I'm trying to stay focused on my build, but I recently acquired a '72 Camaro. My plan is to turn it into a track-day car along the "pro-touring" line of thought. The one twist, though, is that instead of the common LS engine swap, I'd like to install a Coyote engine with a six-speed and a Ford nine-inch rear. The plans aren't firm yet, but they include a very sparce interior (but with a pair of one-piece shell seats, no back seat, and a good amount of carbon fiber, leather, and suede), large brakes all around, 17" or 18" Panasport/minilite-style wheels with sticky rubber, and a modern driveline. The body will remain as close to original as possible, with the exception of the "powered by Ford" emblems that will be on the fenders.

The first shot is of the car as it sits today and the second is what I'm hoping it will look like when done (the second is the '70 that Detroit Speed uses as a test mule).

I'm open to suggestions, so fire away!!!

That would be cool. A Ford powered Chevy Pro-touring. I like.

Let me know when you get that done! I want to see you take it to a car show and hear all the comments you get about having a Ford motor in a Chevy. That would be great payback for all the SBC's in all the Ford hot-rods through the years.

A Blue Oval engine in a Bowtie car. I love it!

Are you going to keep the vinyl roof?

You're really a glutton for punishment...all the abuse you'll take when people see the Ford engine in there.

You'll want to upgrade the front suspension. When I had my first gen, Marc at scandc.com was a big help. Look him up and see if he sells second gen stuff (I think he does). He wrote a book called "how to make your muscle car handle"
http://www.amazon.com/Make-Your-Muscle-Handle-Performance/dp/1934709077/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1297722973&sr=8-1
There's a before & after shot of my car on the track..huge difference in handling with his help.

I was watching a show yesterday and they were installing a rack & pinion conversion kit from UniSteer in a 70 Chevelle...see if something like that is available for your car.

Wonder if you can ditch the bumper or convert it to a split bumper? The split bumper look is so much better on those early second gens.

There used to be a shop in Florida called Prodigy Customs that had a nice 4 link setup for first & second gen cars. That would really help with the handling.

I'm sure you know about Pro-Touring.com....great site for support with this type of build.
