View Full Version : In a race only suspension setup, is there such a thing as too low of a ride height?

Howdy racers, my understanding is that anything higher than 4" ride height for our cars is too much, but is there any point at which it's too low (assuming it's not dragging on the ground)? We just finished getting the PS rack installed and in the process of locating the new rack and PS pump/plumbing we ended up with the front LCAs and tie rods and essentially parallel to ground. As a result we accomplished getting the bumpsteer down to about 50/1000, however we currently have the ride height set up at about 3.25" front, 3.50" rear. FYI, other settings are positive 6 castor, negative 2.0 camber and 1/8 overall toe out.

I have a lot to get used to with the switch from Manual to PS and switching the rack ratio from 4.0TTL to 2.7TTL, and the car of course feels insanely light and darty. I'll be at Monticello for the next 2 days with NARRA doing the Time Trial event and will report back but I am curious if there any opinions out there that it's a bad idea to be that low.

Front suspension camber gain in compression will be less at the lower ride height and the roll center will be lower. Is that worse than the slightly higher ride height? It really depends on your set up. As with any suspension set up it's the combination that is key not any one setting. I have mine at a lower ride height than the customary 4" and it seems to work very well.

I understand the "why" for the excess negative camber and the toe out. However the tow out is the major contributing factor to the light and darty feeling you're getting. While the toe out helps turn in, it's going to kill any secure feeling at high speed, and if the car is also street driven on the highway it's going to be unbearable. The scrub on the tires is also going to wear the inside edges of the tires in a very short time.

You also want to check that the shocks do not bottom out on the bump stops.

Have you tried 1/16" tow out? or 0 tow? With power steering you can also crank up the caster to say 9deg.

I know when I made the switch from manual to power steering, it took me a while to get used to PS, since you need to develop a finer sense and feel for the car, not having to man-handle it like you did with manual rack.
