I'd like to get some ideas for tire sizes that people are happy with. I was planning for 17 inch rims, but would be willing to change that.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'd say that by a wide margin the most popular 17" sizes for a Mk4 are 255/40-17 or 245/45-17 in the front and as long as you use a Fox width setup, 315/35-17 for the rear.
Good luck with your build!

I think that 275 fronts are more normal. I am in the DC area full of autocrossers and we all run 275s. Some people seem to be real worried that 275s will hit the "F" panels at full lock. Yep, they will. They make a bit of a black mark on a flat surface so there is no damage to either so... what's the problem? But the other big FFR problem that 275s help make better is the FFR tendency to have too much front brake. Mustang brakes moved from a front weight biased car to a rear weight biased car cause that. One help is to run the largest size front tires possible. I wouldn't even consider anything other than a 275. BTW, one of the autocrossers is running 295 fronts for about a year now.

I have 245/45 in front and 315/35 in back. Front rims are 17 x 9 (6" backspace) and the rear are 17 x 11 (8 3/4" backspace). I have front spindles and rear axle from a 2001 GT. My kit is a Mk 3.1. I get a little bit of tire rub at full steering lock.
There are photos on my website (there's a link in my signature).

I'm running 255/40/ZR17 up front and 315/35/ZR17 in the rear.

I have been running 245X45 R17 BFG G-Force Sports, front and rear, and have been completely satisfied.
I'm running 245/50R/16's all the way around.

Old school here. 235X60X15 front 275X50X15 rear. Looks like it should and rides great.
