View Full Version : What's the scoop on the Scoop?

I'm going to be installing the body Saturday and I'm going to be tackling the body work myself. I've noticed that most of the builds bond the scoop to the hood and finish the seam and rivets so it looks like one piece. Didn't the original leave the rivets exposed? Is there a reason for one or the other besides aethethetics and personal choice?
The front flanges are squared off. Should they be radiused in either or both methods of installation? Finally, if I go exposed rivets, is there a rivet (or other fastener) that has a clean head and looks decent on the underside of the hood. The aluminum pop rivets supplied in the kit leave a pretty unsightly lump on the backside that I wouldn't want to see everytime I open the hood.

Don't forget, before the MKIV, the hood and scoop were one piece. I had mine cut off and had a MKIV scoop put on with button head screws.
I'll go take some pics of my install for you to look at.

Yes, try http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-rivets/=j9yr0w Wide Thickness Range Blind Rivets. They pull the body of the rivet with the mandrel which also expands the body that is in the hole to make a tighter joint. I have used them for years and they are very good.

Using the K.I.S.S. method, I used button head screws and acorn nuts from Lowes. It's a bit easier to exchange them in case you need them longer or shorter. I trimmed my scoop with a one inch lip around the scoop, rounded the corners and two inch spacing between the screws.

Here are some quik shots with a cell phone. I wanted to show you the fact that the hood was extended under the scoop and the button screws:

Sorry these are so blurry. If you need to see better pics, I have a DSLR that will take some really good shots. Just let me know.

We, well my body guy, had a hard time getting the scoop to lay flat, and we decided to bond it to the hood and finish. I really like it both ways. Your choice.

Thanks. They are 8-32x1/2 stainless. Backed by #10 nylon washer and stainless acorn nuts.

I never new there was a change in the scoop design. That clears up everything and will cetainly make my body work a bit easier.

Maybe the wrong link for the button head screws? Or you're doing something really unique.
