I attempted a search to check if threads about the above were done already. No luck. So I'll ask this question: if I want to change out my 302 at some time, how would a 351 fit with what I have? How much would have to be changed out? Would the intake work? Are heads interchangeable? How about the bell housing? I thought 50 ci would be a good next step but it could be more trouble than it's worth. I know the deck height is taller on a 351 W but that's about all I know regarding this engine. Has anyone out there ever gone in this direction and what pros and cons would you give for the experience? Thanks in advance, WEK.

You will need a new intake, new distributor, longer push rods (I think) and new headers or J pipes to match the engine to the exhaust. I think pretty much everything else will work.

What Mike said plus oil pan.

Flywheel and harmonic balancer are different also - 28 oz counterweight rather than 50 oz.

Why the oil pan?

Michael I am not sure the difference but pan manufacturers seem to list a different number for the 351 vs 302. I saw one where they just added one additional digit to the part number so maybe its a small difference. maybe it's the pickup rather than the pan.

- The diameter of the rear main cap is bigger on a 351, and the oil pan has to fit the cap.

- You can use the same distributor, but then you also have to use the same oil pump and oil pump drive shaft. Not a bnig deal, and can save some serious bux.

- the only difference in the oil pump is the size of the drive shaft.

- because the block is taller, the intake valley is wider. You can buy spacers to fit a 302 manifold on a 351 block; but then the carb might be too tall. You're better off buying a new manifold and carb.

- new headers, side pipes are the same.

- Alternator bracket is usually different, because the front mounting hole in the head has moved. Same with power steering brackets.

Just stroke it. Everything will fit then.

What? Nobody else thinks its a good way to get the cubes, but have everything fit right back in?
