View Full Version : Life must go on while I wait for the 818.

So I've got twin boys that just turned 12. The have been Scouts for over 7 years now and are only 2 ranks away from thier Eagle. This means more camping and exploring than I have ever done in the past, combined.

I was using a 1995 Montero for the dirty stuff until a few months ago. This is why I don't anymore:

I'll spare the details, but suffice it to say that everyone was OK (my 2 boys and 2 more) and I re-learned to always scout a trail before you attempt it (I say re-learned because we all know the rules but sometimes let it lapse).

I finally got it's replacement after tons of research and soul searching. It did take a bit of 818 money, but I wasn't going to be first in line anyways.

2006 Land Rover LR3 HSE.

So, I'm curious what everyone else uses for camping/adventuring/getting dirty?

Ouch! What was that, a Montero?

I have a couple of vehicles that I use for people and toy hauling. The first is the beast: a 200 Ford Explorer:

I use it for all long distance trips and it also pulls my camping trailer (and the roadster obviously).

I also have a Mercedes ML 430 that actually makes a pretty good off road vehicle. I've used it for lots of scout camping trips i took with my son when he was a bit younger. I would have traded it in for something else by now but it's not worth anything. So I keep it 'cause it's paid for and makes a good safe driver for my kids.

I have a Toyota Tacoma Prerunner. Best truck I ever owned.

Trucks are like any useful tool; once you own one, you can't ever be without one. We've been married 18 years and bought our first Cherokee in '95 and, with the exception of a few years of GMC Yukon XL ownership, haven't been without a Jeep since. My wife now has a '12 Grand Cherokee and I made sure to check the Hemi and Class IV tow package on the option list when she was ordering it.

Dave: Looks more like an Excursion than an Explorer? IIRC, the ML was one of the first to use the ABS sensors and the brakes to replace old-school locking diffs to good effect.

Chris: How do you like the GC? I've been reading that it gets great reviews compared to the older ones. The tech is now a lot like comes on the Rover I just picked up (ABS based traction control, electronic lockers, air suspension, independent suspension, selectable terrain knob).

I've had everything from lifted big tired trucks and jeeps to a 67 IH Scout. Now I have a Toyota FJ Cruiser. As an off-roader it is my favorite. Power, technology, comfort, and Toyota reliability. It just can't be beat.
