Alex,

I used a clay bar for the first time this past weekend on my wife's daily driver and was amazed at how smooth the finish came out. My question is will a clay bar do anygood against water spots on a black finish?

My pickup truck is black with terrible water spots, but right now the truck is covered with road sand and salt so I need to get a day when it is not sub zero weather to clean it and give it a try.

If a clay bar won't touch water spots, what do you think will get rid of them, short of wet sanding the clearcoat?

I'm not Alex but I'll give it a shot.

It really depends on the water spots. Are they on the surface of the paint or etched in? If they're above the surface you can try either clay or white vinegar to remove them. A good multi-step compound/buff/polish might help after the cleaning.

If they're etched into the paint, the only way to remove them is to wet/color sand and then polish.

And, for goodness sake, keep a GOOD coat of wax on that black truck all the time!

If it's just a light water spot you should be able to wipe with a quick detailer and microfiber cloth, or vinegar/distilled water 50/50 mix.

If it's already etched you'll need to polish it out. If it's etched very lightly an all-in-one polish like optima poli-seal woudl do the trick; otherwise you're going to have to go more aggressive. Obviously wetsanding it out would be the last step, if something like an orange pad + menzerna SIP failed to remove it.

CoryB, efnfast,

Thanks for the info, as soon as I can get all the road sand and salt cleaned off I'll give your suggestions a try.
