiators? Not sure. I'd have to measure a stock one. Jeff Colegroves FM used dual Del Sol radiators. Granded, it's a 1/2 liter engine, but it's a snowmobile engine meant to run in freezing temps. He kept it under 110F in high 90's ambient temp.

Move the radiators behind the doors ala f355 and the whole front opens up. You could use 2 liter bike radiators there and just open up those side scoops, vent the rear fender liners behind the radiators and put in the 818R rear grill to vent the added heat and voila, whole front is open for a trunk.

Literbike radiators are small and light, but tend to be costly (at least new; I have no idea of the use market) and fragile (a rock the size of a marble ruined one of mine, which is why radiator guards exist). Just pointing out there might be better options for such a project.

Put the radiator in back and use the R vents on the rear. Add ducting to funnel underside airflow into it.

True, I checked ebay and CBR 1000 radiators are $350 a pop. The Del Sol way Mechie3 mentioned is probably the better route to go.

There's actually a nice amount of room behind the seats. If you can figure out how to flip the seat back forward like a 2 seat car might this is very usable space. Also with some creative exhaust placement there is a lot of space either side of and possibly above the transmission. It will be interesting to see if FFR does anything to make some storage space but for the price point don't be surprised if they don't. However I would bet that this is something that the existing FFR vendors will quickly provide a solution for.

Even if they don't make something to keep the base price down, it would be nice to see an option kinda like with the soft top.

I'm not suggesting FFR make changes as they need to keep the radiator for cost/donor reasons. I'm thinking of ways for a future builder to potentially make a full size trunk up front.
