New Spec Engine Build...Questions and Tips

Starting down the road of my 2013 build, but I have a few questions.

First ones are for Jim: Any rule changes that I need to know about before I start? Any changes to specs or opening up some of the standards?

Second set of questions: What are some of the lessons learned and such in other builds done so far?
What connectors/bolts are people using now? APR?

Any other good tips?

Maybe we can make this thread a sticky for others too.

I am going to start copying some of the other threads in here so all of the engine update info is in one place.

The biggest problem seen here on the west coast has been with ignition. The new system stresses the stock ignition to the max, and we have seen high speed misses which were hard to sort out. Basically we all replaced the entire engine compartment from firewall forward (dizzy, coil, plugs, wires, even an entire wiring harness!). Also carefully check your computer...I went through three before I found one that gave the advertised horsepower(others had inadequate spark advance at high rpm)...remember these computers are twenty years old!. In the case of Robert Walter failure of a "new" distributor was even found. Your entire engine support system must be in tip top shape.

The other problem I forgot to mention is sound. Both Robert and I have been black flagged for sound...105 db for me and 108 for Robert. As it now stands we are illegal at ALL NorCal tracks! Ouch! (we both live and race in NorCal) Still working on a viable solution.

Valid Upper intake answer:


The NASA new rules state that upper and lower intake is part # TFS-51500003..The picture on the Trick flow website looks the same as the picture..Here is the link..I would have to call TF and see if there is a part # cast into the intake..Thanks

So building my final parts list

other than the T/F package, what other items do I need to add?

I needed to get a timing chain cover gasket, second TB gasket and a front crank seal so far, more to come probably. I'm just doing a bare bones top end conversion; short block is still in the car, using same timing chain, lifters, water pump, sensors.... so far. I'm in the middle of cleaning the block and should start assembling tomorrow.
