View Full Version : Coyote - Straight Pipes (What have guys used to attach to the FF Headers?)

Just found out that the Coyote is not officially supported by FF for the Roadster due to the fact that the Straight Pipes are still not finalized. I wish they would have shared that piece of information with me when I ordered the kit back in May. At that time I'd just been told that I was very fortunate with my timing because the headers were finalized and everything was ready to go... Very dissapointed.... Regardless, I've got the roadster, and I've got the Coyote (with the roadster headers on) but apparently can't finalize the build with parts from FF because they don't have the pipes made yet. However, I'm obviously seeing guys running the Coyote in the Roadster so there must be a work around. Can any of you share if there are aftermarket straightpipes that will work with the FF Coyote Headers? or if not, what you did to make this work? Thanks

The two exhaust options that I know exist are:

1 - Buy the FFR 4.6L SOHC headers ($649) and then get the ASTGlenn flange. Weld the two together, and it works.
2 - Buy the FFR Coyote headers ($599) and modify the hell out of standard J-pipe to get it to work.

Or just wait, and wait, and wait for the FFR coyote specific J-pipes to come out.

This entire situation has become such a debacle. While I understand FFR needs to turn a profit, it seems there is enough interest to make it quite lucrative.

Gordon Levy said they were starting work on Coyote straight pipes. I'm looking for that post now...

found it... click here (http://www.ffcars.com/forums/17-factory-five-roadsters/294585-ast-borden-header-flanges.html#post2692879)

There is quite a bit of discussion about it. The $3,000 price tag seems really steep. By his estimations that puts labor around $125/hr for welding.

I'm in the same boat... guess the budget just went up a little more.

Wow, this is incredible. My impression of Factory Five just went down significantly. Funny how none of this was mentioned as I was writing checks to order the kit and all the other parts that I purchased along with it. I guess it will depend now how Mr. Smith decides to deal with customers who are in the same situation as I am...

My 2 cents

My experience with FFR has been first rate and I understand they have many R&D projects under way. FFR provided a short term solution that allowed me to get the car completed while their R&D continues.

I ordered a set of 5.0 staineless J-pipes (early 90's vintage) from FFR and had them modified to fit. These fit very well and allow for additional adgustment/alignment of the side pipes during final fitting due to the ball flange between the headers and straight pipe (I do not think the 4.6 straight pipe headers have a ball flange - so very limited adjustment of side pipes possible if using the 4.6 (4 into 1) straight pipes).

Cost ~ $350 to modify the J-pipe - I thought this was quite pricy but much compound cutting - welding - refitting and adjustment required for proper fittment of straight pipes.

The benefit of this option is that the straight pipes can be further modified to accept cats (if required) although the PS pipe length is limited so a special "short" cat will be required.

I will run as is to complete the car possibly convert to Cats at some lated date.

Although this takes a little more effort - I am very happy with this set-up - looks great (very clean), allows for proper installation of the O2 sensors and sounds nice (deep rumble) and I can install Cats if I decide to do so.

Jester,

Dave Smith stated to quite a few people that FFR was only going to support cats for this motor. Heck, I think he even said it on PowerBlock. Then, back in January he said they were a few weeks away from having the exhaust solution complete. And now, it's August and they still don't have a complete solution and they have no plans to offer cats. From the conversation I've had with them, the j-pipe will be square/rectangular. Not easy to modify for a cat since aftermarket cats are round. If they weren't going to support cats, they should have taken their 4.6L SOHC headers from BBK and adapted a Coyote flange. Not that hard since the 5.0L and 4.6L motors have the same exterior block dimensions. Instead, they develop a header that dumps right on the frame rail and hit the drivers side footbox. It's a half-assed solution since it appears they wanted to use the same header for the 33 and roadster. The Coyote exhaust is turning in to another Mendeola debacle. FFR does a lot right, but they really dropped the ball on the Coyote exhaust, IMHO.

Hi Kevin,

My experience has been very positive. I did not have any issues with the FFR BBK headers hitting the footbox however I decided to modify the DS footbox to provide an additional 1" of clearance for the DS head of the Coyote. Note: I also used 3/8" alumimun spacers ontop of the frame engine mounts to help with any space issues and raise the oil pan (after replaceing stock pan)

The solution of modifing the 5.0 J-pipes has worked well for me however I need to look into special order short cats (6") for the straight pipes.

Overall I am happy with the support and results. Given the relative timing re the release of the Coyote - FFR has done a fine job suppoting builders who opt to take on this challenge.

My wish list though would be a cat solution provided by FFR for the BBK headers.

+1 on this. My support has been great. I'm not in a hurry for the drivetrain components, so timing is not a concern. My goal is to complete as much as i can and then acquire the engine/trans and exhaust parts later. I do wish that they would tackle the issue with the Cats, though.

The straight pipes have taken too long. We wanted to have them made out of stainless but the manufacturer has not been able to match the original samples. I just test fit another Hot Rod set today and found one side was correct but the other was not so I have corrected it. The Roadster ones are next to test fit.

We decided to do the Straight pipes first as most people do not need cats. If there is interest/demand we can do the cats fairly easily once the straight pipes are completed.

Please feel free to e-mail me with questions etc..

All, having terrific experience with "Stainless Headers" on building headers for the MK4 and the Coyote. The guys at the company are great, and the products they build look wonderful. I'll post more as we get these completed, but as of now, I'd suggest that you hold on a couple of weeks as I should have some pictures and more information shortly.

Are you doing long tubes with Stainless Headers? If so, I am very interested to hear how things work out. Maybe 4-5 months out for me when I will need them.

Kevin
