PPG lists the top car colors for 2011.
20 percent, White
19 percent, Silver
18 percent, Black
15 percent, Grey
9 percent, Red
9 percent, Blue
7 percent, Earth tones of Brown, Tan, or Gold
2 percent, Green
1 percent, Other

With colored body panels, it is important I don't have to repaint to get the color I want.

I hope FFR will offer variety of colors. If they don't have the color I want, I hope they will allow me to pay extra to get the color I want. Since these kits are made to order, it seems like a given FFR will give customers the color they want. I want bright Yellow please. ( I guess this puts me into the 1 percent )

The last time Dave spoke on the subject they were still deciding on how to produce the body panels, with the undertone being that not all panels will be of the same construction. Dave also mentioned that color matching between different manufacturing techniques can, and likely will, be an issue.

Putting 2 and 2 together leads me to believe that the intial offerings will have a limited color pallet to choose from. Once the initial R@D is out of the way, I'm sure that expanding the options will be a priority.

Now, if it turns out that all the panels end up being made from gel-coated fiberglass, then I suppose a custom color (when ordering) could be arrainged from day 1. I, personally, find this unlikely unless FFR goes with a black accent heavy scheme where all the non-fiberglass panels are a basic black - leaving only the fiberglass panels to carry the cars main color.

One a related note.....Who remembers that the first year Miata was only available in red, white, and blue? BRG came out next on the first (of many) special edition.

I understand new production vehicles having limited colors. They have to crank out thousands quickly. Factory Five will not be building thousands at a time. Each one of the 818 kits are Hand Built. Small numbers are produced. The sprit of Factory Five is to build stuff that regular car companies won't or can't. This is not a mechanical issue like allowing for a 6 speed or different motor. Offering different colors or allowing a customer to pay extra for a custom color may be another task, but I think it should be allowed.

Don't get me wrong Murray. I'm with you on the hopes of a full (or even custom) pallette. I was just relaying what Dave has said on the subject and what I think it may mean to early production kits.

The Miata comment was strictly trivia. I did not mean to imply that it was in any way related to FFR or the 818.

I tend to agree that a sort of flat black will be used for panels like grille inserts, diffuser, and some kind of accent peice on the sides. If the color panels are separated, small color variation could make the process easier to put into production. Remember, I said small variations. The quality control for this process could be one of the biggest problems FFR has to deal with considering it's the first thing someone sees and measures (eye appeal). It could be that the first released are the colors that can be replicated the easiest. I like the old Ford montra of any color you want as long as it's black! WEK.
