Guys,

First post here, I'm considering a MK4 and I live in the state of Iowa. I've been doing my homework on registration and it appears that Iowa has a stipulation regarding side exhaust that may change my plans. I'm concerned about having to make major changes to comply with the code but sometimes these things are written into law but not followed. Does anyone here have experience with this in Iowa and what's the feedback. I see that DrummerMike has some heat shields that look good but is that enough? Your thoughts are appreciated.

d. No part of the exhaust system shall pass through any area of the vehicle that is used as a passenger carrying compartment, and shall be so constructed that persons entering the vehicle cannot make contact with the exhaust system.

e. All exterior side exhaust pipes must be fully shielded and any vertical truck exhaust stacks shall be shielded to the top of the cab.

Sounds like the heat shields would suffice as it appears that your state has considred the possibility of sidepipes. You can always do undercar exhaust.

I hope someone from Iowa will chime in here w/ real experience. My thinking is that states that I am a bit familiar w/ (Va and Md) have rules for historic, antique, street rod etc. titles, tags, and inspections. Usually you need to figure how you will be able to title the car, and the inspection rules will follow the title and/or tag. Good luck!
