View Full Version : Ginetta G40R: comparable car for twice as much?

I thought I would post about this car since it seems comparable in performance. The 818 is a little heavier (by 8 pounds) and ~55hp more powerful (with wrx engine).

One thing I find interesting is that it uses a gel-coat finish as well. And, even though the review complain about it, it doesn't look that bad. Of course one would have to see it in person to truly know.

Is this what we can expect from the 818 body I wonder?

It's a little more then twice at 30k pounds(1.58 dollars per 1 pound, that's 47 thousand american). I can see why they complained about gel coat for such a priced car at literally 3x the price. If anyone has any issue with the gel coating for the 818, they have the option to paint. Gel coat is for those who don't care that much about top of the line paint jobs(we subaru guys are used to it lol).

Honestly at 3x the price with 55hp less power then an untuned WRX motor, I just don't see any comparison.

I was thinking more of a performance comparison. Also I think that more 818 builds will still probably end up in the 20k range considering build materials, wheels/tires, interior bits.

Good performance comparision. The lower HP is made up for with the better throttle response and the slight edge in controllability it brings. So, I bet time around a track is likely comparable. I think the styling is fine, as (IMHO) it's secondary to the performance (like the 818).

I wonder why it's more expensive? Depending on the reason, can FFR really bring the 818 in @ $10K?

Why do you think doing so is a challenge? FFR sells other comparable models at similar prices. I think the real challenge will be its weight target.

Their website doesn't provide much in the way of pictures of the chassis. It does say it has an FIA legal cage, so that addresses safety concerns. I really like the overall shape because it reminds me of the Z4 Coupe, which is probably one of my favorite cars on the planet. From their website it looks like they sell complete cars, not kits. That's the price difference right there. The company has been around for a long time. Established in 1958 then bought in 2005. They already have established race series.

I wonder why it's more expensive?

I think it's because the Ginetta comes assembled and without a donor you have to source, part-out, and discard.

Also, any production car does comes with refinements and safety features.

If factory five builds the 818 correctly they will have one he'll of a winner. Let's just hope the road version of the car comes with the proper refinements necesary to compete with these types of kits. There's really nothing out there at the price point with the exception of the rcr kit, but that's double the price. Let's cross our fingers........

I like the older Ginettas... G20 anyone?

The price difference is largely because it's assembled and not a kit. It also has a roof and side windows. The FF cars are only a bargain if you assemble them yourselves and should not be price shopped against cars that are runners without taking that into account.

I think its a great comparison car. Try having an 818 built by a pro using all new parts. It would be more then 20K. Now add in a top and roll up windows. Both cars are spartan, simple, and have good power to weight ratios.

I prefer the G4 and G12.

As far as HP, a tune ($100 by a local tuner, $300-$400 for a pro tuner), and a non stock downpipe ($100-$400 depending on brand/type) and you're looking at more than 55hp over the Ginetta. Instead of 230 chp, you're looking at 300chp (at least with the 2.5l motors). Now you're 130hp ahead.
