Hi all,

I've got someone working on building headers for the Coyote for use in the Mk4. However, to build them exact they need to know the final desired location of the sidepipes so they can match the headers exactly. Of course, when I was at the build school in Howell, we simply mated the sidepipes to the headers, which pretty much gave us the final location. So I feel a bit like I've got the "Chicken and the egg" issue going on here. I can't build the headers until I know where the side pipes will go, and I can put the sidepipes on until I know where the headers will go. Now... I realize i just need to figure out where I want the side pipes to be, mount them, and then build the pipes to match them. What I'm looking for is a little guidance on how to properly located the pipes. Does anyone have any good pictures and measurements of where the mounts go, distances from footbox, frame, etc? Anything is appreciated. Thanks guys

I would mount your body and get all that data since it changes car to car. The side pipe fit on my car could have been much better. I wish i had done something like what you are doing so i could get them perfectly level and close to the body.

Do these help? Not at home so can't give dimensions. But I agree you really need body mounted to get the final setup. These are GAS-N pipes with BBK headers on my 306.

I'm with Edward and Mike. Although in theory it possible to do it without the body I'm afraid it is asking for trouble. Put the body on along with the elephant ears; they make a big difference in sidepipe fit.

Thanks again for the quick response and great info. Definitely agree that the body needs to go on. Just wondering, do you think putting the bulb seal on (or not) makes any difference for making the measurements on the sidepipe location?

You want the body in it's final position, as best you can. That means bulb seal on, elephant ears (splash guards) on as Jeff said and doors hung and adjusted. Doors matter because sometimes you have to adjust the bottom of the body in/out to get the best door alignment, and this is the exact area you're also adjusting the pipes to. You not only want the pipes level front to back, but also parallel to the body.

Well, At least this way you may be one of the few whose headers match the cutouts in the body.

Just a quick update. I've been working with "Stainless Headers" to design and build new headers for my MK4 (Coyote). Delays have been due to my schedule, but I've got to tell you that Chris (Owner) and his guys are fabulous and have been very helpful... including spending Saturday morning in my garage helping mock up the final position of the sidepipes. I've seen the work this group does, and am excited not only about what the end product will be, but in the fact that their stuff is American made. They come back later this week to build the mockups, and then will build the real thing. I expect them to be hanging on the car within a couple of weeks, and will post pictures and answer whatever questions I can. If anyone else is looking for an answer for the Coyote headers, I'd suggest hanging on a couple extra weeks and I'll let you know what I think. My expectation however is that this will be an outstanding solution, custom built for the MK4 and the Coyote... I'll be glad to put anyone in touch with them directly if you are interested.
