After 30 years of marriage my wife never fails to amaze me.
Ever since I took a traveling job many years ago, and having many other priorities get in the way, I struggle to find the time to work on the Cobra, and since I do not spend much time in the garage it has become a dumping ground for everything that we don't know what to do with. So, even when I have a rare few minutes to work on the car it takes about an hour to move stuff and get organized, and sometime it just takes the fun out of it and I don't bother to work on the car. Seeing my frustration, my wife just bought me a garage makeover complete with epoxy floor paint and a full wall of cabinets with a built in work bench. She even paid the deposit before telling me so I couldn't try to talk her out of it. With this new garage it will once again become my favorite room in the house and I will be spending as much time out there as possible when it is done. This may finally be the winter when I get the car done. Words cannot describe how excited I am about this. My wife is the best!

Isn't it nice to have a "keeper" My better half's been there for "only" 28 years!

Hi Steven K,

It doesn't matter how it gets done as long as it gets done. Your wife gave you one of the best "tools" ever! We were designing and building a house and the garage was one of my main priorities so an extra five feet at the end for "that bank of cabinets" was one must have. So now the "cobra" as she calls it, resides in one half of the 3 car garage and her Camaro in the other half (my dd outside). That's far enough away to make everybody comfortable. But I know exactly what you are saying about not being able to work effectively in a overflow storage area. By the time you get things moved and arranged the way you need it, half your energy is spent and then you probably have to move everything back into place (not good). I had to build a 12x 20 barn to act as the new overflow area. So I guess the moral is, you never have enough space or more correctly, you will fill whatever space you have with stuff (ala George Carlon). Your wife probably wants the project finished as much as you do. You're very lucky. WEK.

Steven-

Well I guess at 23 years of marriage, I am the newbie!! However, that is one fine woman you have there Sir!! Wow what a wonderful surprise, and a completely understanding bride!

I wish you luck on your build, and I also hope you find some creative way to thank her for her selflessness. Congratulations and good luck from a Chapel Hillian!!

Regards,

Steve

Steve,

Thanks for sharing with us what a great gal your wife is. I really enjoy seeing couples visit our showroom when it's hard to tell which one is more excited. Can't wait to see the finished car and be sure to take lots of photos of the build.

wow that one right there is a keeper, lol. Like you, I have to work around the other crap in the garage and that in itself becomes a job! Congratulations on making at least (2) right decisions in your life!!

Sally,

It is great when the wives are on board with things like this. I always loved these cars and had been considering one probably around 2000. One day in 2002 when I was away on business my wife calls and asks, "what ever happened to building a Cobra"? I told here I had too many things going on at I had put it on the back burner. She told me one just passed her on the highway and I needed to move it up to the front burner. The rest is history. I can't say I was surprised since she enjoys car shows as much as I do, and she even likes the exhaust smell of cars with carbs as they pass. Gotta love her.

Hi Steve,

Congrats on the Garage re-do. I've been wanting to do the same thing to mine, but it seems that I have too many GTM parts and tools and build related stuff in the way. (Or at least that's the excuse that I've used until now). That's a very cool thing that your wife has done.

You're right about these builds being much more enjoyable when our wives WANT to be a part of it all. My wife (Pam) is always asking me when I think the GTM will be done, because she wants us to ba able to climb into it and take off for 100 mile lunch runs, and car shows, and Cars and Coffee. With your renewed excitement, maybe we'll finish them up at the same time and meet up at Cars and Coffee very soon.

Congrats again!

Mike

Awesome Steve, congratulations. We always tell folks you need permission, space, time, money. In that order.

Mike, She contracted with Carolina Custom Garages and they have been very easy to deal with. I will let you know how it goes. They drop off a trailer a few days before they start the work so you can get everything out while they work, and then they leave it for a few days after they are done so you can unload.
Pam and my wife sound alike. We like Asheville and I think we will be doing many lunch runs in the Cobra.

Gopher, it seems like you have a keeper too.

Jeff, The time for me has been an issue, but I never really thought much about the space. There has been many times where I have had an hour or two and wanted to go work on the car, but there is nothing more demotivating than having to spend half your limited time rearranging things before you can get started, and then spending time putting it all back. The new garage will be my favorite room in the house and the only thing that concerns my wife with this gift is that she may not get me out of the garage. She may be right.
