In trying to keep my engine (408W) looking as “original” as possible, have been trying to mount my alternator (passenger side) using a set of stock, plain steel brackets (a J-arm and triangle shaped mount) I purchased from CJ Pony Parts and is for a 70-73 Mustang with a 351W engine. Recently found out that Ford used an adapter bracket/mount that fastens to the head to relocate the mounting point for the long alternator bolt to match that on the 302 engines (Ford used the same accessories on the 351W as on the 302 but the 351W is wider). Also found out that in most cases, it is cheaper and easier to buy a set of single groove, aluminum pulleys (got mine from CVF Racing) and have them powdercoated satin black than try to find a good set of original steel single groove pulleys. Also discovered if your engine had an aftermarket damper, you will need a spacer just the right thickness to get the crank pulley to align with the water pump pulley.

Has anyone else used this setup successfully on their engine and if so, could you post a few pictures. Mostly interested in how you spaced the triangle-shaped bracket and J-arm to get the alternator pulley to line up with the water pump and crank pulley.

As always, thanks for your help.
